Apple Remote easily the worst invention Apple has ever made. The entire problem is that it is never usable without looking at it. You need to look at it to know which way is up to use the touchpad. Meanwhile, every other remote in the world is usable without looking at it.

Holy crap did Apple completely fail at user experience design here..
I think the round mouse, that gave no indication of any sort of correct orientation, would give it a run for worst ever

The re-designed remote is what most interests me. Our ATV 4k and HD models work completely fine for what we use them for. But a re-designed remote would be welcome.

Put a silicon sleeve on it. The remote will be easier to find and use.

I have a sleeve as well, and it does make a big difference. Otherwise, feel for the ring around the Menu button. With these, I have little problem determining the correct orientation. The sleeves I have don't have lanyards, that might be a great addition as well!

How relevant is "Apple TV" in this time of digital content?

It might be a king of old times. but this device will die soon, now that TV's are equipped with Android with numerous apps.
The processors in TV's are lame compared to the A-series in the Apple TV. Manufacturers can't put power into a $300 TV. Plus, the app store they use is hit-or-miss (or defunct and dead). I've got ATV4K's on all my TV's and they just work.

1. When comparing next gen tech we typically compare it to the current generation device not older devices.

2. Apple TV HD has the same button layout as the Apple TV 4K. Did you mean the Apple TV 4, which was the same box as the HD but with an identical remote to the 4K minus the white menu ring?

One of the Apple remotes biggest strengths is that in so few buttons you never have to physically look at it. The menu button as a ridge, the volume toggle is long, and Siri has a bevel. This means any button you touch can either be identified immediately or in the case of tv or pause move your finger towards midline.

For point 2, yes my apologies. I miss read and interrupted the “ring” as being the higher/elevated “longer” buttons.

The ring was added to assist people in figuring out what way the remote was orientated by touch.

For point 1,
It would be a fail to compare only the 4K Apple TV remote. Apple still sell version 4 with the older remote (lacking the ring). So it’s not really a decommissioned product.

I love the remote as is. Everyone in my home can use it easily. We don't lose it. I guess I never understood the issues. There's nothing better for scrubbing through video.

Guess I don't ever have that issue. But I also don't lose my remote and need a finder as it seems others do. But it seems I don't treat my technology like trash as most do, which is why I've never used an iPhone case since 2007 and never had an issue.

A slippery aluminum bar has its sights set on the abyss in the sealed bottom of a couch. Doesn't mean all people treat theirs like trash. Also many people don’t live alone. More interaction from more people is more likely to lose random objects like remotes.

Can someone tell me a reason to buy Apple TV instead of 250$ Smart TV for instance? I am really curious.

Updates. Speed. Most smart TV's suck unless you go very high end but even then I'd rather use a device. The software tends to be slow and the apps are only updated for so long. An ATV will be updated for many years and it's much faster. Using devices are better for sending audio to your receiver for home theater applications. ARC can be buggy and eARC is just recently coming out and not available on all tvs.
Going with a smart tv locks you in to their software with the apps they have available.
With a device you can really choose which one best meets your wants/needs.
The only smart TV software that I've ever liked has been on my LG OLED. But I still use my devices over that as it doesn't do eARC and I need lossless audio to my receiver.

And since no device or smart TV is perfect, I have multiple streaming devices to cover all my needs.

in my opinion the new Apple TV just needs to be a stick. Like a Roku or the fire stick. I can’t see any reason for the whole stand alone box idea. .

Not specifically apples fault but another thing i would like. Many people use their ATv as a streaming device now for live tv services such as YouTube tv, ATT tv etc.

It’d be nice if you could use those apps and say “change channel to ESPN” and have those change. As of now the Apple TV will open the ESPN app no problem, but within individual apps Siri integration is hit or miss. Again not specifically apples “fault” but would be nice to have
I've had my cable box hooked up to an Xbox One since 2013 for this exact reason. Being able to say "Xbox volume up" or "Xbox tune to NBC" while you're cooking or doing something else with your hands and can't grab the remote is invaluable.

Since Microsoft neutered the "OneGuide" and took away the ability to peruse the channel guide using voice controls a couple years ago, I've been bitter with them for actively removing functionality with a mandatory software update and have been looking for an alternative that would support this need ever since. Especially now that the Kinect component that has the microphone in it randomly shuts down, and constantly needs rebooted almost every day to fix it since they released one of those bad updates a few years ago.

If Apple would just add a built-in mic to the Apple TV (not in the remote) or pass those commands through a HomePod, that functionality could exist with ATV. I know it's as unlikely as ever, but nobody seems to make anything that compares to what the Xbox One's cable box support could do. I'm already deep into the Apple ecosystem nowadays, but if Apple were able to build this type of voice command TV control into their ecosystem I'd buy that hardware in a hot second.

They're generally more powerful and have Ethernet. And they're positioning the new one towards gaming.
Personally I'm not a fan of the sticks.

Just curious why so many people want a mute button? It is not OTA TV with no ability to pause. Not trying to be a jerk, I’m legitimately curious.
This is the only complaint I have about the ATV remote, and it is specifically because of OTA TV that can't be paused. I often let the TV play in the background while I'm working, and I need to mute when I take calls. Being able to do that without keeping a second remote on hand is annoying as all get out.

I’ll answer as well. I spent $2000 on a 75” Samsung smart TV. The apps are buggy at best and not near as many options as an Apple TV. The picture quality in 4k from the TV app vs Apple TV is disgraceful. Also I can’t uninstall a large number of apps and it only has 2GB. The force installed apps take up 1.75 GB. They push advertisements into the menu bar. I bought it for the screen and screen alone. It is not worthy to connect to my internet.

The Apple TV on the other hand works flawless, has an app for everything I could need and the screensavers are nothing short of digital art.

I don’t understand why the remote gets so much hate - I might be the only person who likes it. Yea, it’s a little small but it’s never taken me long to find one if an adult “lost” it (there was the one that a kid lost on me, my sister found it in the couch sitting on a structure rail a few months later). I did add cases to the remotes after that and it has helped the old people find it better.
Different people adopt tech differently-

I can AirPlay from my MacPro AppleTV contents to my Samsung QN49Q60RAF in 4K and the picture and audio is flawless. The TV now runs around 450$.

No Apple design beats this one for worst user experience:

I’ve worked with several 2018 and 2019 model Samsung TVs with AirPlay, and their implementation is very unreliable. Some apps like YouTube and Podcasts simply won’t play, or only play audio.

It’s so hit-or-miss that I always end up just going straight to AirPlaying through the Apple TV, unless I’m just screen sharing.
