It's almost like Apple is saying that this is no longer a traditional tablet, it's a computer, not designed to be used as a tablet anymore but something to sit on your desk as if it was a computer, hence it won't take the abuse previous generations will.

Attempting to force a round peg in a square hole?

They’ve been pushing for people to think of the iPads as their primary computer, and some agree with Apple.

While I agree with a lot of your posts here, I am not sure if I understand your comments about the build quality -except if you’re taking about their laptops- which are fragile in some ways too.

I just mean that up until now the iPad has been a hardy unit, and it should be, it's a portable device that people take everywhere, throw it in a bag and in general don't worry about it coping with what's thrown at it.

Now it is so much thinner, lighter and no longer appears hardy.

Hence it just seems like Apple no longer see it as a device to do what you used to, more something to sit on your desk, it's not built for being a tablet that needs to be able to take a few knocks in its life.

You are being facetious. I don’t understand why taking words in people’s replies, completely out of context , helps with discussions on MR.

Unless you honestly believe in the idea that hardware Or software can in fact be flawless.....
This reply doesn’t address the overall topic and doesn’t help with any clarity at all and this is now officially called “bickering”.

I haven't found my new iPad Pro any less durable than my 10.5. It travels with me every day to work in a backpack, without any sort of special treatment or anything. No issues at all.

I suppose since I’ve used Apple desktops exclusively and they’ve been built like tanks, the wording confused me, I get what you mean though.

@DNichter glad yours is fine.

As always, mileage varies. Certainly not saying it is a bad device, but I disagree that it is equally durable when compared to the 10.5. Time will tell. Aside from anything else, there is really nothing the new iPad Pro can do for me that the 10.5 won't, I returned the new one and will stick with the 10.5.

Your conclusion definers the outcome of your analysis. Since this fully supports your prior conclusion ... well, you connect the dots.
Have a Happy Holiday.
...and the same could not be said of you?

Tell me another one, Daddy!

My error. I hadn't read your post correctly.
No problem. Of course, I have never myself been guilty of such a mistake...

Riiiiight. ;-)

That's "bended"? ("Bent")

Personally, I would vote "no"; unless that bend is:

1. Directly that way out of the box.

2. A LOT worse than it appears in the basically-worthless photo.

As some components , new cost more , others are cheaper . It balances .

Apple should increase slowly, just not to this extend . There is sentiment as some cannot afford new iPhones now.

Apple requested a size, did not invent OLED.
So HOW do you know that?

Were you in on the product design meetings?

Are you on any Apple product design teams or privy to their internal deliberations?

Thought not.

We do not have to be in any design team or meetings to see a bad design.
LAtely, almost all Apple product designs has major design problems, Not just the bending on the iPad Pros, from Macbook pro, new Mac Minis, old Apple pencil one that it had the charger in the top part of the pencil.

Apple design is not what it used to be. There lack of innovation and common sense has been gone with Jobs.

You are just trying to make lame excuses for poor design.
Arrogance through design with complete disregard for consumer needs.

Nothing wrong with your choice, of course. I loved the 10.5. I just haven’t experienced anything that would say yes 11 is any less durable than my 10.5 was. Yea functionality wise, not much different, but I’ve I am really liking the new design and aspect ratio.

It's ahead of its time, a bit like the Google PixelBook, incredible performance, but nothing really out there to actually make use of it.

As developers release more general apps intended for the whole of the iPad market, they focus on how it performs on the most used device (9.7), not the most powerful one. The exception being those such as Adobe type products aimed at the device that not only has the performance but needs it.

It's the first time I have turned my back on the latest and greatest device from Apple, I should be pleased that I finally said no to something :)

Now had they actually put more into the software, file system, ability to use external devices better and allowed full software to be installed, that would really have been a game changer and I would have spent big on this new iPad, as much as I would have spent on a MBP. But alas no. It's all dressed up but has nowhere to go.

macOS Lite...

Yea! For once!

Why is iOS not like or exactly the macOS, yet? That will make iPad the laptop/desktop substitute/replacement in a more potable form? IRL!

