It affects them as their rate of pay & overall agreement is based on trust that the technology provides a secure path to the end-user's money.

If it didn't matter how it was done, Apple & Android Pay would be absolutely everywhere by now.
If that is the case then they won't remove touch ID

How will this work when paying via contactless?

I'm especially thinking of buses and on the London tube. Neither of those have the phone in my line of vision.

If true - stupid idea and I'll skip this generation until they see sense and put it back.

Apparently, according to the article the laser sensor will work if the iPhone is on a desk, so I guess it will work on trains and buses.

So its not like doing a selfie, we wont need to peer into the lens.

It would be a different story vs ditching of discs, USB, headphone, etc.

In all those cases, once the rest of the market catches up with Apple's vision of the world the "new" solutions are better than the old ones (just think at USB c).

In this case, unless Apple' facial recognition tech is beyond what we can reasonably imagine, the "new" solution would be worse in many, many, many user cases, regardless of the maturity or market adoption of the new tech (I.e. Just a few banal examples: Phone unusable for motorbike riders, unusable during Halloween, unusable for Muslim women, etc). Once everyone uses USB C, there won't be a single user case where old USB is better than USB c. Same for wireless headphones, etc.
Facial recognizition might very well be paired with Touch ID and may very well work better than Touch ID in many user cases, but removing Touch ID entirely would simply render the phone unusable in way too many use cases.

Seriously, just think at people at an Halloween party having to remove their masks if they want to send a message...

You need something like "brain waves ID" to ditch Touch ID. A real improvement would be to have Touch ID sensors all over the phone...

Yeah it has to be like this otherwise it won't replace touch ID..if the long term plan is to have this as the main thing for unlocking your device it needs to be perfect

I hope touch ID will remain in the iPhone because otherwise I would need to use the pin again to follow a strict no photo rule @work ...

It's easy to assume that by removing the Touch ID sensor they will be able to cut build cost of the phone. Little cost reductions like this and removal of the headphone jack could net millions and millions of dollars on an iPhone 8. They know people will buy it anyway so maximizing profit is smart for the corporation.

Seems like every year around this time we get rumors about features not making it to the phone, seems like apple is trying to muddy the waters so we don't know what to expect

Agreed. I've said this before the apple marketing team is Gold Standard especially during Keynote and the buildup before.

Without sounding too cynical these 'analysts' are probably in apples Marketing Teams pockets.

I would have thought First rule of marketing is "you want what you can't have"......

"Hit them with touchID WONT be on the next iPhone"

You can set your diary by it.

There is a lot of psychology going on here.

I'm good with a 7 if this is the case. Imagine authenticating Apple Pay transactions? How awkward! Lol.

Perfect way to combat any real leaks. Send out 10 more each similar but equally false.

What if I'm walking along the road and a petty thief grabs my (locked) phone out of my hand and sticks it in my face and runs off?

Simple. The thief won't be able to access anything secure. Because they don't have the owner's face.

On top of that the phone can continually check the face of the user. If it's not the owner, it'll lock out him/her out.

Hypothetically this is more secure than TouchID.

WTF!! Show of hands of how many may look at their phone in the middle of the night, IN A DARK BEDROOM!!!! Or in a movie theater (before the movie starts, of course) IN A DARK THEATER!! Some days in the year I may let my beard grow, whereas other time I’m cleaned shaved. Again, WTF!!

The process is still the same, Apple Pay wouldn't change how you attach your card to the device it's just how Apple Pay would be authenticated, at the moment it's Touch ID but that could change to 3D facial recognition.
Removing TouchID I don't think would be a problem as far as banks are concerned.

Samsung Pay if I remember correctly from looking at my son's S8+ the other day allows, Pin, FingerPrint and Iris scan.
I can't see it being a problem with Apple using Pin or FaceScan for ApplePay.

It's pretty late in the ballgame for Apple so they're either going with Plan A or Plan B for their phone if the FP under the screen isn't ready. Material and tooling have to be sourced and ready to go so there is a time table and they're not going to push it back a couple of months because they're more than likely already started planning and forecasting for next years phone. I'm still not convinced TouchID won't be on the back or side.

I can see Apple pushing Apple Watch to use with Apple Pay or some new Apple iBracelet for those that don't want to use FaceScan for ApplePay

Yea I agree, Apple plan ahead they have to I'd bet they have a road map that's years ahead. Touch ID is probably being planned to be removed at some point and maybe Apple are bringing it forward because they can't put Touch ID under the display, or maybe this is exactly as they have planned it all along only Apple know that.

Something else that hasn't been mentioned is that if some people still want Touch ID they will be able to buy the 7S and 7S Plus, rumours are pointing to them releasing those alongside the all new designed iPhone 8 (or whatever they call it)

- The face sensor would work in the dark.
- The face sensor would work in any cinema.
- The AI would disregard facial hair changes.

Simple. And better than TouchID. In theory of course.

Or they leak stuff on purpose to test the waters so to speak.

Yes that article is correct, there are still issues with putting the sensor behind the screen or both Samsung and Apple would have gone that route. For the time being Samsung placed it on the back just like numerous other Android phones like the Pixel. Im telling you the there is a very real chance it will be on the back of the iPhone aswell, if not Apple will move completely to Facial recognition.

Rumor is that the Note 8 FP will also be on the back when many thought it was going to be under the screen.
So either Samsung is still having issues with the FP under the screen or they just decided to save it for the S9 series.
The FP on the back won't bother me as long as it's located in the place like the Pixel.

I used my sons S8+ and the FP works but it's not in the ideal location IMO especially if you're left handed, the Pixel location is more inline for either hand use. The FP on the back is a trade off of more screen and less bezel vs being able to unlock the phone face up on a desk, table etc. I tend to place my phone facedown so the FP on the back isn't a killer for me. Things change, you can either change with them or stay the say and whine about it as others move forward.

But what if the petty thief having pinched my iPhone he pressed say mSecure Password Manager and realised it needed FaceID and so he ran back and pushed the iPhone in my face and ran off, laughing.

I'd be a bit upset.

Relying on facial recognition would render it useless to a lot of people of religions that require facial covering.
Not very good for a brand that prides itself in equality and diversity.

I agree, if it was 6 months ago, but I think its safe to say the iPhone 10th anniversary ready for a Sept launch in The Steve Jobs Theatre - is being produced as I type.

With a 250M target.
