I hope they make the connection between the remote and the ATV more solid. Right now, it loses connection from about ~10ft away... especially if the ATV is inside an AV cabinet or behind a TV...

How about adding an audio level gain feature? I constantly have to crank up my receiver while playing Apple TV in order to match sound levels of other inputs. When someone else in the family switches back to those other inputs its annoyingly loud.

They will lose a ton of buyers this holiday season if it’s not ready until 2021.

It’s a great family present. From games to movies right out of the box, it’s perfect to enjoy over the holidays, even more so this pandemic year.

You know, the remote is a interesting thing. I happen to really like it and miss the touchpad when I am using a standard remote. (though it could use some improvements) It’s particularly nice when scrubbing or scrolling IMHO.

My wife hates it enough that she uses a paired xbox controller to control the AppleTV.

here’s to hoping they figure out the magic balance we can all love.

I hear the best new feature of the new Apple TV is that you can use the “find my” feature to find which end of the goddamned remote is the top.

Apple Remote easily the worst invention Apple has ever made. The entire problem is that it is never usable without looking at it. You need to look at it to know which way is up to use the touchpad. Meanwhile, every other remote in the world is usable without looking at it.

Holy crap did Apple completely fail at user experience design here..

But Apple will never change it, because then they would be admitting as much. A less extreme example is when they moved the iPhone lock button opposite the volume up button.

How relevant is "Apple TV" in this time of digital content?

It might be a king of old times. but this device will die soon, now that TV's are equipped with Android with numerous apps.

Honestly what ever happened to Apple coming out with their own tv? Or for that matter why have they been unsuccessful in having some tv manufacturers put their os on their tv's?

I believe you are right as now tv's have overtaken streaming devices as the main avenue for streaming. Apple should pair with a manufacturer to come out with a line of Apple powered tv's. Integration into the set would be fantastic.

Put a silicon sleeve on it. The remote will be easier to find and use.

Did that with my living room Apple TV. Got a bright orange silicon case and it never gets lost or feels thin on hand.

Apple really needs to completely redo it's ATV remote... I'm at the point where I just use the iPhone app anymore, but even that is not much of an improvement. Total hardware fail.

I just wish Apple would allow 3rd party remotes other than Logitech to integrate. The fire tv voice remote has about every function (changing inputs is missing) and if it had siri instead of alexa it would make a great replacement remote for the current ATV remote for those that do not like it. Apple could resell it at a markup and I would buy it.

Apple TV supports *any* IR remote. I use one from URC, but I’ve even used an old netgear remote with Apple TV.

I don’t think games are necessarily going to take off for it but I think Apple understands that. It’s nice for those who want it.

I dislike the remote as others have already stated. Backlit buttons would make it much easier to see what’s going on and be useful.

Not specifically apples fault but another thing i would like. Many people use their ATv as a streaming device now for live tv services such as YouTube tv, ATT tv etc.

It’d be nice if you could use those apps and say “change channel to ESPN” and have those change. As of now the Apple TV will open the ESPN app no problem, but within individual apps Siri integration is hit or miss. Again not specifically apples “fault” but would be nice to have

I don't even bother with the remote any more since the iPhone has the old Remote app (for old ATV's or controlling iTunes/Music on a Mac), the new Remote app, and the Control Center remote. Of course the new Remote App has a swipe interface while the Control Center has a tap interface. No idea why they aren't the same.

Apple is working on a new version of the Apple TV that includes an upgraded remote with Find My-like capabilities, reports Bloomberg. The tidbit was shared in a wider report on Apple's fall product launch plans.

Apple has been rumored to be working on an upgrade to the 4K Apple TV for some time, and it's been believed that the device could launch at any time, but Bloomberg says that the new set-top box might not ship until 2021.

Along with a faster processor for gaming, the upgraded Apple TV is expected to include a redesigned remote, which is something that we've heard in prior rumors. The new remote is said to have a feature similar to Find My iPhone, which would make a lost remote easier to locate within the house.

We don't know much else about the Apple TV from prior rumors, except that it might come with higher capacity 64 and 128GB storage options.

Bloomberg does not provide details on when the new Apple TV might launch in 2021, but given that signs of the device have been popping up in betas since January 2020, it could see a launch early in the year.

I held out for a while buying one thinking a new one was going to be announced any time. I finally gave in and bought the 4k 64gb and now I really don’t see the purpose of Apple creating a more powerful device. It streams better than any other device I've used including my 1 year old SmartTV and PS4. Chromecast, Roku, Amazon: blows them out of the water.

Maybe if they increased their gaming capability or added 8k option for future use would there be a reason for a stronger unit.

The only thing I want on the current unit is a dual TV tuner.

People complaining about the remote, there is one built into your phone’s control center that works amazing (keyboard, saved passwords, etc.) The stock remote has a nice home in the dark closet.

The 4K has a white ring around the Menu button, making it very easy to tell which way the remote is pointed without looking at it.

I would like a dedicated “change user“ button - there’s too much swiping and too much overloaded functionality in different buttons. If everything could be done by button (instead of needing swipes) it would also mean that any IR remote could be used, even for that “advanced functionality,” instead.

Check you accessibility settings. The control center remote has the option for both swipe or directional pad. Accessibility>Physical and Motor>Apple TV Remote. I don’t even have the app installed. Not sure why one is even available considering the built in one. Maybe for older version IOS users?

Of course, by the time you’ve groped around the remote to get your bearings on the white ring, you’ve managed to inadvertantly click the touch pad part three or four times, and now you’re watching “tiny restaurants in the aardvarks” on HGTV for some reason, and you don’t even subscribe to that.

The A12X is a great chip, but it's two years old... If Apple is really wanting to make a push into gaming (and I think they should), I hope they put the A14X in there. An A14X with the cooling fan that's already in the AppleTV would be great for gaming! It would surely help devs take the AppleTV more seriously.

Also, there are a ton of indicators that Apple is trying to make the Mac a better gaming platform. So if they beef up the AppleTV for gaming, they'll be able to present the full gaming experience: On the go? iPhone/iPad. At home on your Mac? Have at it. Wanna play with family? The AppleTV plays all the same games. Oh, and it's all cloud synced so you can pick up and play wherever you left off, on ANY of your devices. To me, that would be a pretty killer system.

I've been waiting a LONG time for a new model,

There are three separate buttons on the left, while on the right you have one small and one long button. You can feel if with your thumb - the long button is bottom right.
Yeah, it’s like reading Braille. 😛
