With all of the under screen Touch ID rumours last year it’s almost as though Apple spoofed the industry into heading down that development direction. Meanwhile, working on faceid and banking on it being better.

What's the distance limitation of FaceID?

Let's say I have my iPhone in one of those car-mounts... can it see my face from roughly 24" away?

That's one reason I might not be too keen on abandoning TouchID in future iPhones... now I can just rest my thumb on the fingerprint sensor to unlock it to change songs or whatever.
The problem there is that usually your phone is facing the back of the car, not towards the steering wheel, so you'd have to lean far over to get it to recognize your face.

I want Touch ID in the display so badly. Face ID just doesn't cut it. It's too annoying to have to hover your face over your phone every time you want to check something when it's on your desk, and the number of failures compared to Touch ID is at least an order of magnitude higher. But no matter how much better they make Face ID, I'm not sure how they can address the problem of needing your face front and center each time. Perhaps an extremely wide angle lens? If it weren't for the gorgeous display and dual lens camera in a smaller form factor than the Plus on the iPhone X, I would have returned it for an iPhone 8.

Sorry to say this but are you using Face ID correctly? FaceID works like 98-100% for me. I've only had to put my passcodes when I don't have adequate lighting but even when I have a tv on in the room but with lights off it works? Also, if I want to glance at the messages I received, depending on the settings I can just tap to wake the screen. If you have your settings set up for the lock screen you can view your notifications without FaceID otherwise, you'll need to unlock with FaceID to view the messages. Otherwise, It tells you the app with a notification but won't show the content unless you have your settings that way.

Also, FaceID is perfect for Apple Pay. You just double click when you're ready to purchase and it scans your face to approve. It's very seamless actually. I would definitely check your settings or change up how you use FaceID and how you set it up too. I've definitely had very few issues using it.

I was so disappointed with FaceID, that I went back to the iPhone 8 with TouchID after four or five months. I so wish Apple could just allow either and put a TouchID in the Apple logo on the back of every iPhone.

And to me, FaceID on an iPad or Mac isn’t nearly the problem, as only enter them a small percentage of times per day compared to iPhones. And holding in front of face is natural with those devices. With an iPhone, it’s unlocked before I even have it all the way out of my pocket with TouchID. The iPhone is a fail with FaceID. It has to be able to read my face from any angle I want for it to make any sense to me. When I am in a meeting or with friends. Sometimes I just want to look at it down in my lap as to not disturb or disrupt a conversation or meeting.

There is no reason to solve a problem that didn’t exist. TouchID was my favorite Apple invention next to iPhone. FaceID is a joke in comparison. When I enter my iPhone 100+ times per day, TouchID just worked 98% of the time. Might fail with sweaty or wet hands. FaceID failed about the same rate as long as I hold it up to my face like a jackass.

Maybe Apple needs to only come up with solutions that solve problems. I know there is no real leader there, as there is no innovator there that can make decisions. Nothing Ive has done has been great since Jobs passed. Cook just isn’t a visionary. Sure, he is on pace with AR and VR, but make the MacBook Pro a real usable device by adopting Nvidia GPUs which can help make AR and VR reality for developers.

Make eGPUs that work with Nvidia GPUs and that are replaceable within the device - unlike Blackmagic.

Remember networking which with apple always worked. Apple displays and Apple accessories count. Tim, you have lined your pockets well. Time to step down and let an innovator takeover the ship.

Fingerprint or TouchID anywhere on an iPhone is a win versus a stupid solution that was never better than TouchID. Fix real problems, that’s what Apple has always been about.

Apple Watch is far faster for Apple Pay and what I use all the time.

As for using it properly, yes, yes I do. I have even turned off the attention setting where you need to be looking at it, and that helped a little but it still has a lot of failures—sometimes multiple times in a row in a well lit area such as when I'm trying to unlock my Mint app to check my finances. But the fact that it needs to be used "properly" isn't a good sign that this is a good technology. With Touch ID you press the home button like you would any time you pick up the device and it just works. I never had it fail unless my hands were fairly wet or I was wearing gloves. I could go weeks without Touch ID failing. I didn't have to hold it a certain way. I didn't have to be looking at my phone directly head on to use it. Some people on the forums think my device might be one of the select few that has hardware issues. But how many times can I be one of the select few? To start off I'm pretty tech savvy and I also baby my gear. Yet time after time there's something that goes wrong. Like my 10.5" iPad Pro last summer the lighting port died after a few weeks. Or my iPhone 6s home button would get really hot to the touch in the first few weeks of getting it at launch and the device would reboot so they had to send me a replacement. Or the iPhone 6 Plus crashing constantly (worst iPhone I've ever had by far). Or my MacBook Pro display retaining the image all the time so they had to swap it out for a new display. Or the one I had before that which would overheat when they switched to four cores. Or the one before that which has the Nvidia GPU problem. There are more, going back to my original iPhone developing bubbles under the display that needed to be replaced. Early adopter curse? There's no way I can be the only one that has these problems. Apple always makes it right and maybe I should have pressed it more for Face ID by trying to bring it in but it's kinda difficult to prove spur of the moment and I also don't live near and Apple Store (~120 miles) which can make diagnosis tricky. I'm hoping my iPhone XS that I get on iUP will be better.

