Jaw-dropping

Hi-res TIFFs of the interior and the cube are up on Apple's retail site for download.

These photos are amazing; they point to Apple's lead in computer aesthetics. I wonder if the design team studied in Scandinavia, as the concepts of starkness are very evident.

Has no one else thought, "Hmm...I wonder if the cube points to the revision in form factor of the 'Mac Pro'?" With another post somewhere else on this website hinting at a smaller form factor in the next iteration of the Mac Pro, I can't help to wonder if this store hints at that?

Intriguing.

And to the fellow MacRumors-er who posted a link to the Borg cube...brilliant! :)

We concur.

Now if only my husband would let me buy him a new MacBook to replace his aging PB! :(

 Ditch him and run away with me! I'll let you buy me a MacBook anytime. :p

Resisting all comments about people who live in glass houses and stones, they're going to have to spend a lot of time cleaning that thing. This is New York - a walk outside is enough to cover your face in grime. I'd expect that within 6 months to a year that cube and glass staircase won't be nearly as pretty. And that's not even considering the city's prolific avian population, snow, ice (which, because of global warming, maybe won't be big factors), and the filthy rain that falls over the city.

Yeah, OK it looks nice, but how much did it cost to build? How much is its maintenence (sp?) budget? Apple can spend its money however it wants, but what a monument to conspicuous consumption.

Hmm, I'll have to see if I can catch the train down. I've never been to an Apple Store's proper grand opening. I was to the one in Danbury about a week or so after it opened, though.

Seeing all those MacBook screens lined up is like a hall of mirrors. It's horrendous. I cannot stand that they added that reflective screen.

Freehold? Nice! That is right next to my parent's house. That should be a relatively big store and will do extremely well in that area.

Negative votes

Are all from the thousands of birds that will surely break their beaks on this giant glass cube of death. Seriously, are they going to hire people to pick up all the carcasses throughout the day?

How does one actually WIN one of those free MacBook-per-hour's?

Is it just whoever in line enters the store on the hour? Or is there a random drawing every hour? Or something else?

I'm guessing it is as you walk in.

Anyway, I have to know... how on Earth are people voting this Negative?

So the Great Glass Elevator actually looks like a giant syringe eh?

Fill the void with the Kool Aid and pump it right into my veins....!!!!!

Hey, anything to decrease the pigeon population (aka "rats with wings").

You were there?!

Edit: Anyone check out this article? The elevator in the middle of the spiral staircase looks so awesome. :D That's the only photo I am looking at, though... I'm not spoiling it for myself!

Also, I'm kind of disappointed to see it's only on one floor, as opposed to being multi-story. However, the article states it is the same size as SoHo. I absolutely love the SoHo Apple Store for its size, so that reassures it for me.

Okay, just to get a number... who is officially going to the grand opening? And what time? I plan to get in line at 4:00 PM; that way I'm almost guaranteed a free t-shirt.

All structures are designed for these types of loads...engineers aren't stupid!

No, they aren't. But everyone makes mistakes and miscalculations.

I am reminded of the Hancock building by the great I.M. Pei, who also designed the Louvre Pyramid to which this Apple cube has been compared.

Everything has a structural limit, I am just curious as to what the limit is here.

Bird killer?

Looks impressive, but I'm worried that the transparent Borg cube is going to cause the deaths of many fine feathered friends. Birds don't understand glass. In major cities the Audobon society gets skyscraper owners to put up nets to stop migrating birds from slamming into the glass (breaking their necks) and they collect dead birds and rehabilitate the injured all over the streets.

Boo to Steve for not thinking of this. Tinting the glass would be a start.

Story updated with links to more info and images. Anyone have the hi-res tiff's? If so, can you send hi-rez JPG's to me? (webmaster@macrumors.com). (Don't need the 10MB TIFF, just a few hundred k JPGs fine.) Or upload them to guides.macrumors.com
