Honest question: aren't facial features much easier to replicate than fingerprints?

I mean, if I steal Bill Gates phone and I rush to Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum would i gain access to his bank accounts by taking a selfie with his statue ?

Do you really think that Bill Gates will have an iPhone? Really?

It would be pretty funny if there was no iphone 8 and all we got was a 7s...like that year where they were rumouring the teardrop iphone and we got the 4S instead (or maybe it was the 5S). I think that Apple if they are doing a 50/50 iphone 8 iphone 7 production is far missing the boat. People don't want the same design for a 4th year in a row

As a motorcyclist, facial recognition would be a pain in the ass. Often I'll stop briefly to check maps or messages, or to pay for Gas at the pump. With facial recognition I have to remove my helmet and sunglasses every time. God I hope not.

What I wish was possible would be to unlock the phone with just your voice. So many times my hands are busy / dirty and I want an answer from Siri for something. "I'm sorry, you need to unlock your iPhone first". Grr... "Hey Siri, unlock this!"

That's what I was thinking. If the launch is to indeed be in September, these phones would already be in production.

Perhaps the launch is in September, but the iPhone 8 will be available in December?

HomePod and iMac Pro are very recent examples of Apple launching (or announcing) a new product months before it is actually in shops or available.

Apple Stock has had a really hard reaction to ...something. These analysts' news?

EDIT: A lot of tweets claim that NASDAQ stock prices are showing erratic errors.

they may move the fingerprint reader but will not remove for facial recognition the current system works way to well for them to replace it scanning your face then tapping would take longer and may not work 100% of the time

How many people are actually going to follow up on the no Touch ID no buy mindset they have now? Apple could easily win people over by releasing an otherwise stellar iPhone 8.

1. ME

I skipped the 7+ hoping to be impressed with the 8 or iPhone X as I would like to call it. If this happens, well then 7+ it is...

If this is true, I am not buying this phone and will have to wait until the "S" version. Because I assume that is when Apple will then include Touch ID.

so I have to turn on the lights to unlock my phone? touch id is fast and it works... why even think about removing it?

I can't count the number of times a day I unlock my iPhone to check or read something while it is sitting on a conference table staring at the ceiling. If facial recognition is the only way to unlock your phone I'll be pissed (entering a passcode for no-look unlocks on a table would be unsecure).

I have to wonder how the lack of fingerprint scanner will affect touchless payment via Apple Pay?

Following a report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggesting the next-generation "iPhone 8" will do away with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor entirely, Bloomberg says Apple is working on an "improved" security system that will let customers unlock their iPhones and make Apple Pay payments with facial recognition technology.

Apple's new facial recognition engine is powered by a 3D sensor rumored to be built into the front-facing camera, and according to Bloomberg's sources, Apple is also said to be testing eye scanning to "augment the system." Using facial recognition, the iPhone can be unlocked within a few hundred milliseconds and it allegedly works even when the device is lying on a table. It's said to capture more data points than a fingerprint scan, making it more secure than Touch ID.

Samsung built a similar feature, iris scanning, into its Galaxy S8, which has not proven to be foolproof. Hackers have successfully bypassed the feature using a printed photo with a contact lens on top of it, and in a video, a launch version of the S8 was shown being fooled by a photograph alone.

Apple's solution is said to be more secure because it is using 3D depth perception, preventing it from being bypassed by 2D pictures.

Bloomberg warns that the feature is "still being tested" and that Apple could have decided to nix it, so it continues to be unclear if the iPhone 8 will indeed do away with Touch ID entirely in favor of facial recognition.

Rumors surrounding Touch ID in the iPhone 8 have been all over the place during the course of the last few months. Apple was rumored to be having difficulty embedding the Touch ID fingerprint sensor under the display of the device and explored other solutions including a rear Touch ID button, but the company's final solution remains up in the air. What we do know is that the most recent dummy models and part leaks show a display without a Touch ID button, suggesting it's either under the display or non-existent.

Today's report also includes a quick mention that Apple is testing faster displays with ProMotion technology for the iPhone 8. ProMotion display technology, which features a 120Hz refresh rate for improvements to motion and animations, was first introduced in 2017 iPad Pro models.
