In the past I always wanted the latest iPhone, as did many, hence the massive growth in Apple's sales, I don't know anyone (personally) who is actually that excited by these new offerings. It may be different outside my friend/family/colleague bubble of course.

We also need to consider that almost everyone in the markets where people can afford a smartphone already has one, so there is a market saturation. The other big markets (India, China, South America) will not so easily get swiped away by Apple due to the super high prices. So at some point Apple may need to address this if they want to expand further.

So true. I've asked people here what they think it will happen when the device goes in full screen for video/photos, before the keynote. Will the notch get in the way ? Cause it looked like it. Got the usual answers; "Apple will surely figure this out". Well, I guess they didn't.

yea, as i wondered on the other thread,
when videos are in the Iphone's native ratio full screen, we HAVE to watch them with the notch.
no other way around it.
so what's the point of a full screen when you have that thing stuck on the left?
at least with an 8+ you can actually watch full screen properly.

I just tried to quickly (and rather roughly!) mock up what I'd imagined, not particularly slick but this is what I thought Apple might do, leaving permanent black bars at the top and bottom that could still be used as real estate for status bars and a dock or something at the bottom (for balance) and have video/game content just fill the main section. Would still be bigger screened than iPhone 8 but less "odd" than the X. Then again I'd imagined they'd manage to reduce the notch a little too of course, given that the competition cram a fair amount into a smaller space.

nice mock ;)
the problem with this is that it's still at least half of the bezel the + models have now, so the phone will be almost as the + model height.. so i imagine they wanted to get rid of the bezels and not shortening them.
your version could have been ok if they planned to stop making the "Regular 8 and 8+" altogether.

well.. i guess most people will learn to live with the notch concealing their fullscreen movies :p

Yeah, that's what I meant about Apple having the notch section smaller in the first place, like with the Galaxy S8. Being the size it is makes it less appealing the way I'd imagined it!

For videos, you can double tap the screen to zoom out a bit to get rid of the notch.

If it does, then they could drop the Face ID altogether, but it is a big “if”. Why would we need both Touch & Face ID on one device?

Either way, it just doesn’t feel like Apple to include multiple ways of unlocking your device. That’s what separates them from the rest of the competition.

I don’t think Apple invested all these resources into an over-engineered face recognition system just to serve as a one-off way of unlocking your phone. It likely factors into their long term product roadmap somehow (probably AR, amongst other things).

I suspect the days of Touch ID as we know it are numbered.

yea, but when you zoom out a bit the avoid the notch, you significantly reduce the size of the video..
not only that, it's also a wasted fullscreen real estate we supposed to have in the first place (at least for the price...).. all for the notch.
so people that are bothered by this simply have to buy the 8+, and cannot enjoy the new technology of the X.
and i bet many people will feel the notch is blocking the enjoyment from the video.

Verry nice. So it is possible ;) Can you maybe join Apple in the decision boardroom?

But I wonder how it would work in an environment where you have the phone on its back, face up.

Would the phone be scanning peoples faces and after a certain number of failed attempts, forces you input a pass key?

With touchid, the phone would have to be physically touched.

If the phone is in sleep mode it isn’t scanning for faces. Just like Touch ID isn’t scanning for fingers when the phone is asleep.

My prediction: iMac pro will have FaceID as well.
After the way Craig mocked “security over USB”, there’s no way they will put TouchID in an external keyboard. It will have to be a closed system which is a part of the computer itself, directly connected to the secure enclave.

True. That is one scenario which will have to be tested extensively once the phone is released. After all, that was the very reason given the for the iPhone X demo evidently "failing" on stage.

My guess is that some algorithm could be created so that it only scans faces which are looking directly at it, and disregards people who look at it from any other angle?

This is only V1.0. As Apple gathers more usage data, they should be able to refine the technology. Touch ID itself isn't perfectly by any means, as anyone who has tried to unlock their phone with damp hands can tell you.

It failed on stage because it scanned people’s faces who where handling the phone prior. It only scans for faces when the phone is awake, meaning when the screen is on.

Actually no, as widely reported « when using the camera, watching videos, looking at photos, or playing games — and iOS 11 hides the notch with black bars by default in those use cases.»

Every pic I've seen, and the at the presentation itself, the notch was in full view...

You can almost see her wistfully thinking; "I'm worried about that flying black monolith over there, If I pretend I haven't seen it and look away, maybe it'll just go...".

I just had a look around and apparently you can shrink it on video, but not on photos, for web browsing you get WHITE bars at the sides which looks ridiculous, just make them black! There are some really odd design choices going on at Apple of late.

you can avoid the notch and have black bars ONLY if you zoom out the video and have it considerably smaller, with additional black bars on top and bottom. no other way whatsoever.
which misses the whole point of having a big juicy screen you can fully enjoy.
that wonder woman shot above proves that. it DOES look like a monolith in the shot, lol.

Same here. I use my phone while it is lying on the table or on my work desk (and thus not even close to being tilted towards my face) all the time. It is usually also located way to the right of my main computer screen. Which is why I have both my thumb and index finger registered to unlock.
Sometimes technology leaves people behind. This poor woman couldn't use TouchID because her fingers are wet. She had to suffer through entering her passcode manually. Now she is able to use Face ID, but you with your phone off to the side and your attention directed at another screen are forced to briefly pick up the phone to tilt it towards you. I don't know who to feel more sorry for.

Agreed. Ideally I'd have like for them to wait and place it at the front of the phone. Do it right. The S8 solution I'm not a fan of

My guess is it simply can't be done (at least without serious and unacceptable compromises). And, being a rumor, may have never been under consideration.

The thing is that Face ID DID work. Others used the phone so it locked up. All good.
From the article:
"Federighi said he was shocked when it happened because the feature normally "just works."

Why would Federighi say that if it actually DID work?

Given the choice of the notch of the iPhone X or the chin of the Sharp Aquos Crystal (which was my daily driver for 2 years), I'll take (it on) the chin. :)

I always liked that Sharp Aquos, not perfect but they made it look pretty great compared to most at the time and using the screen as the speaker, while again not perfect, at least showed ingenuity. It's a shame it was a little hamstrung by middle of the road hardware.

I thought it was terrific. Only a killer deal on an iPhone SE was able to pull me away from it. Should Sharp produce a follow-up to it, I'll be back. :)
