A flatness tolerance of 0.4mm ( sounds less if you put it in microns) for an external aesthetic surface seems very high. It’s harder to make surfaces flat as a curve has more ridgidity . So is it plus or minus 0.4 mm or 0.2 mm either side of perfectly flat?

What is the issue here? The Pro already doesn’t lie even close to flat because of the enormous camera bump. And the iPad in that photo can hardly be classified as “bent;” it deviates from perfectly level by what appears to be the thickness of 4 sheets of paper, which is exactly the tolerance Riccio states.

The “bend” doesn’t affect any of the functionality of the iPad, and is entirely unnoticeable unless you’re looking for it. And if it really bothers you, return it! Or exchange it for another one!

okayyy

If you had a bend in your iPad and you were trying to sell it - would it affect the resale value? Would that make a difference to you?

If you found a bend in your iPad and you took it back to the Applestore and they said it was your fault and that they wouldn't replace it - would that make a difference to you?

Arrogant or not, bring Forstall back! I miss the conflict at the executive level that resulted in better products to all of us.

In this case "Arrogance" means fighting for what Apple used to stand for. He fought for what Jobs taught him was important. THAT is why he got fired.

Now Cook, Ive, and Ferengi ( PROFIT!! ) can make garbage computers, pre-bent iPads, gold watch bands, emojis, and charge $1600 for phones that people won't buy. Without the burden of giving a damn about those pesky customers who keep messing up their fun.

Forstall is Apple's last best chance to return to Apple "core" ( sorry ) values. And there is 0.00% they will bring him back.

I ordered my car from Toyota waited 3 months for delivery from Japan to the US, it can only be delivered by specific drivers to the dealer who are certified, etc, etc. Guess what a) it didn't come with any dings, dents or scratches on it and b) I would NOT have accepted it with any dings, dents or scratches on it. This despite due to the its size they have remove the power mirrors off of it so they can get fit them onto the cargo ship. No I spent a lot of money on my vehicle and in the wold of SmartPHones and Tablets, Apple is the same thing. Demanding high dollar for what you get, then I expect to get a tablet, phone, etc without known defects, issues or design problems you found before you shipped and now want to ignore those issues. I am fortunate that my Vehicle and my iPad Prod 3rd Gen all arrive safely, but clearly some did not. Apple can exchange them, and sell them as Refurbs.

All this talk about microns - talk about swallowing the Kook Aid! If you have a bent iPad you would only notice it if it was beyond that tolerance. This is 'AppleSpeak' and you're swallowing it. The pictures and reports of bent iPads are showing devices that are clearly defective regardless of how Apple executives or spokespeople are representing the issue.

I'm 100% certain your Toyota has significant panel gaps, orange-peel and swirl marks on the paint, and it could even be substantially damaged in shipping, repaired in port, and never disclosed to you the eventual buyer.

And in the other hand who is outraged? It’s the opposite of the apple fans, who will be busy finding any issue no matter how slight.

Apple fans dropping $2k are outraged . Non Apple fans probably thought this was an onion Article and are still in shock, and most people (Apple/non apple) are laughing at the people trying their hardest to defend this..... yes the day has come where some will defend even an obvious Flaw such as very obvious bent new device .

Big difference between outraged and laughing . About $2K invested :p

No, not at all. I’m trying to bring some actual common sense and logic to a forum full of hyberbole driven over dramatic tech fans. There’s a lot of good conversations to be had in these forums, but weeding out those from the sensationalist nonsense can be difficult.
No, just no. Apple themselves have made a statement saying the bent ipads are fine. No hyperbole here just facts coming directly from Apple. It's up to the consumer to decide if they will fork out money for said product. It looks like most people will not pay Apples premium prices for a product that's bent going by the responses on the couple of threads on this topic.

Apple was quiet on the issue until this week, when the company told The Verge that the bending is a side effect of the manufacturing process and not a defect that impacts iPad performance.

The bend is said to be the result of a cooling process involving the iPad Pro's metal and plastic components during manufacturing. iPad Pro models experiencing this issue are exhibiting the problem right out of the box, according to Apple, so it's not an issue that shows up or worsens over time.

Apple told The Verge that concerns over the structural rigidity of the iPad Pro are unfounded and that it stands by the product.

Just like they stood by their iPhones 6-8 with the microphone/speaker module, that lead to motherboard failures - from bending!

How is Apple sure the bend won't worsen over time, when they can't manufacture it under controlled conditions all flat as they should be?

How much is a motherboard replacement cost of the 2018 iPad Pro, both sizes?

The problem is not just the bending issue. The main problem is they were balantly lying to our face. They are dissing us and degrading their customers to make them feel incompetent.
I need to call axel foley (turns on beverly hill cop theme)
They need to be investigated.

And your iPad could be assembled from return units ...... but we are talking about the Toyota being sold with a bent pannels here ;)

No, we are talking about manufacturing tolerances. You can decide if a particular defect is something you can live with or not. But don't act like your Toyota is defect free. Most people don't even know what to look at when they take delivery of a vehicle costing 30 or 50x more than their iPad.

When they say over time, they mean the 14 return period . Day 15 is your problem..... ;) so trust them for 14 days ....

Apple has admitted it ships bent iPads.

Post a link.

Dan Ricio has said that the flatness spec is 400 microns, tighter than for previous generations, and that iPads meet that spec. That is not an admission that they ship "bent" iPads, it's an admission that the iPad spec is flatter than ever.

Are they actually using the strong aluminium or the weaker one like in iPhone 6?
What do you think? Seriously... we’ve to deal with Saint Cook. Do you really think Saint Cook will use the more expensive aluminum on his premium priced iPad ‘Pros’?

Let’s keep within the goal posts here . Are you saying a Toyota will sell you a car with a bend chassis ?

We are not playing spot defects the average consumer will miss - cause you would need to be blind to not notice some of these iPads .... judging by the pics

Sorry Apple, due to this I'm not going to buy it anymore.
I was fighting with myself yes/no/yes/no/yes, and this helped me out...
A big "NO" to iPad Pro!

I need to find a way to get completely away from Apple.

This photo is apt for this article because the article did not claim that the iPad is out of the box
The article is about iPads bending, before any use, by up to a tolerance of 400 microns (0.4 mm), which Apple claims is expected due to the manufacturing process and a lower tolerance than previous iPad Pro models. The pictured iPad is bent by comfortably more than 400 microns and the bending, by what I can gather from the original post (which I provided a link to), happened after it was taken out of the box by being placed in a backpack with no case.

The dude is "VP of Hardware Engineering." I'd be more surprised if he responded with, "Ooops, we did it again."

He's not going to admit fault for it. Doing so would admit that he and/or his team screwed up, and most people in positions like his rarely do so, if ever.

Anyway, keep an eye on Apple staff announcements if you can. If we suddenly see that Dan Riccio has decided to retire to "spend more time with his family," or he has resigned for other reasons, then we can have a pretty good guess as to why.

Toyota has sold millions of vehicles where they failed to properly rust-proof the chassis which sometimes resulted in the entire vehicle breaking in half...But yeah, your slightly less than razor-flat iPad that you're probably going to put in a plastic case worth about $2. That's something to be seriously upset about.

The thing that makes it worse is that they are defending this. Admit it’s wrong and fix the issue. I was going to buy one but will stick with my original iPad Pro for now.