Why is Apple not moving in this direction, considering that the 11 and 12 series chips are as good as a PC chip? Maybe a ChromeBook iteration.

There are a bunch of apps and games that’ll take advantage of the power, but you’re right, it’s marginal compared to the 10.5. I actually prefer iOS to macOS, but I would welcome some improvements on the software side. I think this device was built with iOS 13 in mind, unfortunately. Still fun to use as my main machine.

Since Christmas day I have had one family member and one friend come round who got an iPad as a gift, both very clearly bent. Both are 11" and both have a bend in the middle, banana style. And yes put a steel rule on both, so it's not imaginary.

Just an update for what it's worth, my friend just messaged, he took his bent iPad back to the store today. They accepted it is an issue but asked him to return tomorrow and they will set one aside as they were low on stock with more in overnight.

The girl he spoke says they have had a 'few' being returned since Christmas day with bending issues. No elaboration on what a 'few' is in numbers.

Indeed, for the iPad to be a true replacement for your laptop it needs the same OS that your laptop runs on, or at least much of the functionality it offers. And the A12X is capable of making that happen.

I am fairly certain that we are already at the stage from a performance viewpoint where the first screen you see when starting up a new iPad Pro could say "Do you want to install IOS or macOS Lite?".

Maybe it's coming, Maybe it's not. There will be a number cruncher in the Apple accounting office quietly mumbling to themselves how it could potentially impact the sales numbers of the MBP. But then This does appear to be the direction Apple is moving.

Have a couple of colleagues who use the surface pro, docked at home and used as their main device with a keyboard, mouse and large screen monitor, a tablet when they want it as one and also a laptop when on the move. Works great for them. Pity, it's a Microsoft device, running Windows though :)

This reply doesn’t address the overall topic and doesn’t help with any clarity at all and this is now officially called “bickering”.

Please stop policing the forum. It’s for the moderators to determine that.

All should Ask themselves if their posts add value to the topic or create “bickering” I’ll review mine , you review yours ;) alas we are both guilty bud ! And I’ll avoid responding to your posts if your are going to keep labelling or accusing me. You have good opinions , Make MR a better place I say ;)

Have a good weekend.

^Agree with the Bolded. My 2017 12.9” would get very hot during intense drawing sessions. Eventually, it began exhibiting irresponsive touch issues which Apple did not back me up on. Go Apple Care! (/s).

Anyway, given how fragile some of the 2018 builds are, and that folks here are reporting these touch issues again in the 2018 12.9” iPP, I wouldn’t be surprised if heat is a possible culprit in bending iPads too.

On a similar tangent, while I was doodling in Notes on a 2018 12.9” in an Apple store, I thought for sure I’d break the iPP. Other issues and ridiculous pricing aside, that alone pushed me away. I am very gentle with my devices, but I felt if I started drawing with my usual intention, I would accidentally push the pencil through the “magical” piece of glass. I’d probably bend a 2018 iPP without even trying if heat does a number to the housing.

Just a bummer.

They knocked it out of Apple Park with the 2nd gen pencil, but I just do not understand the thinness obsession and using the cheapest components to make a fast buck. And then refusing returns to boot? That’s asking for another class action lawsuit (another rare one I’d approve of).

I am glad some folks are enjoying their 2018 models, but it’s sad how belligerent Apple are these days.
You bring up a good point. I wonder if making the case thinner was more to increase profit rather than making it lighter and thinner?

Make the iPad bigger, flashy, thin, precious, higher tech, etc., and people will see it as a jewel to own, than use it as they have been since the first iPad!

They will then ignore its weak structure and usefulness; and, pay twice as much for a desktop iPod! /s:p

Edit: *iPod Touch

Its all about making the max profits...... That is what apple is all about now......Why do you think prices have all increase across all products for the past few years.......

Not just the same OS, but the ability to easily transfer files, a decent keyboard, mouse and other device support, etc. It’s still a toy and laughable to compare it to a laptop, Windows or Mac.

All apple has to do is build a special edition ‘rugged’ ipad. That would at least give some of us who value durability over lightness a choice!
