Lack of ability to raise or lower the height of the monitor. IMO, an iMac is a poor choice. Of course, I'm looking at this through the eyes of someone who gets a sore back and neck when I can't adjust my screen exactly how I want it.

Does and iMac do VESA?

Good ol’ Apple making colors price exclusive again. I think I like the HP better anyway, the iMac looks generic.

Larger display, keyboard, MacOS support.

The latter is important for certain types of work. But overall I agree that it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy one of these over an iPad Pro and a $150 monitor. I guess it will look better than an ad-hoc setup with the iPad pro.
Right, I get that, but I am purely talking about internals (electronics), which are now identical for the iMac and iPad Pro. macOS support is now simply a technicality, and Apple could choose to enable it overnight. Then just hook up an external monitor, a keyboard and mouse and bam, you're good to go.

Now, it remains to be seen how underclocked the M1 in the iPad Pro is vs. the iMac, but given the thinness of both, I can't imagine by too much. Does the new iMac have active cooling?

It will probably make the final cost around 1899, but, yes, the same upgrade options that we have for the other M1 models are available here.

I think that the colors are fun, and I don't care about a chin because it has no baring on usable screen space. On the other hand, I'm personally glad that I picked up a mini and didn't wait.

There's a worldwide chip shortage right now, so that may have been a factor, and 16GB is wayyyyyyy overkill for macOS, unless you're runnign high-end professional productivity apps. These iMacs are geared for consumers. 16GB of memory would be seriously wasted on most users. macOS still runs steller on only 4GB of RAM.
16Gb unified memory is an option according to the specs page. It's exactly as expected for a machine running on the M1 SoC - 2Tb storage is a pleasant surprise.

mac mini is $$700. So this is $600 for the 4.5k 24" monitor w speakers and camera plus m/k or just k. And actually the $1299 model is only 7 core gpu while Mac Mini is 8 core.

It's all cool until you look at the price tag. And then crawl back into your hole for another year of winter.

Doesn't even look that bad if you put it like this tbh. The problem is giving away upgradeability. A good monitor can last you a long time and the mac mini can be replaced.

They should have just done an upgraded version of the iMac G4, but with multiple colors. You could have put all of the hardware in the base, and still had amazing speakers, studio mics, and even the 1080p FaceTime camera. On top of that you could have made it even thinner and removed that god awful chin.
Screen would have made it top heavy and liable to (expensively) fall over.

They should’ve just made the bezels and chin the same color and material used on the backside. And if they were determined to keep the chin, at least add the Apple logo to the chin but make it the same color tone of the iMac (the same way it is on the current MacBooks and iPhone Pro).

This white bezel mess is giving me flashbacks of the 7th gen Nano.

Reminded me of that monstrosity as well. Looks like a knockoff...

I don't get there reasoning. The MacMini and the MacBook Air have the option to install 16GB of ram, why not iMac? The iPad gets 2T of space and the iMac gets a tiny 256 or 500GB. Come on Apple. I can live with the smaller amount of space, but I can't with the ram. They will put the drive and the ram in the larger version when it comes out and charge double what they are charging for this thing.

"Actual diagonal screen size is 23.5 inches." Seems like false advertising.
Screens have been sized in "classes" for quite some time now. The iMac is a 24" class screen.

The only factor was the original poster made a claim without checking the website. The iMac can have up to 16GB of memory and up to 2TB of storage. It's also not really overkill. Lot's of people buy memory and storage with an eye towards longevity and future proofing. I haven't seen anything about user replaceable ram or storage so buying as much as one can afford right now gives a bit of comfort down the line.

The contrast between the bezels and the chin colors is really jarring, and something that I cannot get over. And, the missing Apple logo on the front, makes it seem like an unbranded/generic machine. Such a shame.

I mean we forget the targetted audience here, students and kids. this will sell like no tomorrow.
I'm not a student or a kid, but I'm also not a pro who needs a powerhouse of a machine. This iMac actually suffices my needs perfectly, and I would've been thrilled to buy one if there were a space gray version with black bezels. Hell, I would even buy an orange or blue iMac *if* the entire thing were one color and it had black bezels. It's the two-tone pastel scheme that feels very juvenile for me.

Luckily, I had pulled the trigger on an M1 mini a few weeks ago so it looks like that will be staying with me for a while now. I'm pretty sure the Pro version that is yet to come will out-price me.

Still kinda bizarre that there's no 16GB option when some of the other M1 offerings have it.
I think you'll be able to customize it to 16GB. If you go to look at existing M1 models, they offer options based on storage size, then you can up the RAM on the next page, but the iMac doesn't let you click through to the next page yet.

Specs page shows all options including 16Gb RAM - but you have to buy from Apple unless the retailer brings in customised models.
