Really; Maps better? Siri better? Touch bar better? Any of these anywhere near the best?

Maps : financial decision - not better
Siri : gimmick to push 4S - which could have become something great, but apple did not invest
Touch bar : gimmick

I'd argue that under jobs, they did release a product that was better than the competition, that's a physical product. Software / services it's been a mix. The Touch bar....yeah....dunno what they were thinking, sadly jobs was not around to say WTF and Cook was to say, how much can we put up the cost with that gimmick....and we have the most expansive MacBooks ever...

This is how I feel. Under Jobs ruling, I felt like there was competition and innovation. Now it just seems like they are churning out ideas just for the sake of "testing it out". The original Pixel had a better camera than the iphone 7, and a faster fingerprint reader. And it seems to be the same thing again this year, with the Pixel 2 vs iP8, with a better camera and the fastest fingerprint reader on a mobile device. Add in Google's AI and machine learning, it makes the iPhone X seem boring. Jobs would have been pushing innovation at this years iPhone event. Instead, there was FaceID. Cook has been a let down in my opinion. Its time someone else pushes for competition.

I think you are missing his point. Craig said that to unlock a certain portion of your face would have to be viewable and looking at the sensor. A way to test this is to open your camera and put it on the front camera. Half the time I unlock my phone, none of my face is visible. I leave it on my desk next to me and just unlock it with Touch ID, and do whatever I need without picking it up. Never once during the whole interaction was my face even partially visible to the front camera. The removal of touchID completely kills this extremely convenient workflow. I'll take the bottom bezel and touchID over edge to edge screen in every scenario.
Okay, but that wasn’t what he was talking about in that post. Check the part I bolded: “Plus I do not like being unable to wake up my device without unlocking.”

Sad to see that Apple is also a trendsetter for such mishaps. They used to set the trend (not inventing/being first) for many cool things like high DPI screens on mobile, multi-touch, and TouchID. Now they do anti-customer pseudo inventions like removing the headphone jack and replacing TouchID with something worse, and the rest of the industry still follows like mindless sheep.

I don't think Apple just decided anything... It said they were 'struggling' That doesn't mean Apple derided on something better just because, there is a clear reason why they decided on FaceID because they couldn't do make the entire screen TouchID responsive

If they could, they would have done it already.... Perhaps it may have just been a coincidence. I guess we'll never know on that one, unless you ask Apple themselves....

Qualcomm, on August 15th 2017, announced that their next generation Spectra ISP was going to have depth sensing capabilities and was to be integrated into flagship Snapdragon chips in 2018. So I don't see this coming as a surprise given it will be in the majority of Android flagships next year (of course, the OEMs still need to implement the required hardware). http://www.novingate.com/

What a lovely PR article for Apple and I don't believe any of it.

Face ID is a gimmick, fingerprints are far superior and I hope android give you the choice instead of forcing.

Pixel 2 here I come, actual innovation.

Yep, just look at bigger screens, OLED, small bezels, wireless charging, widgets, Apple Watch! Oh, wait....

Meanwhile everyone still follows Apple in the industry and waits to see what they will do. Good luck seeing a headphone jack in a flagship in the next year or two. You can thank Apple for that. :)

As long as Apple maintains their strong stance on privacy, they will always get my money over any Android/Google device. So, at this time and for the forseable future, I won’t be contributing to another company to drive competition. I do when I feel another product is at least ‘good enough’ to meet my needs. For instance, I just built a new PC and I had to go with AMD’s Ryzen this time around. Competition is ALWAYS good for consumers.

AMD Ryzen sucks , why not threadripper ?

First I tried Android 1.6 in 2009.
Then 2.1.
Then again year after year after year.
Nothing changed.
Just same laggy ultra complicated bullshіt since 1.6.
Who needs that?
How can one NOT hate that?
Why do we even talk about that here?

Well, Apple do seem to be heading that route, more and more gesture knowledge required to operate the phone, swiping down on an X is going to be a stretch too! The temporarily off Wi-Fi / Bluetooth being a good example - change of functionality with no obvious reason or notification leaving people confused. No option to change how it functions either. The old "easy" iOS is rapidly becoming pretty fiddly to use.

At it’s best, FaceID is the ultimate unlocking feature as it requires nothing from the user. If it’s your phone, you pick it up and start using it. If it’s not there yet, it will eventually become fast enough, with a wide enough viewing angle that it’s completely invisible to the end user. It’s the best bet Apple could have made.

The implications of this go beyond unlocking. This should have an effect on the springboard itself. If Apple wants to remove all friction from getting to your apps, picking up your phone and looking at it should go straight to springboard (bypassing the lock screen and the lock screen notifications). That means widgets or Live icons for glanceable information.

i'm pretty sure when c.Federighi was talking about being visible to the front facing cameras on current phones, he was talking about the range.. as in- how close or far you need to be from the depth sensors in order for it to get a read.. if the X is too close (like, only your nose & mouth could be visible to the current front facing camera), then it won't work..

he then went on to describe the angle which he said was 'fairly extreme'.

[edit]
here's the quote:

"It's quite similar to the ranges you'd be at if you put your phone in front facing camera mode [to take a picture]," he said. "Once your space from eyes to mouth come into view that would be the matching range - it can work at fairly extreme angles — if it's down low because your phone is in your lap it can unlock it as long as it can see those features. Basically, If you're using your phone across a natural series of angles it can unlock it."

this is nonsense.
according to KGI Securities Ming Chi Kuo,Samsung has succeeded in implementing finger print sensor under glass display and will be using that in Note 9.
so unproven and annoying Face ID will be un-necessary.
no one car argue that Touch ID is much more convenient and hassle free than face recognition.

i'm pretty sure Apple has also succeeded in an under display touchID solution.. they just chose not to use it in the X

That’s actually the last version of Windows I used so for me it kind of is 3.1 forever lol.

Best minesweeper and solitaire version (and icons) EVER!

And floppy disk, b&w tv, record player forever! Also rolling eyes! I’m actually looking forward to a phone with no orifices.

Actually with all this really nice looking high end record players that are in the market now I wish I had the spare money to buy one just to put it next to my home Hi-Fi, shame about the high prices.

And no one will need to.

The iPhone X is released at the end of the year. The S9 next year. Compare the two side by side when that happens. Test every use case imaginable.

You will have your answer.
