Kuo argues that Apple’s facial recognition technology as a biometric security solution is serving the iPhone line well.

I’m sorry but how this passes for news is beyond me. He doesn’t know squat. He’s just vomiting eatevrt thoughts are in his head into a research note and then shopping it to rumor sites who he knows will publish anything he puts out.

So a fork has now been created in the road towards future biometric authentication: On Screen fingerprint recognition which every other smartphone manufacturer will eventually implement, or FaceID used only by Apple. Time will tell which technology ultimately is favored, but history is not on Apple's side when a tech company decides to "go it alone" with proprietary technology. And anyway, Animoji are now too entrenched in iOS and they (it) ain't going anywhere without a lot of screaming and kicking (and whinnying) along the way.

I just tested it at my desk - I was sort of curious, and funny enough I had a tape measure sitting right here - worked in the 22-24" range, through I'm not sure about the effect of different lighting conditions. I think 24" is right near the outer limit, like another few inches (for as much as I could test it) and it stopped working.

Awesome, thanks!

Currently I have a stand on my desk that will get replaced by a Qi wireless stand when I get a new phone... as well as a car mount.

But I always wondered if I have to lean my face closer for FaceID to work. It sounds like 22-24" should be fine for desk and car.

(though I'm still a fan of TouchID... if it ain't broke...) :p

I wish the 2 modes would be developed side by side.

There are several uses in which one of them is inherently superior to the other (and vice versa).

But that probably won't happen, Apple has a clear lead on Face ID and some Android manufacturers seem all in in full screen FP ID.

On tablets and computers I do wish for Face ID to show up as in that use it seems to me to be the clear better method.

Watch them add it next year.

Lmao I was thinking the same thing.

Wouldn't it be kind of weird though? Like I wonder how that reveal would look: "We LOVE Face ID, but we've scrapped it in favor of the return of Touch ID, but THIS time it's built into the display!"

Like, I'm all for it, but I just wonder if they would do Face ID AND Tocuh ID or just one... Or what.

Hopefully this means we get to keep 3D touch then. Unless of course Apple plans on implementing some as yet unknown screen tech that would prohibit it.

Well no, because Koh has also claimed Apple will DROP 3D Touch, personally I think the man makes up half of his ‘guesses’..

I would rather Touch ID and 3D Touch, but if Face ID actually works.. then I’d keep 3D Touch.

The wife didn't even want to know what I was doing ... hahahaha :D Though it's definitely not the worst thing she's caught me doing with a tape measure ... o_O

It works decently well off angle too, always surprised at the field of operation (which covers me for how I'm using a phone 99.9% of the time). I guess with the car use case, it depends on the car, the mount location, seat position - honestly, I don't know how far I am away from like my vents[?] where a mount might be installed, seems like it's right at the outside range. I use CP in both our cars, so generally the phone just gets plugged in and tossed into the center/armrest console.

I want the Face to be "ID", and my fingerprint as my "passcode".

I think I will give Face ID one more chance in the coming iPhone. Face ID 2.0 may finally be better than Touch ID 2.0

It's not a coincidence that the best selling iPhone of 2018 was the iPhone 8, not iPhone X w/ Face ID.

I'm glad I'm one of those smart people. There are still many uses where Touch ID is still faster and more practical.

Apple will be the butt of jokes in the future for this lack of common sense.

I have a feeling other manufacturers will implement this technology as standard and Apple will follow only to refine it, time will tell. Apple should include this tech for optional two factor authentication for more security. Hopefully Face ID 2.0 will be even more refined and polished.

I suspect that Apple is awaiting the commercialisation of organic photodetectors (OPD) and maybe also vein imaging. I believe the current fingerprint on display use a silicon photodiode as the detector meaning that the fingerprint detection is in a specific location on the screen. With and OPD the detector can be under the whole screen which would allow you to TouchID unlock without looking (like you can do with the TouchID iPhones by feeling where the home button is). If a near infrared light source is used in conjunction with fingerprint on screen tech it is possible to also see the vein pattern in the finger which gives two benefits - extra biometric id (vein pattern is unique) and also provides proof that a fake fingerprint is not being used (fake fingerprints will not have blood-flow).

When these two technologies are completed I think TouchID will make a comeback and complement FaceID.

Gee, what a surprise. Perhaps due to the True Depth Camera system being capable of a lot more than just authentication; a fingerprint scanner is a single-purpose component.

Rather invest that money into making FaceID 10x faster and work in landscape.

You would suddenly change your tune if Apple announced this within the next couple years.

It would be all: “Wow.. yeah really glad Apple added this makes it sooo much more convenient than just Face ID”, or something along those lines.

What's the distance limitation of FaceID?

Let's say I have my iPhone in one of those car-mounts... can it see my face from roughly 24" away?

That's one reason I might not be too keen on abandoning TouchID in future iPhones... now I can just rest my thumb on the fingerprint sensor to unlock it to change songs or whatever.

Get a radio with CarPlay. Problem solved

Yes, because doing so would be going back on the idea that Face ID is the ideal and Apple never makes errors.

Not really surprised. I figured with the iPhone X, Apple was going to gradually move away from Touch ID and integrate future devices with Face ID instead.

Why would they at this point? They already spent money on FaceID. TouchID in the glass would be redundant. Personally I would’ve preferred the latter but that ship has sailed.

Similar to another poster, I frequently go from full beard to relatively clean-shaven and have never had it skip a beat.

Face ID works great for me on my I phone X. Hoping it will be faster with the release in the next few weeks
