You know who is going to be really pissed? Bank robbers. Now in the middle of a heist, if their getaway driver calls, the bank robber will have to take off his ski mask to answer his phone and well, then everyone will know who he is! ;)
hey wait, you don't need to unlock an iPhone to accept a phone call.. so in this scenario, the bank robber will remain concealed

:p

but you are saying its a lie.

" the million to one is not fact, but i don't think they are lying"

It's a sales pitch and a estimation by people who'd job it is to make you wish to pay them $1000 for a product.
Many security systems are going to have weak points, and those will generally only be known by the creators.

Optimistic estimation rather than fact.

Come on, you are a intelligent adult.
So they ran the numbers, and the exact results came back at dead on 1 million to one.

Not 875,221 - 1 or 912,972 - 1 or 1,132,000 - 1

but 1,000,000-1

It looked good on screen, a BIG whole number, and is a estimation in a sales pitch.
I can accept that.

That's never going to happen. Apple is moving forward and even said Face ID is the future. I wish they would do both but the more I think about it the more redundant that would be. And besides these phones are expensive enough.
Problem is you think TouchId under the screen is a thing. Apple and Samsung failed at trying to bring it into the world. It does not exist and the people that tried to make it exist have moved on to other solutions.

Anyway, it's funny to see Apple in full-on PR damage control mode.

I don't think you understand What damage control is. What better way to market your product then to answer more in depth questions about this new technology that no one has complete hands on experience with. I commend Apple for discussing this technology and it's capabilities. Apple understands a lot of us have questions and it's appreciated they are addressing them.

Oh I'd never be so bold as to suggest mankind cannot solve technical issues such as this and develop working methods.
Just because it may not be perfected for mass production today, I'd never rule anything out in the future.

I never said it was a thing? I said I wish they could have done both but they can't. And I stated Apple says the future is Face ID.

I can see them adding a second face in the future.
Husband and wife type of scenario.

No reason why not, so I could imagine this happening.

Too many conditions for FaceID. Its not better than just touching your phone with a finger.

Please remember, Apple are wishing to sell you this years model NOW.
They will of course say the item they want you to buy today is what they are offering you today.

They made a joke about LARGE screens you can't reach with one hand, and even made a video to prove their point.
As that year, the model they were selling only had that size screen.

Move on a year, and that was forgotten, as they then had a BIG screen, THEN they told you the BIG screen was the future.

It's Sales !
What do you expect a company to say?

You can make the argument "never say never" but it might not be feasible when alternative things have been put in place and served their purpose thus rendering the original problem redundant.

As I said, and I'm sure most rational people will agree.
Any normal person can see BOTH methods have their advantages and disadvantages depending on the scenario.

Having both options would be the ideal. Unfortunately Apple are unable to offer both options yet, so they are doing the hard sell on the option they WERE able to offer this year.

As for the future. We shall see.

But Face ID will never be as good at touch ID in all scenarios.
As people have already said, now they put their hand in their pocket and the phone it being unlocked as they are taking it out. Angles the phone may be at, etc, etc.

Face ID can not make Touch ID Redundant. It's an alternative that may be better in some scenarios, and will without question be worse in other scenarios.

Believe me I thought so too, Touch ID next year would be a no brainer. But the more I think about it the more I begin to realize that ship has sailed. For plenty of reasons too.

We'll see in a few years :)

Apple know their job is to sell this phone to us NOW using whatever means possible.

They also know what they next Model will probably be line, and have a bit of a idea about the model after that.
We need to wait a year for we find out :)

It's still amazing if you took a Tablet or Smart phone from today back say 30 or 40 years.
They would be saying it was impossible. But here we are today :)

I would love to think in the next 30 - 40 years we shall have just as impossible things in our possession.

I think people need to give it a rest, just wait until the phone is out and see how it works......

I'm sure it will be able to deal with my face just fine :)

And me that works heavily protected with PPE that I find it difficult to remove the protective gloves to do Touch ID, would really appreciate just raising he the phone and it authenticates me. Different situations, different needs.

Agreed.
BOTH methods have their pro's and con's depending on you, your dress, and the scenario you are in.
Hence just generally saying, we really should all be in agreement that, it would be good, for everyone if, at some future point Apple can offer both forms of security. :)

Isn't Face ID the thing that failed when Apple first demonstrated it to the world? Oh yeah and wasn't Craig Federighi the one holding it in his hand when it failed? I say give it a year or two and let them work the kinks out of it. By iPhone 11 or 12, it should be decent. Anytime you buy a first generation feature, it will fail and there will be bugs. And at the price of a down payment on a car or perhaps a new laptop, it had better work perfectly every time.
Again, try reading the article
I'm waiting for the interview about why they decided to put a notch at top instead of everything flush. It is just jarring to see safari in landscape with a section of the page (which is most likely empty space) missing. Or the Mail app, photos, settings....just a lot of scenarios where it would bother me. I'm not in the market for a new phone (at least my wife thinks I'm not), but the 10 isn't it for me. If it was just a black bar at the top to make things flush, sign me up. Everyone have a great weekend!
At least we managed to make it to post #73 before somebody started squealing about "the notch"

"Additionally, if you haven't entered a passcode for 6.5 days and Face ID hasn't been used in the last four hours, Face ID will also be disabled until a passcode is entered."

Huh? So it won't work after waking up then because it hasn't been used in the last four hours?

More people in my opinion in the US (not sure about international) use gloves and have wet or dirty hands more often than wearing face-covering costumes or helmets.
You still need to remove your gloves or dry your hands if you want to do anything productive(typing a message, email, etc) after unlocking the phone though.
