Couldn't care less about Find My. Just build a remote that isn't completely stupid this time.

I would like a dedicated “change user“ button - there’s too much swiping and too much overloaded functionality in different buttons. If everything could be done by button (instead of needing swipes) it would also mean that any IR remote could be used, even for that “advanced functionality,” instead.

I could be wrong but I believe my stock tv remote can pull up that function. I’m not 100% sure though since I just use the remote on my phone.
The A12X is a great chip, but it's two years old... If Apple is really wanting to make a push into gaming (and I think they should), I hope they put the A14X in there. An A14X with the cooling fan that's already in the AppleTV would be great for gaming! It would surely help devs take the AppleTV more seriously.

Also, there are a ton of indicators that Apple is trying to make the Mac a better gaming platform. So if they beef up the AppleTV for gaming, they'll be able to present the full gaming experience: On the go? iPhone/iPad. At home on your Mac? Have at it. Wanna play with family? The AppleTV plays all the same games. Oh, and it's all cloud synced so you can pick up and play wherever you left off, on ANY of your devices. To me, that would be a pretty killer system.

Thats a good point. It would be cool to see the partner with a company such as Valve/Steam and release a powerful system with a large initial library. As it stands, I don’t view the ATV as a gaming system. I’m still stuck in an old mentality. Stand alone gaming system (PlayStation) and separate device for media (AppleTV).

Maybe a full push to gaming might change that but as of now, its a great media device

That's only for the refreshed design which came out with the 4K version.
The Apple TV HD didn't have that feature.

1. When comparing next gen tech we typically compare it to the current generation device not older devices.

2. Apple TV HD has the same button layout as the Apple TV 4K. Did you mean the Apple TV 4, which was the same box as the HD but with an identical remote to the 4K minus the white menu ring?

One of the Apple remotes biggest strengths is that in so few buttons you never have to physically look at it. The menu button as a ridge, the volume toggle is long, and Siri has a bevel. This means any button you touch can either be identified immediately or in the case of tv or pause move your finger towards midline.

Put a silicon sleeve on it. The remote will be easier to find and use.

I've used a black one of these since my previous remote broke after falling off the sofa. I've got a black cover which is smart and you know if you're holding it the wrong way without needing to look.

I hope the new version has stronger glass and MORE BUTTONS too.

No regular remote is going to be as good as an playstation or xbox controller for gaming.

Out of the 4 remotes I have, I prefer the Apple TV one. I don't understand the criticism.
I read all the disadvantages people list, but I don't experience them.
I like it and I hope they don't change it too much.

I completely agree. Although I inevitably pause my show when picking it up sometimes, it's by far the best remote experience I have. The times I have to use a Roku remote or similar, I am frustrated it's not as easy and nice as the Apple remote.

If you aks me the Apple Remote (the aluminium one) was the best remote ever made. I love that thing. I've bought spares in case they ever stop making it!

Apple TV Remote is to be put with the old round mouse: bad design. It looks good but cannot be used without looking at it.

The best remote I ever had was the Beolink 1000. Simple, heavy enough to feel well in the hand, narrow enough to control with the thumb.

I hope they release a lower priced model for those not interested in gaming. Something under $100 to compete with Roku and Fire TV.

So weird to read on a technology site about a bunch of people who seem to constantly lose their remote, then don’t understand how to use it once it’s found. 😂🤣

I absolutely love the touchpad! I wouldn't be opposed to something that has a D-pad AND the touchpad, though. When it comes to seeking within a video, nothing beats the touchpad.

The current remote is *horrific* and the requirement for all apps to be compatible with it seriously limits potential for game development.
But... they don’t require it. There are plenty of games that say “controller required”

Apple Remote easily the worst invention Apple has ever made. The entire problem is that it is never usable without looking at it. You need to look at it to know which way is up to use the touchpad. Meanwhile, every other remote in the world is usable without looking at it.

Holy crap did Apple completely fail at user experience design here.
I see your terrible remote and raise you these monstrosities:

Just curious why so many people want a mute button? It is not OTA TV with no ability to pause. Not trying to be a jerk, I’m legitimately curious.
I have it with HDMI-cec to my tv and I want to have the ability to mute my tv with it.. like I have with my Fire TV, no biggie though, but its a nice functionality to have.
I watch a lot of streaming sports that I wont pause or some apps can't even pause them and I have streaming live channels thru various network/cable apps as well.

And BTW, I work it much faster than comparable devices and remotes on Amazon Fire TV and the Shield TV (that I have both) with a "traditional" streaming player remote. Theres not so many different ways to do it.. in that case you need to go back to an "analogue" trackpad. Its just 5 or 6 buttons plus either D-pad or a touchpad, no way other to do it really on an external streaming device at least.

Of course, by the time you’ve groped around the remote to get your bearings on the white ring, you’ve managed to inadvertantly click the touch pad part three or four times, and now you’re watching “tiny restaurants in the aardvarks” on HGTV for some reason, and you don’t even subscribe to that.

Guess I don't ever have that issue. But I also don't lose my remote and need a finder as it seems others do. But it seems I don't treat my technology like trash as most do, which is why I've never used an iPhone case since 2007 and never had an issue.

That’s it? A stupid fix for their failed remote design? And a faster processor?

I don’t understand why they don’t just pull the plug on this device. There’s nothing the ATV offers that’s unique at that ridiculous price point.

Maybe if they released their grant vision for the future of TV (because the current TV app definitely isn’t it),make it into a real gaming console, add a camera and sensors, make it smart by detecting who is in the room, offer a dashboard to start the day, and so on.

Apple TV’s remote is why I own Rokus - THREE of them. Fix the remote and I’ll be back.

Since your starting to see HDMI 2.1 AVR’s (8k) coupled with iPad Pro GPU improvements, it’s possible that the next ATV will be more useful both with YouTube at 4K and 8k. There is a number of 8k cameras appearing on the market now. It might be early, but the ATV4K was launched when it was actually cutting edge technology as supporting both HDR10, Dolby Vision. The gaming side was weak but a new more powerful ARM could make it lot more useful, with a optional game controller. Three years is a long time between models. :)
