I’m guessing it’s external so there’s no PSU required inside the thin case.
The moved the PSU outside to make be able to make the machine as thin at all. At least they included ethernet alongside the external PSU. Which was also done to decluter the amounts of cables.
In reality it could have been a standard usb-c cable. The only question remains how to secure the usb-c connection. If they could have dome something along with that we would at least have traded one standard for another.

the missing Apple Logo bothers me as well. Makes the chin stand out even more for some reason.

Imagine if the next color matching MacBook Pro comes with a white bezel too 🤢
Apple must feel there is something iconic and lasting about the chin.

I can't get over how ugly these are (and yes, I know "don't buy one" or "it's not for you!"---I am aware. We'd on a Mac enthusiast site, so deal with it).

Sort of.

I don't think the lowest end model comes with Ethernet.

You must be new to Apple. The original iMac followed by several generations were all the same rainbow colors, until they eventually went with white and then silver.
Yeah but those colors were super cool:

I think of Apple iMac like a 1970 Porsche it looks sporty but has a Volkswagen engine under the hood. It might look cool and fast until you drive it.
Uhhhh I think you mean most computers that aren't made by Apple? Or for smartphones as well... most other smartphones don't have software specifically made for the phone itself, which is why I've always been hesitant to buy a Galaxy phone... the only Android phone I would consider buying is a Pixel, but even those have other pullbacks that keep me buying Apple. And Apple has done the same thing with their computers, finally making chips that can take full advantage of the software and vice versa. Other computers such as Microsoft's Surface and pretty much any Dell and HP computer is exactly as you described... although those look more like 2021 Ferraris with a 1970 Volkswagen engine under the hood, which is an even greater disappointment than what you described. One would at least expect a decent looking computer to perform decently, and this is where Apple not only meets our expectations but constantly exceeds it. Look at pretty much ANY real world example of an M1 Mac/MacBook being used.

Doesn’t the Mac still save your system status when the power is lost?
Not the model I have. I have a 2011. Resetting SMC involves removing the power cable for 5 seconds so my system status isn't saved. I think the only thing that restores is Safari and where you left off. If editing on Final Cut Pro or iMovie you won't necessarily lose your project but it won't restore when you startup the computer.

I’ve had terrible experience with the 2020 Intel iMac. I was waiting for the M1 in the hopes that it would be great.
Sadly, no 27” option, and integrated memory and small storage? That’s definitely NOT great.
Integrated RAM is hugely expensive and limiting.
Maybe I’ll try the i9 iMac option, because the i7 has. Even totally unstable.
I hope a 27" or 30" becomes an option. When I got my 27", I thought it was huge, too big, but now I am so used to it.

Is there a way to have a full size Magic Keyboard instead ?
I never found any reference that says we can.
Yes, there is a magic keyboard with numeric keypad and Touch ID.

There are a few details still missing on the apple site. For example, there is reference to up two 2TB SSD but no details on price etc. Same with the bigger keyboard.

Apple today unveiled the new iMac models in seven bright, colorful shades including Blue, Green, Pink, Silver, Orange, Yellow, and Purple, and Apple is including a whole series of matching accessories for each machine.

More expensive iMac models come with a color matched Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad, power cord, and USB-C to Lightning Cable. Lower-end models feature the same accessories with the exception of the Touch ID Magic Keyboard, though an upgrade is available.

The Magic Keyboard features an aluminum base in the same color as the iMac with white keys, while the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad are equipped with a matching colored aluminum base. Both the Lightning cable and the power cord feature a braided design in the matching color, with the power cord also sporting a matching aluminum magnetic connector.

Right now, these color matched accessories are exclusive to the iMac. Apple is not selling the colorful Magic Keyboard with Touch ID or the color Magic Mouse options on a standalone basis.

Pricing on the iMac starts at $1299, and it will be available for preorder on April 30.

16GB Unified Memory??? How does that work in the scheme of usual RAM chips?
Thank you.

There’s basically 0% chance you could run a computer and display that size (and provide bus power to peripherals) using just 100w over USB-PD
