The built-in iPhone Wallet app will apparently be able to be deleted starting in iOS 16.1, according to code in today's iPadOS 16.1 beta that was found by 9to5Mac and confirmed by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser.

The code suggests the Wallet app will be downloadable from the App Store if it has been removed from an iPhone and the person with the iPhone attempts to use a feature like Apple Pay.

As of right now, the Wallet app can be removed from the iPhone's Home Screen and hidden from view, but it can't be entirely deleted, something that will change with the launch of iOS 16.1.

Since iOS 16.1 is not available right now, there is no way to test whether the Wallet app will be able to be deleted, so it's possible Apple could change some things before the update sees a launch later this year.

The Wallet app is a key iPhone app because it houses debit and credit cards for Apple Pay, handles Apple Pay Cash, is the et home of Apple Card, and allows users to store loyalty cards, airline tickets, and more.

It is not clear why Apple would choose to allow users to delete the Wallet app, but the company is facing a class action lawsuit accusing it of violating antitrust law by making Apple Pay the only available mobile wallet for tap-to-pay payments on iPhone.

The iOS 16 update will come out at some point in September, while iOS 16.1 will follow alongside iPadOS 16.1 at a later date. Apple has delayed the launch of iPadOS 16 in order to work on the Stage Manager multitasking feature available to M1 iPads.

And...EU/Brussels will not be satisfied. Will look for next 'issue'...bet very few have thought 'I MUST get rid of that dang Wallet Application to improve my life'.

Not really that useful in the Las Vegas area. But you make a good point. May have to see if I'm missing out on anything, Thanks!
I’m all in on the wallet app. I have my Apple Card stored on there to make purchases for the 3% cash back and zero interest if I decide to buy an apple product and purposely make payments for credit purposes.

My Apple Cash card is on there to send people money like my nephews and nieces for their birthday through iMessage.

Finally my debit card is stored on there because I try to use Apple Pay whenever possible so I don’t have to hand people my actually card to help reduce theft or fraud of my card number

To me, this makes perfect sense because of all the antitrust accusations being leveled against Apple. Like many other Apple apps that don't come pre-installed, simply have them freely downloadable for those that want them.
Yeah! Nerve of Apple 'designing' its own 'System' ! Like buying a car or tv and having to put up with the OEMs design and specs! Intolerable...

Really? What do you use it for on a daily basis?
Daily? Apple Card and all of my Credit Cards and can also be used for travel.....Have used it since its start. Wish it would accept ALL 'Bonus/Customer Discount ' cards so I can delete the app I use for those it doesn't accept. It should also accept Library Cards etc. .....which of corse will probably bring on more complaints.

Apple gearing up for the inevitable government intrusion into its business. There will be third party Wallet apps that a very few loud mouthed complainers will tout. Those who take the bait will get screwed over yet blame Apple when they do. Just take a look in the Apple Card section of the Apple Discussion Forums to see how gullible and ignorant people are about finances and credit cards.
Please keep repeating this!....Remember, if you only stop one person from 'drinking/driving' you've done immeasurable good.

For those times when you enjoy making payments in a slower way.
Really? I find the Apple Card..via the wallet...via my Phone/watch much faster ! But then I also , whenever possible, use self checkout. Also, works at most gas stations I frequent.

Wallet app is all one needs☺️
But I do believe there is a “limit” of sorts associated with it. When I need to make a “big” purchase I take the physical card. Plus it’s a good time to flex the metal😌
"limit"? A close friend literally bought a whole car with Apple Pay.

Then when you download malware, other people can join in on the fun and delete your apps themselves. Good times...
My last phone was an Android for about five years and I never ended up malware once during that time.

People talk about the ability to side load apps on Android, but you have to go into the developer settings and explicitly turn off the safeguards against non-Play Store apps to do so. I don’t see the average Joe ever doing that.

I really don't understand this mentality.

If you buy it it's yours. Companies should not make it damn near impossible for one to modify it as one wishes.

I really dislike many parts of iOS. Especially the SpringBoard (Home screen or Launcher for the Android folk out there). Really wish I could replace it with something more to my liking. And Safari? I don't use it, I use Firefox. But Firefox for iOS uses the same Safari backend (WebKit) and not its own engine (Gecko) because of Apple rules for the App store.

Maybe that is why they are Apple card users?

As of iOS 15, these are the built-in apps that cannot be deleted:
  • App Store
  • Camera
  • Clock
  • Health
  • Messages
  • Phone
  • Photos
  • Safari
  • Settings
  • Wallet
If you ask me, all but App Store, Messages, Phone, and Settings should be deletable, provided that Apple provide a default app framework (currently, only Mail and Safari are, although Safari is oddly not deletable).

Edit: I don't think Apple apps can be deleted anyway. If you attempt to download the deleted app from the App Store, it is installed (restored) immediately.
That will change once DMA comes into effect. Even the Appstore will become delete'able', I guess or they will add an option to install other Appstores.

I don’t see the average Joe ever doing that.
The average Joe, on several platforms, is currently being talked into walking through those exact steps to lower the security of their system by a “helpful” call center representative. The only reason why they’re not being talked through the steps to lower the security on their iPhone is because, without additional hardware, those steps don’t exist.

They could make the Delete AppStore app available in countries that, due to legal requirements, they have to remove access to the AppStore for. :) If there’s no AppStore, then there’s no anti-competition, there’s NO competition. I’m sure EU developers will be able to make the same money on non-iOS platforms (they won’t).

Respectfully, I think that’s splitting hairs a little bit. By that logic people shouldn’t use Windows or macOS, because the aforementioned scenario could happen on both of those too.

No, it’s not saying that people SHOULDN’T use them, people should use whatever they like however they like. However, people SHOULD understand that, because of the ease of lowering the security on non-iOS devices, they are required to be more careful and more vigilant.
