Apple’s financial boom came when the company’s focus changed from tools to consumer playthings. First the iPod. Followed by the iPhone. The iPad. The TV. The watch.

Cook is fortunate that his products don’t have to push any envelopes. They are fashion and entertainment products.
No, the financial boom came this year under Cook's leadership for the past 6 years.

The value of Apple means nothing except to shareholders and executive management. To the consumer, value means the innovation and reliability of the products they buy. Once that goes away, the value that the shareholders and executive management care so much about goes with it.
The consumers have been buying Apple products more than ever, or at least at a consistently much higher rate than the Jobs era.

Luckily, with AAPL, what goes down must come up and break newer barriers;):):apple:, we just have to play long.

Told to ignore daily fluctuations by the investment gurus, now we have to see a 7+ week fluctuation as something we have to ignore unless we are day-traders:(.

I don't need new barriers. Many times stocks will never reach their all time high again for a very long time. I would love to see $225 sometime in my lifetime.

Anyway i am just rambling. Apple with this statement is seemingly questioning the intelligence of their customers. So i hope they continue to be punished and shareholders begin to look for some heads. There are simply too many failures and excuses and product delays right now. Some if the news moving the stock is out of their control and it is what it is. However the little things like this they can control and I don't feel like they are making appropriate responses to their consumers recently.

I only own shares because it impresses the chicks and that effect is wearing off lately. Some guy at the bar sitting next to me had Tesla and Amazon. I went home alone that night. I could use a hug.

This is Apple's most expensive iPad ever. And for them to blow off their loyal customer with ridiculous statements such as this is acceptable and well within tolerances is unacceptable.

Honestly, if I was mad as you are on this forum, I would not simply not buy Apple products and take my business elsewhere, that is the only way you will prove your point to Apple that you are no longer being loyal to them, by supporting another tech manufacturer. You can complain all you want on here, it’s not going to make you feel any better, and you’re certainly not proving anything to Apple either on Macrumors, but you can do so by spending your money on products that are not Apple related, maybe that will bring more enjoyment and less stress that you’re currently exhibiting on this thread. Good luck. But I myself, have no negative experiences with them, and I will continue to support Apple. That’s the difference between me and you, our prerogatives and viewpoints differ.

Earlier this week, Apple told The Verge that some 2018 iPad Pro models are shipping with a slight bend in the aluminum chassis, which is a side effect of the manufacturing process that is not expected to worsen over time or negatively impact the iPad's performance.

Many MacRumors readers were concerned about Apple's position that a noticeable bend is not a manufacturing issue, prompting MacRumors reader Craig to send an email to Apple CEO Tim Cook to express his concerns.

While Cook didn't respond, Craig did get a reply from Apple's VP of hardware engineering, Dan Riccio, which he shared with MacRumors and we which we have confirmed to be from Apple's corporate mail servers in Cupertino, California.

In the email, Riccio says that the iPad Pro's design "meets or exceeds" all of Apple's quality and precision standards.

Apple's specification for iPad Pro flatness is up to 400 microns, which is "even tighter than previous generations." Riccio reiterates that this level of flatness won't change during normal use, nor does it affect function. From the email:
Riccio's email also says that a company statement was not included in the original information disseminated by The Verge, and that Apple will be reaching out to media outlets to comment officially.

The original email was sent late on December 20 and suggested a comment would come "later today," but that didn't happen, so it's not quite clear when Apple will provide more info to the media. We may be hearing an official, more reassuring statement on the 2018 iPad Pro before the end of the day.

Minor bending of the new iPad Pro models first came to light shortly after the devices launched, and new iPad Pro owners who noticed bends shared their concerns on the MacRumors forums.

Apple was quiet on the issue until this week, when the company told The Verge that the bending is a side effect of the manufacturing process and not a defect that impacts iPad performance.

The bend is said to be the result of a cooling process involving the iPad Pro's metal and plastic components during manufacturing. iPad Pro models experiencing this issue are exhibiting the problem right out of the box, according to Apple, so it's not an issue that shows up or worsens over time.

Apple told The Verge that concerns over the structural rigidity of the iPad Pro are unfounded and that it stands by the product.

Article Link: Apple's Dan Riccio Says 2018 iPad Pro 'Meets or Exceeds' Quality Standards of Design and Precision, More Info to Come

It does not matter to me what causes the bend because any bend is unacceptable.

Every product is going to have bends, but is it beyond typical tolerance levels? We need some independent tests, especially compared to previous models and other products, including from other manufacturers.

Independent as in independent medical examiners??? Yeah right.

What about standards of structural integrity?

What about the impact on the logic board and battery over time?

Riccio says that the iPad Pro's design "meets or exceeds" And your is point is?????? So if your standards were that they don't HAVE to work that would make it right? OMG! Selling my 2 shares of stock soon as I can, and trying to find a way out of this Apple eco-system! ???????

Tell you what it doesn’t ‘meet or exceed’... people’s expectations!

