You can omit the floppy disc trope.

Everything else is still HEAVILY in use, so yes, it all applies.

Even Apple still supplies a headphone jack and optical drive, not to mention Ethernet, USB-A, etc... as DONGLES.

Sadly, for me what that means is:

I want my Apple but I'm leaving it for someone that gives me what I want.

Apple isn't losing sleep over it, so it's all good I guess.

Tough luck. And I do mean it.

But look at it this way. Apple could afford to remove the Ethernet jack because WiFi had become ubiquitous and reliable enough. The cd drive is now thicker than the MacBook itself. USB C is taking off in a big way over the past year. These features are needed (or will eventually be needed) only by a niche group of users and I think it’s ludicrous to expect Apple to leave them in just for this small user base, to the detriment of everyone else.

We can debate till the cows come home as to whether their removal was necessary or not, but we cannot deny that it took courage to be the first major player to remove these features, especially when you know you will get a lot of pushback and invite a ton of criticism and derision for it.

These changes have pushed the market in a specific direction, and we are, for most part, better for it.

We thank you for your sacrifice. It will not have been in vain.

Can anyone tell me what so “revolutionary” and so “advanced” about this thing? So I can unlock my phone and be a talking poop emoji? Cool, I guess? I don’t think anyone was really chomping at the bit for Face ID. Everyone here acting like it’s a dream come true lol

“Revolutionary”
“Others are following”

Wait a second! I’ve been reading these forums forever and I thought Apple doesn’t innovate anymore. I’m totally confused...

Apple makes wireless air pods. What can they do beside play music?

Google makes wireless ear buds and they can translate languages in real time. That is innovation.

People have a hard time with change, even if it’s better and more secure.
I learn a piece of software or app and get comfortable with using it. Then they always upgrade, change it to confuse me. It’s what software engineers do. Change things that work fine. Otherwise they out of a job.

I'm going to have a good laugh when this flops and everyone in the industry will have to backtrack

People have a hard time with change, even if it’s better and more secure.

Exactly. And Apple isn't afraid to make the change others won't. I admire they take initiative to bring the future to us, even if it means not everyone will support Face ID. It's an adaption phase and Face ID will take time to transition and become a reality soon enough. It's just a matter of accepting this new reality versus shunning it. But Face ID should at least be allowed to debut and then judge it. But I know Apple is confident in this technology and they value my security.

The earbuds aren’t translating anything. It’s all done on the pixel phone.

The feature sounds cumbersome and is something other companies have been working on. It’s also a very niche feature and I don’t see that many people actually using it, especially considering the low sales volume of the google pixel.

I mean, why not just talk into your phone app directly?

I don't mind the facial recognition. I use a passcode in lieu of touch ID anyways and wouldn't use the facial recognition either. I just don't want the notch. Nor do I want the round corners or rounded edges displays are getting. I want the rectangle. I could care less about a small bezel if it means having a proper screen.

Except it doesn’t work like that. The in-app faceID interface is identical to TouchID. They substituted in new GUI, but it behaves the same. You have to initiate the biometric by tapping the screen. (Eg for a bank app). For buying in app it used to be tap to buy then touch home. Now it’s tap to buy, put phone in faceID position and look at screen, and tap to confirm. But these are not the cases I refer to. But even in these cases it certainly seems like an extra step.

“Now it’s tap to buy, put phone in faceID position and look at screen, and tap to confirm“

If you’re tapping to buy, isn’t your face ALREADY in position? This is my point. When you’re using your phone your face is looking at the screen and is constantly in position for FaceID. So many operations could easily be done automatically without requiring any user intervention at all.

We still have to wait and see what Apple does. They’re telling developers that nothing needs to change in their code to use FaceID. As in iOS will “substitute” FaceID for TouchID and your App works exactly the same. But I don’t believe this will be permanent. FaceID opens up the possibilities of eliminating steps and can actually be faster and more convenient in some cases. I could see Apple offering an option to developers called “Automatically Authenticate When App Launches” that will open an App immediately using FaceID. Right now it’s about compatibility - later it will be about streamlining.

SE was introduced before iPhone 7 (which was first iPhone without 3.5mm)
Yes, laptops and iPads do still have it for now...but believe me when I say, not for long.
Apple does not make devices with optical drive anymore. Finito. Capish?
Touch ID is good but I wish people would not dismiss something before even using it. If face ID is as good as they make it to be then screw Touch ID. No need for tons of technologies that do same thing. Only need the best.

Try re-reading what I wrote

https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/produ...b19a5496d2884031c058cda8dc72954006aa81d7f20f4

Capish?

SE is still sold with headphone jack...... capish ?

