There is no way that this rumor is true. Apple would never leave out the fingerprint scanner because they need it for Apple Pay. This rumor stems from the leaked dummy phones that have leaked showing no sign of a fingerprint scanner. Either Apple has beaten the rest of the industry to an under screen fingerprint reader or they left it out. This article is hedging bets just in case it's the latter.

This should be interesting..
All those who laughed at Samsung and the S8 - with no finger recognition in the front.
And boo-hooed the lack of security with the camera unlock.
I guess when Apple does it, it's going to be the best thing ever.
Just a prediction.

Given Apple's track record in recent years, is it really?

Apple's made a couple of questionable decisions in recent years, but no more than in the past. For every Mac Pro, there was a G4 cube. That said, they were perfectly good machines for their time.

My main point was that Apple has a great track record of thinking things through unlike most companies. They're not going to eliminate Touch ID with a facial recognition system that can be bypassed with a photo like Samsung's implementation, for example. They'll make sure paying with Apple Pay at retail will be just as easy if not easier because they've been using it themselves for years. And paying with Apple Pay online? No need to move your thumb to a specific location... it'll just work. At least, that's my expectation if these rumors are true.

Good to know the 2017 MBPs are already obsolete with their outdated dinosaur TouchID.

Slight exaggeration, but if this ends up being true, it's just another way the MBP finally catches up to the phone and then falls behind once again.

TSA's best friend. It'd better be an option in addition to Touch ID instead of a replacement.

I sincerely doubt touchID is being replaced. It’s the standard for Apple Pay, and facial recognition is not a more elegant solution. I’m not sure facial recognition makes much sense at all with a handset.

Honest question: aren't facial features much easier to replicate than fingerprints?

I mean, if I steal Bill Gates phone and I rush to Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum would i gain access to his bank accounts by taking a selfie with his statue ?

Too difficult. Much easier to lift a copy of his finger print from a glass he's used and use touch id.
Touch ID was proven to be by-passable not long after it launched.

So...if the police have your phone and want to unlock it they just point it at your face now?

Cool. It means they need to leave your face alone, at least until they've got your phone open.

I have never heard of the Touch ID being manipulated - I think it would be much more secure than facial/iris recognition.

It has. Back when it first launched.

Will Bill Gates buy an iPhone?

This is hopefully too stupid to be true.
Among other things, it would make the iPhone unusable for a few millions of Muslim women.

It's said to capture more data points than a fingerprint scan, making it more secure than Touch ID.

I'll believe that when I see it - this is my main concern about replacing TouchID with facial recognition.

I wonder if this Bloomberg source is just Apple trying to respond to the Ming-Chi report regarding lack of touch ID and spin it positively (face ID is more secure..blah blah).

It would certainly make sense for Apple to get in on this early now and set the scene before launch - even if it wasn't them on this occasion.

I can already see the Apple launch ads of one person after another smiling at their phones whilst unlocking them with facial recognition that's "beautifully advanced, fantastically secure and yet so simple to use".

Man... Touch ID is so useful to me.

Work aside when I'm cycling using my Quad Lock and I need to unlock my phone I just tap it.

Am I going to have to lean over the top of my phone to open it?

If so an iPhone 7 is my next upgrade...

"and it allegedly works even when the device is lying on a table."

I'm starting to warm to face recognition.
I guess this is the Primesense technology with some form of infra red for night time unlock and 3D to pick up on a criminal holding a picture.
To unlock on a table, bike, car the ir laser must be at least 90 degree coverage.

This will be far better than the slightly hit and miss touch-id.

Nice one apple.

Following a report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggesting the next-generation "iPhone 8" will do away with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor entirely, Bloomberg says Apple is working on an "improved" security system that will let customers unlock their iPhones and make Apple Pay payments with facial recognition technology.

Apple's new facial recognition engine is powered by a 3D sensor rumored to be built into the front-facing camera, and according to Bloomberg's sources, Apple is also said to be testing eye scanning to "augment the system." Using facial recognition, the iPhone can be unlocked within a few hundred milliseconds and it allegedly works even when the device is lying on a table. It's said to capture more data points than a fingerprint scan, making it more secure than Touch ID.

Samsung built a similar feature, iris scanning, into its Galaxy S8, which has not proven to be foolproof. Hackers have successfully bypassed the feature using a printed photo with a contact lens on top of it, and in a video, a launch version of the S8 was shown being fooled by a photograph alone.

Apple's solution is said to be more secure because it is using 3D depth perception, preventing it from being bypassed by 2D pictures.

Bloomberg warns that the feature is "still being tested" and that Apple could have decided to nix it, so it continues to be unclear if the iPhone 8 will indeed do away with Touch ID entirely in favor of facial recognition.

Rumors surrounding Touch ID in the iPhone 8 have been all over the place during the course of the last few months. Apple was rumored to be having difficulty embedding the Touch ID fingerprint sensor under the display of the device and explored other solutions including a rear Touch ID button, but the company's final solution remains up in the air. What we do know is that the most recent dummy models and part leaks show a display without a Touch ID button, suggesting it's either under the display or non-existent.

Today's report also includes a quick mention that Apple is testing faster displays with ProMotion technology for the iPhone 8. ProMotion display technology, which features a 120Hz refresh rate for improvements to motion and animations, was first introduced in 2017 iPad Pro models.

I will have to take a hard pass if it doesn't have TouchID. Most of the time Apple Pay is ready before I even finish pulling the phone out of my pocket. What's the point in wasting all of that time to look like an idiot trying to take a selfie and holding up the line instead of paying?

I think the enlarged power button is where Touch ID will be located. The Sony Xperia has this feature and it seems to work well.

Touchid is one thing that is superior to android phones. Removing it will make the iPhone just another phone among the android masses. I will not buy an iPhone without touchid

Probably will have "to unlock....it would be business as usual: we continue to use fingerprints to unlock our iPhones, it’s just that Apple switches to a different method of reading them." to avoid this privacy flaw.

So its a hybrid of a more reliable but less secure touch-id and 100% secure face recognition.

This won't happen

Do you know how hard Apple has been working to secure deals with all these banks and credit unions based on the fingerprint implementation? They wouldn't sacrifice the deals given how far they've progressed / how much of a gamble they took on TouchID.

It's not happening, at least not in this iPhone. If I'm wrong I'd be incredibly shocked.