If it "meets or exceeds" Apple's quality standards, then Apple's quality standards do not meet or exceed mine.

Exactly.

If this is the standard for Apple products, I won’t be purchasing any more of them.

Imagine doing anything as laborious and time consuming as attaching a phone or tablet to a cable attached to a laptop :)

Compared to just dragging those files to Dropbox and letting the internet do its stuff? Yeah, once you get used to conveniences like this, even getting up to retrieve your iPad and lightning cable from the adjacent room feels like too much work.

Even airdrop feels faster than connecting and disconnecting a cable and going through iTunes.

The only times I plugged in my iOS devices was to do device backups prior to upgrading them.

You mean after Cook set an arbitrary deadline, rushed Maps out the door in Alpha form and then threw Forstall under the bus didn't you?

In fairness to Apple and Forstall Siri is only a retard because she doesn't mine your entire house and use that data to learn.

I don’t think bent device was the issue. It was apple balantly lying to people in front of their face was causing this lashback. The fact apple insulted customers’ intelligence is pretty insulting.

What exactly did Apple lie about?

It’s already been established that no official statement was ever issued to Theverge and they were pretty much just running with their own narrative and framing, possibly to paint Apple in the stupidest light possible.

All this backlash has been pretty much over what Theverge claims Apple said, not what Apple actually said. And as far as I can see, the official statement from Apple is nothing at all like what was reported by Theverge. They have never outright said that bent iPads was fine, much less suggested that iPads bent to the extent as shown in the headline photos were perfectly acceptable.

What I am seeing here is a website using a sensationalist title designed to elicit outrage in order to draw the clicks, and a ton of haters being played for fools.

And now that the matter has been clarified, instead of admitting that they were mistaken the first time round (because again, what Theverge reported was their own context, not based on some official quote or statement), these people have instead chosen to double down on the initial misunderstanding and perpetuate the outrage.

And just because I have the temerity to *gasp* “think different” and say something in defence of Apple and refuse to partake in this madness, that somehow makes me the paid Apple shill?

You are all your worst enemies here.

This is the thing apple has not released any official statement. Any media site can say apple said this or that.

What apple really need to do is come out with an official statement to what they were supposed to have said.

This thread (including the title) is about the official statement Dan Riccio gave. It seems this official statement only adds to more confusion instead of giving clarity. That is one of the reasons there are (until now) 28 pages of bickering. If Apple would have said 'We are looking into it.' it would have been a completely different kind of bickering o_O.

I guess the photos were photoshopped then. Sigh...yup

Apple...unapologetic company

Rico didn’t even deny verge claim.

I don’t deny that there are iPads bent to that extent. However, Apple isn’t saying that is acceptable. They even went so far as to quantify their level of acceptance, and those iPads clearly exceed those tolerances.

There are now a couple of separate issues being conflated together. iPads which might be ever so slightly bent in line with Apple’s own quality assurance standards, and iPads which seemingly getting bent quite easily (which is a separate matter and best handled via Apple’s own customer support channels).

Apple has said they will issue a press statement. The common-sense thing to do would be to call a time-out with regards to the comments section, wait for Apple’s official response, and see how things evolve from there.

Then it wait and see for press release.

If they had the ability to make it better. Why not allow Siri to mine like Google and Alexa? Make it opt-in (off by default). Would be better than no data.

So he’s saying a big bend is within their design and production tolerances? That’s even worse.
That means it’s a design defect.

It is clear from the photos that these out-of-the-box bowed iPad Pros are like nothing seen before. Apple even admits that some are coming out of manufacturing in a bowed condition.

Apple's Dan Riccio's statement doesn't directly address the issue. He is talking about the standards and tolerances but NOT saying that those bowed iPad Pros are within those standards. He is leaving the connecting of dots as an exercise for the reader.
Yes—it’s slight of hand (rhetorical). Just like Jaws’ response re: XR sales concerns.

Because they will avoid subsequent government inquiries and in the future tax proposals in places like the EU that will tax data collected on it's users in a similar way to revenue. Google and Facebook have some tumultuous times ahead. In this regard Apple is behind the curve but has actually maintained the moral high ground. It is one of the few reasons i have faith in Apple for doing the right thing.

I think it is exactly the opposite. A bent iPad that doesn't fit in Mr. Riccio's tolerance. Mr. Riccio claims 400 microns max (hard to be detected) but Apple ships iPads bent beyond that statement. Claiming at the same time that it's perfectly normal.

Try reading the article again.

Well, you’re not. And it’s well known that Apple reads these forums.

I'm not sure you could pay someone enough to read through all this garbage.

But 99% of this forum is pointless complaining. How can they get useful information from so much noise?

I've opened tickets on Apple's dev site and referenced Macrumors thread discussing the issue. This is the best mac community I know of, yes there is a lot of criticism and it sometimes gets silly, but there is A TON of useful discussions and insight as well.
