I'd like to buy the magic keyboard numeric with touch ID for my MBP 16". Is that even possible without buying an imac ?
It would be good to know if these TouchID keyboards are compatible with all M1 devices including the iPad Pros. I am specifically interested in compatibility with the M1 Mac Mini and of course, if they will be sold as accessories independently from the iMac

also insane they didn’t update the Magic Mouse so it can be used while charging .. wtf Apple
Because it’s a WIRELESS mouse! Its supposed to be used wirelessly. If Apple intended it to be used when connected then no doubt the lightning port would be on the side near the front and it wouldn’t describe itself as wireless!

And it only takes a few minutes to charge if the battery is flat or nearly so - perfect time to grab a coffee or go to the loo or do some stretches!

That chin REALLY bothers me. Honestly, I was expecting something like a big iPad Pro. I would prefer it if it was half an inch thicker or even more but without that unbalanced lower part.
And now a horrible thing from the first Mac Mini generation is back: a power brick!!! In which you have to plug the Ethernet cable in!
It’s the first disappointing Apple launch for me since the trash can Mac Pro.

Insiders say Apple was so embarrassed of this iMac they forced production not to put their logo on the front.
But apparently not embarrassed enough to prevent them putting a honking great big one on the back, or filming an entire segment about it... ok sure.

it’s a logo. Nobody cares. Anybody who claims to care is looking for excuses to complain.

Magic Mouse charging port location is fine.

How is it "fine" when you can't use the mouse with the charging cable built in?

Putting the socket where the wire would be on a wired mouse so you can recharge it "on the go" is just a no-brainer. How "courageous" to ignore that (well, I suspect it was actually a case of every expense being spared when re-designing the original Magic Mouse to be rechargeable...)

Is there a way to have a full size Magic Keyboard instead ?
I never found any reference that says we can.

My state of mind regarding the new iMac :
  • Good 24-inch 4.5K display instead of 21.5-inch 4K. Hell the base model was even 1080p before today!
  • Good webcam, and much needed!
  • Good audio! The speakers have always been good on iMacs - I expect nothing less here. Maybe there was some exaggeration over how the microphones target YOUR voice only. I can't wait to test that.
  • Good - The return of the Mag Safe.
  • Bad - The chin is still there and not ready to go !
  • Bad - The bezels are thinner OK, but not as thin as one would expect, and they're white instead of black. Black is more immersive.
  • Bad - I cannot change the height of the screen - though I kind of expected this.
  • Bad - They haven't announced an M1X yet - though it will come in a few weeks - WWDC would be a perfect timing.
  • Bad - No Face ID. But we all know it's in the works. Maybe next iteration.
  • Ugly - There is now a power supply !?
  • Ugly - The Ethernet port is now... part of the power supply ?!?!?
  • Ugly - The Apple Logo is gone from the chin ? I mean, it was a good reason to keep the chin.
  • Ugly - The colors - but this is subjective (like many of my points). I suspect it won't have a resale value as good as silver. Give us white and black and silver if you want to go with colors.
I suspect the computer was too thin for the Ethernet port.
Overall, I would have expected a thicker iMac with no chin, smaller black bezels, and the Ethernet port in the computer itself. Maybe they will do something better with the 27-inch.

But I need to update my iMac so badly. I'll wait to see the 27-inch replacement and then make my choice.

such a bargain !
Can you add more than 8GB of ram for that price?
Can you add more than 256GB SSD for that price????
My GOD. 512GB SSD should be standard. 256GB TOO small

How is it fine? I can charge AND use my Logitech Pro mouse at the same time. How am I supposed to do that with the Magic Mouse?
It’s fine. I constantly forget to charge it at night. When it goes flat, plug it in, walk to the kitchen, or around the house for a minute or three. Come back, it’s got enough charge to last the rest of the day. It’s literally not a problem.

That was my exact thought. Who needs a magnetic cord on a desktop? No batteries makes that a big issue.

in addition the cord is now a proprietary connector. Why? They have changed a industry standard for no additional convenience. :(
My guess is because since they've moved the power supply to an external brick that the new iMac might be extremely light weight and susceptible to sliding easily. One pull of a physically connected cord might pull the iMac off the table.

I have a MacBook Pro with the M1 chip and 16 GB of RAM. So from what I understand, this iMac would not be any faster than my laptop?
Probably not.

Depending on cooling solution and thermals, the iMac's M1 might clock higher and/or sustain higher clock frequencies over longer periods of time, on extended CPU-/GPU-intensive workloads. Seems unlikely though, given the reduced physical footprint for the iMacs internals.

I would expect the iMac to perform rather similar to the MacBook Pro. Or the Mac mini M1 - there's been hardly any performance difference between the two in the tests, and I don't see why the thinner iMac should perform an Mac mini.
