The problem there is that usually your phone is facing the back of the car, not towards the steering wheel, so you'd have to lean far over to get it to recognize your face. What's the distance limitation of FaceID?
Let's say I have my iPhone in one of those car-mounts... can it see my face from roughly 24" away?
That's one reason I might not be too keen on abandoning TouchID in future iPhones... now I can just rest my thumb on the fingerprint sensor to unlock it to change songs or whatever.
I want Touch ID in the display so badly. Face ID just doesn't cut it. It's too annoying to have to hover your face over your phone every time you want to check something when it's on your desk, and the number of failures compared to Touch ID is at least an order of magnitude higher. But no matter how much better they make Face ID, I'm not sure how they can address the problem of needing your face front and center each time. Perhaps an extremely wide angle lens? If it weren't for the gorgeous display and dual lens camera in a smaller form factor than the Plus on the iPhone X, I would have returned it for an iPhone 8.
You would suddenly change your tune if Apple announced this within the next couple years.
It would be all: “Wow.. yeah really glad Apple added this makes it sooo much more convenient than just Face ID”, or something along those lines.
Waste of time and resources. Why not do both?
Apple Watch is far faster for Apple Pay and what I use all the time.Sorry to say this but are you using Face ID correctly? FaceID works like 98-100% for me. I've only had to put my passcodes when I don't have adequate lighting but even when I have a tv on in the room but with lights off it works? Also, if I want to glance at the messages I received, depending on the settings I can just tap to wake the screen. If you have your settings set up for the lock screen you can view your notifications without FaceID otherwise, you'll need to unlock with FaceID to view the messages. Otherwise, It tells you the app with a notification but won't show the content unless you have your settings that way.
Also, FaceID is perfect for Apple Pay. You just double click when you're ready to purchase and it scans your face to approve. It's very seamless actually. I would definitely check your settings or change up how you use FaceID and how you set it up too. I've definitely had very few issues using it.
I just tested it at my desk - I was sort of curious, and funny enough I had a tape measure sitting right here - worked in the 22-24" range, through I'm not sure about the effect of different lighting conditions. I think 24" is right near the outer limit, like another few inches (for as much as I could test it) and it stopped working.
And if Apple is true to their word, iOS 12 will bring back a speedier 6s iPhone.Of course Apple isn't adopting Touch ID under glass in 2019. It takes them at least three years to copy an Android feature.
Looks like I'll be keeping my 6S awhile longer.
Face ID is significantly more secure than Touch ID.
It already did. The 6s is pretty, pretty good with iOS 12.And if Apple is true to their word, iOS 12 will bring back a speedier 6s iPhone.
It's ludicrous that it didn't work in landscape mode on day one.
I just wish they wouldn't force passcode requirements for services such as apple pay, and other home kit things. I don't want to have to waste time with a passcode.
I wish it came back, FaceID is not practical at all. When you phone is next you on you desk or on the couch and you want quick look you have to pick it up to unlock.
Apple invested a lot in FaceID. I don't see them moving away from it and only expanding the usage across devices.
i hope APple will make faceID even faster and put it on their macbook line and imac....it will be so convenient and so intuitive
On the whole I think it’s great and much prefer it to Touch ID , except when using it with Apple Pay,
Lmao I was thinking the same thing.
Wouldn't it be kind of weird though? Like I wonder how that reveal would look: "We LOVE Face ID, but we've scrapped it in favor of the return of Touch ID, but THIS time it's built into the display!"
Like, I'm all for it, but I just wonder if they would do Face ID AND Tocuh ID or just one... Or what.
The demand for all screen frontages without notches is gonna hurt Apple. FaceID while a nice feature has really hemmed them in.
I still think there is a solution around the corner so to speak for this issue. The main one being the front facing camera placement. The pop up selfie cam is one option, removing the front camera entirely and instead relying on a rear secondary screen for selfies might be another option. There is so much room for innovation and I hope Apple is trying out new things too rather than being stubborn with faceid only solutions.
