Is this all that surprising? MagSafe Duo came out last fall and since then, iPhone 13 Pro has a bigger camera bump (so it doesn't quite align quite well, although still charges fine) and fast charging is new to Apple Watch Series 7.

Apple should and must update MagSafe Duo, but you can't expect older product to properly support the latest products.

Haha! So basically the only other reason for justifying an upgrade (from series 6) is the 1mm increase in screen size.

Glad I cancelled my order even more now!
This is like the 4th time you mentioned being happy about cancelling your order besides making an entire thread about it.

At this point, who are you trying to convince? Yourself, perhaps?

I really don’t understand the horror here.
None of the Apple Watch chargers support fast charging other than the new one released with the S7.

Why do we expect a device released some time ago to support a new feature? Fast charging wasn’t around then so it’s perfectly logical that it doesn’t support it.

Anyone who needs fast charging gets a new puck in the box. And can continue to charge at a normal speed with the duo when travelling or on their bedside table.

Maybe a new versione will be made. For now.. Amen, this charger is for when you are not at home, a mobile pad. In this scenario most of times you don’t care so much about fast charging and sleep tracking. Just my 2 cents.

Please don't bring logic into the discussion ;)

I miss Steve Jobs. Crap like this wouldn't happen. All these excessive product lines wouldn't happen. Someone's butt would be chewed so hard it would be entertaining to watch. They develop these things like 3 years ahead and can't realize when they make something that won't work with the following year's devices. That's some serious oversight that I think Jobs wouldn't have missed.
Of course it would have. Remember the launch of the iPhone 4? MobileMe? Apple maps? All under Steve’s watch…

So wasteful. So much for environmentalism.
Good point there. More people will buy the same thing twice, once the fast charging version comes out. I’m not a technical expert but from my subjective consumer standpoint this feels like a ripoff. Gadgets should not become outdated so fast.

The sooner Tim Cook steps down the better. Apple needs a replacement like Steve who had an eye for perfection and not constantly releasing stuff that’s sub par. Don’t get me wrong, some of what Tim has done has been great but Apple is no longer the “it just works” company and they should be trying to get that back.

I agree but who? I can’t think of anyone that exists who would be appropriate. Except for me.

So people are outraged that an accessory release last year doesn’t support a new feature from a device this year?

The accessory still does the same job as they advertised it before. Overpriced? Yes. but seriously how is this ‘news’ surprising to anyone.

No one is surprised. We know Apple design is a joke now. Cents before sense.

Just yet another example of Apple refusing to adopt basic standards until dragged kicking and screaming.

Apple put a lightning port on the Duo just to make sure it would be immediately out of date. At least it lasted a year though. Even worse that they put a lightning port on the iPhone 13 Pro which dated the device the moment the ProRes format was released and file transfers became hysterically unreasonable.

I just find it ironic they took away the charging bricks but their overpriced stuff ends up obsolete quickly. Great for the planet, really.

It’s more than just the lightning port that stops it from being able to fast charge. They already have a charging puck last year with usb-c that you can buy separately that still won’t do fast charging.

the article here is purely about the duo and yes, people in this thread seemed surprised by the lack of fast charging ability, a feature that didn’t exist last year when this accessory was released.

Say all you want about Apple’s approach in general, I don’t disagree with some points, but that’s not what we’re discussing here.

I’ve yet to be convinced that any method of charging other than by a “classic” charger has any benefit whatsoever. Charging the old fashioned way honestly just works and it’s better for the battery. And it is not hard to throw a charger into your bag when traveling. To each their own but I’m not buying a wireless charger anytime soon.

Oh yeah that’s how many million tons of charger into trash, probably already offset the charger they didn’t include.

I don’t have them and don’t plan to buy them but I blame tech world on not having a single thought about producing long lasting devices AND accessories anymore.

Next story: my iPhone 12 case does not fit my iPhone 13. Both this charger and my iPhone 12 case came out the same time basically. So shouldn't it fit?? No. The charger still works, it just does not do the fast charging that the newer cord does. This is a non story. It was never advertised as a "fast charge for next years potential fast charging watch". Nothing to see here.

Public safety message: for any of you buying a device with the expectation it will self upgrade next year to work with something that was not released this year, DON'T!

No one really NEEDS fast charging. New watches are “backwards compatible” with old chargers. The Duo still works as it always has and doesn’t suddenly stop working.

If people are throwing these things in the trash as you implied because of this then there are bigger issues.

MagSafe Duo seems great for travel and mostly thought of for overnight use. I would still prefer it to charge phone and watch at max speed, but max speed right now for both is a complicated issue. It takes a “MacBook” grade 30W charger to max out iPhone, and new cable to max out AW with an “iPhone and iPad” grade charger.

Things are a little all over the place right now for what can truly be max speed vs. what will charge your device and you move in with your life.

The perfectionist in gets a little irked at this. But at the end of the day, I can charge my phone any time I need to and most other people can too, and most people charge overnight anyway where optimized battery charging is slowing down the current until morning.

So here we are.

So, more environmentally friendly to make people buy new charging devices everywhere. LOL

Apple, quit claiming to be environmental friendly on your keynotes, when you contribute massively to landfills everywhere, when requiring a new charger to get max benefits.

Nobody should be throwing electronic devices and cables in the garbage! That's not Apple's fault. Oh, my mind cringles thinking of someone throwing devices in the household garbage! 😲

Maybe it's just me, but our Canadian province of BC has excellent recycling depots in every community, accepting electronics for free.
