I have a merry go round of apple tvs. I have a gen 3, a gen 4, and a 4k. This update would allow me to put this one in the living room and bump the other ones down. The guest room will finally have an apple tv

We lose the Roku remote all the time. Just lost it a couple days ago and found it yesterday. Remotes being lost is a normal thing. We even lose the Xfinity remote and that thing is bulky. 😂

I don’t mind the ATV remote. I believe it can be improved, but it works fine. I actually like the touch pad for scrolling and zipping around a screen of content. It’s a lot faster than repeated clicking of Up, Down, Left and Right to finally get there. I admit that sometimes the touch pad makes things more difficult. So it’s a trade off either way.

We wanted a new ATV this year and have held off. We’re ready when a new one launches. We have an HD.

I’m interested in an ATV that has Mac mini type capabilities. With Macs going to in-house SoC, it’s now very possible.

Can’t wait to see what upgraded graphics on the new atv are like ! A PS4 killer ?

😂 PS4 killer!? Even if Apple could get close to PS4 performance on an A series SoC, they don’t have the games to make it a “killer” of any consoles. iOS is decent for the games it offers, but it’s nowhere near what the “big 3” offer.

How relevant is "Apple TV" in this time of digital content?

It might be a king of old times. but this device will die soon, now that TV's are equipped with Android with numerous apps.

In my experience, those built in Smart TVs are outdated way too fast. If you’re upgrading TVs every other year maybe it’s a valid argument. I like having my TVs smarts separated from the actual TV panel. It gives me more control over my experience. I haven’t used my Smart TV features for years. I have multiple smart TVs.

Of course this is announced today. . . just received a refurb 4K yesterday; our old 2nd gen was just too glitchy. And yes, I knew a new one was coming. Spouse got tired of me waiting. . . . . . .
In fact, I was thinking this was a plausible strategy: they delay the release, so people in need for an Apple TV will buy two this year.

All I want for Christmas is the ability to pair a 2nd remote.

This may come as a surprise to Apple, but some houses actually have two couches set apart for a single TV. Shocking I know.

Apple Remote easily the worst invention Apple has ever made. The entire problem is that it is never usable without looking at it. You need to look at it to know which way is up to use the touchpad. Meanwhile, every other remote in the world is usable without looking at it.

Holy crap did Apple completely fail at user experience design here..

you could argue the touch sensitivity or that it gets lost often but if you actually use the atv regularly having to look at the remote isn’t a real complaint.
I can’t tell you the last time I’ve had to look at mine if I wasn’t actually just looking where it was to pick it up.
At the very least the touch surface should provide enough context for orientation.

Apple Remote easily the worst invention Apple has ever made.

Here I was thinking the Newton was bad ;). It's interesting how polarizing opinions on the remote are. With a silicon case you can get on Amazon for $7 bucks, it transforms the experience. It's easily my favorite remote out of ANY of my electronic devices

If this has a remote with buttons instead of a weird touchpad, it's an instant buy for me.
I learned how to use a touchpad when using a phone and trackpad. simply awesome remote. Never need to look for weirdly placed tiny buttons in the dark. Best invention ever. You do know you can always use your tv remote with the appleTV, right? so just use that and you get your cute little buttons

The current remote is *horrific* and the requirement for all apps to be compatible with it seriously limits potential for game development.
horrific as in horrifically awesome? I'd agree, best remote ever. easy to navigate, easy to find controls, no more searching for tiny little oddly placed buttons. Plus, it works the same as the remote app on the iPhone - Brilliant!

So I can use find my to see the remote exists somewhere within a 50 foot circle at my house, when I sometimes can’t find it behind the bed 2 feet away.

Do they think I lost it on the way to the grocery store? Maybe I left it at the bar last night? It’s not a phone I take with me. Is critical thinking no longer part of the job requirement for Apple engineers? How about INSTEAD you take that time wasted to redesign it completely so it actually works well for people?

Worst remote ever made. I used it 5 minutes. Thanks god i can use my TV remote instead. I really don’t understand how to use it. I tried a few times but the experience was horrible.
New things are hard, very confusing. It works just like the remote app on the iPhone - Brilliant, easy to use, elegant

In for one, maybe 2 if it’s really improved. Seems dumbfounded that Find My (Remote) was not included in the last revision. It always gets lost, so I often use my iPhone until found. I did put a tile sticker on it but then it was awkward to use, but solved it from slipping through the sofa cushions. Hopefully 2 Bluetooth headphones can be used. AirPlay doesn’t always work great either.

You can take it to the bank that the next version of Apple TV will come with HDMI 2.1, so a 2021 release makes sense.

As for the remote, I'd really like illuminated buttons. And also Touch ID. I can't for the life of me understand why it's never been implemented. Of all of Apple's products, Touch ID makes the most sense for the Apple TV Remote.

Given that a majority of the functionality of an Apple TV device is the software and the AppleTV+ app is working just fine on both my FAR less expensive Roku and Fire Stick devices, what is the incentive to buy or even care about what will undoubtedly be an overpriced Apple TV?

And yet, 98% of people disagree with you.

Um source?

You mean 98% of people that like to complain on Mac rumors. Agreed.

Disagree 100%. The apple remote is the ONLY remote I have that I even have a chance of not looking at. Every other remote has way too many buttons, in different patterns and sizes such that I always have to look at it to hunt and peck to do anything.

Not saying the apple remote is perfect. Sure I would like a mute button. Sure I sometimes get irritated at the trackpad. Yep it's different from every other remote which forces me to think different. But your particular criticism doesn't ring true for me.

Never got all the negativity about the remote. Yes, it's tiny and slippery, but I never have a problem with it, and have never lost it. Being an owner of a few fire tv's, and a roku owner for over a decade, the 4th and 5th gen Apple TVs, and more importantly, TVOS, is, IMHO, far and away the best platform, UI speaking, of them all. I even got a free stream tv box from FIOS which is android tv which is just plain awful, UI speaking. Always go to the Apple TV's first, as they work the best.

Sure, they can change the remote, or add an A12, but, to me, there isn't much that needs changing.

To me, the damage is done. Apple automatically activated my Apple TV+ one year subscription when I bought my MacBook Pro in November 2019. I never even logged in to it because I didn’t have a TV device that had Apple TV+ and I refused to pay big bucks for such an old, poor user experience Apple TV.

Meanwhile, the new Nvidia Shield caught my attention. It’s superior to the Apple TV in every way, unless you specifically want Apple Music on your TV for some reason. But it even supports AirPlay, so Apple Music isn’t really necessary, anyways.

Apple did the same thing with their HomePods and Apple Secure Video. I waited and waited and waited, needed a solution, couldn’t wait anymore, and ended up happy with another solution.

Fantastic. With Find My capability, I'll finally be able to find the worst remote ever made.