I just tested it at my desk - I was sort of curious, and funny enough I had a tape measure sitting right here - worked in the 22-24" range, through I'm not sure about the effect of different lighting conditions. I think 24" is right near the outer limit, like another few inches (for as much as I could test it) and it stopped working.

I have a magnetic vent mount in my BMW and my X can see me and unlock whilst I’m driving. Was surprised the first time i swiped up and it unlocked. It is on the driver side middle vent and is about arms length from my face and is ever so slightly angled towards me.

Of course Apple isn't adopting Touch ID under glass in 2019. It takes them at least three years to copy an Android feature.

Looks like I'll be keeping my 6S awhile longer.
And if Apple is true to their word, iOS 12 will bring back a speedier 6s iPhone.

Don’t want to go back to fingerprints, seems so clunky on the iPad and iPhone 8 having to touch for passwords etc vs looking at the phone (which you are already doing).

While I have not tried FaceID, it doesn't sound better than touch ID to me. You can unlock your phone with touch ID even if it's not near your face, such as on a nightstand next to your bed, while taking it out of your pocket, etc... Also I like knowing that recognition can only happen with a deliberate touch, and not "automatically" whenever the phone thinks I want to unlock it. Also, FaceID pretty much makes the notch necessary, while touch ID, if integrated into the screen, could allow for a much smaller notch. Not to mention touch ID seems cheaper to manufacture.

Face ID is significantly more secure than Touch ID.

How can Face ID be more secure when you cannot change it? You only have 1 face.

Most people have 10 fingers. With Touch ID, you can change between each finger if you wanted to.

The demand for all screen frontages without notches is gonna hurt Apple. FaceID while a nice feature has really hemmed them in.

I still think there is a solution around the corner so to speak for this issue. The main one being the front facing camera placement. The pop up selfie cam is one option, removing the front camera entirely and instead relying on a rear secondary screen for selfies might be another option. There is so much room for innovation and I hope Apple is trying out new things too rather than being stubborn with faceid only solutions.

This is why I’ll probably be moving away from Apple next time around. iPhone X is a solid entry and the only thing I really don’t like is the faceID. I don’t like it enough to switch platforms.

I'm a FaceID fan. Works 99% of the time. I now get confused on how to unlock my iPad. My Mac gets unlocked by my watch, and my watch when I unlock my iPhone. A circle of happiness.

Is anyone surprised?

FaceID is fantastic and TouchID just feels old and frustrating now that I’ve used FaceID.

Mr Ming knows everything. With a 50:50 chance of probability he' going to be wrong, or he's going to be right. All bow before Mr. Ming.

They may eventually put it again, as they aim to remove the notch completely. Unless they somehow manage to put all the tech for FaceID in the tiny bezels of the display.

I'm ok with this as long as Face ID continues to mature. Right now I will say that Touch ID is situationally better in many more cases than Face ID, but not by an enormous margin.

If Face ID can just be a tiny bit faster as well as see you at different angles andnorientations, I think it will surpass Touch ID in ease of use and utility. I'm imagining a situation where thenohone simply knows that you're wanting to unlock and it's one step ahead of you (almost like when you rest your thin on Touch ID in your pocket while pulling it out; I know nearly everyone had done this).

It's ludicrous that it didn't work in landscape mode on day one.

Compared to what other manufacturer that DID have it working in landscape mode and still offered the quality Apple provided? Could you have designed a better solution? If not, why are you complaining that others didn't do it?

I just wish they wouldn't force passcode requirements for services such as apple pay, and other home kit things. I don't want to have to waste time with a passcode.

What are you talking about? When does Apple Pay force you to use a passcode?

Apple invested a lot in FaceID. I don't see them moving away from it and only expanding the usage across devices.

i hope APple will make faceID even faster and put it on their macbook line and imac....it will be so convenient and so intuitive

... and that is where FaceID belongs--on computers, especially portables. Phones are better suited to TouchID because it is always on your hand and being touched when in use.

On the whole I think it’s great and much prefer it to Touch ID , except when using it with Apple Pay,

Apple should be using TouchID or FOD because it works better with Apple Pay. To say FaceID is great except when using it for its (IMO) most important function (securing payment transactions) seems ironic.

Lmao I was thinking the same thing.

Wouldn't it be kind of weird though? Like I wonder how that reveal would look: "We LOVE Face ID, but we've scrapped it in favor of the return of Touch ID, but THIS time it's built into the display!"

Like, I'm all for it, but I just wonder if they would do Face ID AND Tocuh ID or just one... Or what.

Maybe they'll let you rub your face on your screen to unlock your phone.

LOL seriously? Several OEMs are copying the notch already, and even Google is jumping in to that pool. As for a pop-up selfie camera, that idea, with all due respect, is absurd. Introducing a mechanical point of failure like that is a non-starter, and slapping a second screen on the back to take photos of oneself sounds like a tremendous waste of money. This is a trillion dollar multinational, not the Wonka factory.
