back to school in may/june is just a marketing opportunity to sell more products, get foot traffic increased, and move outdated items that will be replaced with the next generation over the summer/fall. i read there is a lot of "wink wink nudge nudge" that goes on over the question of what is a student.

does that mean if i have a child in 8th grade, and want to get them a macbook, i as a parent cannot purchase one with an educational discount?

I just bought a Macbook Pro a few days ago for school, I had no idea about this program. Think they'd rein burst me? My guess is no.. oh well wishful thinking.

Well, if you bought it a few days ago... it might be a little hassle but maybe it's worth it to you?

You could return it and rebuy it when the program starts even if Apple won't let you participate.

here's a question: i purchased a macbook pro on may 14. i tried to negotiate a price match with a $999 microcenter offer. the apple store countered with an educational price of $1099. i bought it there for that price. now i see the back-to-school promo may be happening soon. should i be able to qualify getting the "free" rebated ipod touch by showing the educational receipt?
or would i have to return the original purchase and start over. i am not currently enrolled in college.
Can't hurt to try; but if/when they ask you for some indication of your higher education status you might want a good story prepared.

Actually it could hurt to try if he doesn't have a good story prepared. Apple does have in the clause somewhere that if they find you lied about educational status with the education discount, they can charge you the difference that you should have paid. So if you get a different sales clerk who is feeling snarky (or doesn't believe you that the Apple staff gave you that as a concession), you might find you're paying the difference.

So the worst case scenario is that they pay the sticker price. How does that contradict anything I said?

You said it wouldn't hurt. I would say having to pay more than he already has does constitute as "hurting" or rather being worse off than he was before.

If one goes into a store ineligible for the student discount they "should" expect to pay the full price. If they get the student discount they do not pay the full price. If at a later date Apple determines ineligibility for the discount, the most they can charge is the difference to bring the cost up to the full price.

Thus, nothing is lost past the undiscounted value. I don't see how this is disputable.

Look, at this point he *already got* the discounted price. So we can just take it for granted he paid the lower price. So if he goes back and brings it to some one else's attention who didn't give him that discount, that guy could go about trying to get him to pay the difference.

And therefore, he pays more than he already paid that he *would not have paid if he didn't go back*. <- There is the important part.

So by going back, he could cause himself to pay more than *he already did*. It's not much more, but still, that is making his price worse. Therefore, "hurting".

Yes, one could argue he should have paid the higher price (though he could have gotten the computer for even cheaper going elsewhere which is why they gave him that discount at least), but he *didn't*. So that point is totally *moot*!

Anyways, I don't even understand why you are making a big deal about this. All I did was point out that he could possibly end up paying more if he does go back (hopefully not, but what I'm saying is there is that risk).

Judging by the length of our respective responses, I'm not the one making a big deal about it. The argument that asking someone to pay the list price for something "hurts" them makes no sense to me, but different strokes for different folks.

No, if you look at most of my posts, I'm a wordy person. That's just my personality.

Secondly, when I see it doesn't hurt, to me that means that at most nothing will change or at least change for the worse. And sorry, even if it's not that much, I do consider having to pay more meaning that something did change for the worse.

just bought my MBP 15 2.3 in store should fall within their 14 days policy, and from what ive heard this way I dont have to do a rebate they will just send me a new ipod! and im hoping it will be the first gen iPads they give out!

Hi everyone,I'm in VietNam. They also have Apple Store VN. Will my children receive Back To School promotion like in US?

So are they running the iPod AND the printer rebate this year, does anyone know? Also would a confirmation letter from the University I am starting at in September be enough to qualify for the offer, in store?

Cheers

Does the rebate and student pricing only apply if you buy it at the Apple Store (or online Apple Store) or can you buy it from any other reseller and get the student discount and $199 rebate on the iPod?

As in, can I buy it from B&H Photo at the, and an iPod from B&H and use that receipt to get my $199 rebate?
