"limit"? A close friend literally bought a whole car with Apple Pay.
Apologies, I think limit is the wrong word.
AMEX called me when I spent $4000 on a purchase as they were worried about security - as I used ApplePay to make the purchase (they didn't verbalize this, but it's the only thing I can surmise, as I have made far greater purchases with the physical card and never had a security call).

I have bought an actual car with the physical card, and AMEX didnt consider that a security threat.

It will be easier for Apple to update the app without relying on the full iOS update.

Oh I don’t think Apple will change that anyway. They’ve made other stock apps deletable before and it still requires a full software update every time they make changes to one or more of those apps. They simply refuse to allow to individually update any of their stock apps, deletable or not.

I never have to use wallet anymore since my chairman card now has tap to pay

If you think tap to pay with your card is the exact same as using apple pay with your iphone then you clearly have no idea about the added security you get using Apple Pay. It’s definitely NOT the same in terms of security.

I use the app. So I'm keeping it.

Glad to see that they give folks the option to remove it. Wish that this was the default for all apps. If someone uses Chrome instead of Safari on iOS then they should be able to uninstall Safari as they wish as WebKit (which all browsers on iOS are required to use) is built into the OS and does not require the physical Safari app to work.

Even more so now that Apple is going to stop requiring the use of webkit for all browsers

Yes I know…. I said I use apply pay.

You open your cards by double tapping the lock button. You don’t need to open the wallet app at all.

What do you think you’re opening when you double tap the lock button to access your cards? I’ll give you one guess….

iPhones have NFC devices on them, meaning that you can use them to pay for your stuff at stores, gas stations, restaurants, and many other shops.

It's very convienient to leave your wallet at home when you're going out to Kroger and just bring your phone with you to pay.
Kroger? you just happened to use as an example one place where Apple Pay isn’t accepted and you can’t leave your wallet at home if you go there to shop.

Really? What do you use it for on a daily basis?
For me it’s one of the most convenient apps. Besides airplane tickets and credit cards, it also keeps my store fidelity cards. They pop up automatically as soon as I enter a physical store (created with Pass2U).

So it essentially replaces my wallet, except for my ID and drivers license.

This has to be some trolling or something, why would you delete it when no other wallet app is allowed to access the NFC chip 🤣

Well, over at 9to5mac -where they first discovered this- they think making wallet deletable may be a sign of Apple planning to open up access to the NFC chip.

The Antitrust scrutiny is due to their locking of the NFC chip in the iPhone so it can only be used with Apple Pay, this doesn't solve that.

But this may be a sign that Apple plans to unlock the NFC chip. Why else would they make wallet deletable?

What do you think you’re opening when you double tap the lock button to access your cards? I’ll give you one guess….

Even so what’s the point of the actual app/icon… there is zero functionality in there that is not accessible another way. It could literally just be hidden.

Hence when I say app I’m talking about it showing up as an app in the App Library or Home Screen.

Kroger? you just happened to use as an example one place where Apple Pay isn’t accepted and you can’t leave your wallet at home if you go there to shop.
I never go to Kroger. It was just the first name that came on top of my head for a food shopping center since I got one down the road.

The built-in iPhone Wallet app will apparently be able to be deleted starting in iOS 16.1, according to code in today's iPadOS 16.1 beta that was found by 9to5Mac and confirmed by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser.

The code suggests the Wallet app will be downloadable from the App Store if it has been removed from an iPhone and the person with the iPhone attempts to use a feature like Apple Pay.

As of right now, the Wallet app can be removed from the iPhone's Home Screen and hidden from view, but it can't be entirely deleted, something that will change with the launch of iOS 16.1.

Since iOS 16.1 is not available right now, there is no way to test whether the Wallet app will be able to be deleted, so it's possible Apple could change some things before the update sees a launch later this year.

The Wallet app is a key iPhone app because it houses debit and credit cards for Apple Pay, handles Apple Pay Cash, is the home of Apple Card, and allows users to store loyalty cards, airline tickets, and more.

It is not clear why Apple would choose to allow users to delete the Wallet app, but the company is facing a class action lawsuit accusing it of violating antitrust law by making Apple Pay the only available mobile wallet for tap-to-pay payments on iPhone.

The iOS 16 update will come out at some point in September, while iOS 16.1 will follow alongside iPadOS 16.1 at a later date. Apple has delayed the launch of iPadOS 16 in order to work on the Stage Manager multitasking feature available to M1 iPads.

lol thats what u call "CODE" is localization Strings nothing else.

I like that the option is there but it's not something I'll be making use of!

Wallet is my main way of paying for things now. Only time I don't use it is if I can't and that's if an online site doesn't accept Apple Pay as a payment method or if I'm spending over £100 contactless which is rare.

And of course it keeps a record of my covid vaccines! My cinema and concert tickets are in there too.

I ain't deleting it :)

It should be possible to delete any app on iOS or Android. The excuse always is that some apps are "deeply" intergrated into the system, but that was a choice by Apple and Google. It should be possible to design a system in a way that no app is so deeply intergrated that you can't delete it.

On some Android phones it is not even possible to delete the Facebook app. Facebook pays some phone manufactureres a lot of money and in return they install a very hard to delete background app by Facebook that will reinstall the Facebook app once you delete it. Such a behaviour should be stopped by the authorities. You paid a lot of money for a phone and therefore it should not come with bloatware.

The wallet app is a good example of apps that I would probably never use. So it just users storage space that I could use for porn instead.

I never really found this wallet app useful for myself. It's just there.
How? I use this everyday, and it’s connected to the Apple Card, and I use Apple Pay for purchases made on my phone, tickets, yearly passes, all your cashback goes into the apple cash card. I mean, if you have an Iphone, the wallet is essential, what else are you using?

I'm pretty sad about this. Don't get me wrong I understand people like chioce, but tbh with the way things are going, I'm worried we are entering the era where your bank app has the pop up "To use your card with your phone, download XWalletApp here" ...

One of the big things millennial and younger generations say to defend the internet and tech is that it makes things easier, and I being a borderline genz/millennial, have to say I'm not sure I agree with that. Just the other day my mom was using the youtube app and tried opening a link and youtube asked if she wanted to open it in chorme or the default browsers and she didn't know what to do. Next we'll all be explaining to our parents/grandparents to use this bank card open this wallet app, to use your credit card 1 use this app. Your cc 2 3 and 4 can all be use with this app. But this card you'll need this other wallet app for. And so on...

I really don't understand this mentality.

If you buy it it's yours. Companies should not make it damn near impossible for one to modify it as one wishes.

I really dislike many parts of iOS. Especially the SpringBoard (Home screen or Launcher for the Android folk out there). Really wish I could replace it with something more to my liking. And Safari? I don't use it, I use Firefox. But Firefox for iOS uses the same Safari backend (WebKit) and not its own engine (Gecko) because of Apple rules for the App store.
I agree with the mentality. Apples designing its own system. Use the other options available. It’s not nearly impossible to modify your device as you see fit. You just want to put the risk back on Apple if it doesn’t work out. The EU likes to legislate product and business decisions that go way beyond their mandate. You can install whatever you want on your devices but Apple is just not going to support it.