Believe it when I say it, when you work in production and content creation ..... as Macs still are , the headphone jack is not going anywhere, capish ?

Your last two sentences are a complete contradiction of what is happening with apple products

Except they don’t.

The translation happens like it did before - on your device. All Google did is use the ear buds as a remote. They are still a simple pair of wireless ear buds, like everyone else.

Edit. Ninja’d.

Apple can keep their "courage". In their language, it is directly associated with removal.

Apple had the courage to destroy everything that attracted me to their platform: from the Mac Pro, to sealing up machines, to not being able to revert software versions that came with my device, to soldering RAM and SSDs (!) on ALL portables, to requiring dongles for EVERY.DAMN.THING.

I hope companies like Samsung continue to have real courage, continue to think different, and continue go against the "remove, Remove, REMOVE" trend that has taken Apple over. I for one welcome the "everything but the kitchen sink" approach. My Note8 is the most kickass smartphone I've ever used, and its combination of features is second to NONE, all in a sexy, attractive package and ZERO compromises (yes it has a headphone jack). Sammy has turned me into a Note fanboy with this device. If it had a removable battery, it'd be perfect.

What you call "bloat" here, I call "choice" and "freedom". Realistically speaking, if someone wants to get into your device, they will. The only real secure option is a complex password stored in your mind. Everything else is for convenience's sake. And FaceID is no more convenient than anything else out there.

All that said, FaceID is impressive on paper and it IS evidence of Apple innovation, despite the epic fail on the Keynote which shows it's limitations. It is exciting to think where the tech could be going, although I'll be happy for other companies to follow Apple here and maybe even teach them a thing or two, so long as it is not at the expense of choice, like it always is for Apple.

It’s easy to do more with more. What’s harder is being to do just as much, if not more, with less, and that is the route Apple has chosen to take, and it’s a mentality I respect and admire.

I am genuinely happy that your note phone is serving you well. Personally, I just prefer Apple's design principles vs Samsung's kitchen sink approach.

To each their own, I say. Let us each use the device which best suits our individual needs, and be happy that we at least have the option of doing so.

Craig even said that if this face-id is very well receptive, then they would apply it for next models..or future models.

With most viewing you do have a normal screen. Bezels and all. Only if you tap the screen going to full screen view does the notch show. Otherwise screen is reduced and square hiding notch with black on other end to make it simetrical. It’s been shown many times.

And you are wrong - having both Face ID and Touch ID would be worse than simply having Face ID on the phone, because the reality is that most users would opt to stick with Touch ID out of a sense of familiarity, thereby negating the improved security benefits that would come with Face ID.

You can’t predict how people would choose to secure their phones.

Having TouchID as an option has ZERO affect on how YOU secure YOUR device.

One example that solves your concern: During setup, ask for FaceID first, then passcode, then ask if they wan to setup ToucID. Hell, if they wanted to hide it, force users to go into settings later to set up TouchID. This way people have to already know about TouchID or discover it in settings. Setting up TouchID wouldn’t shut down FaceID. Authentication would be TouchID+FaceID. I can imagine allowing only TouchID, say if you break the front cameras.

I’m just spitting **** out of nowhere. I don’t even need to bother trying to justify a personal preference.

It’s baffling that people are so against the idea of behind-the-screen TouchID as an option. It wouldn’t affect you at all. Why is it so concerning how other people secure their devices? Should everyone give up on Android because it’s too insecure to use?

Take a look in the ios11 section of this forum, many complaints. Complete opposite of a polished product.

https://forums.macrumors.com/forums/ios-11.202/

And still a very polished experience overall despite all that.

There’s still my Apple Watch. AirPods. Apple Pencil. None of which could work without Apple's control over hardware and software. It’s the whole package deal, and a few bugs in the OS doesn’t negate Apple's accomplishments here.

I Want My Touch ID and I will keep my touch ID.

If I had the time I’d look up everyone complaining now about Apple PROGRESSING technology and see if any of you sane people contributed to the quadrillion posts bashing them for not “leading” or “innovating” “since Steve died”.

Seriously.

Vocal minority vs silent majority. Hundreds of millions of users are on iOS 11. Why don’t we have millions upon millions of threads/posts both here or at Apple Support forums complaining about all these issues?

The only reason it seems like a lot of bugs is because of the sheer number of users. Beta testing and automated testing can spot lots of issues, but nothing stress tests your software more than a few hundred million people all trying it within the first two weeks.

Shoot, there goes that innovation claim.

Two updates in matter of days. 11.0.1 and 11.0.2. That’s response. With the “other” ones you lucky to ever get an update period.

Unless the glass over the camera is foggy or wet, which will distort the image and probably prevent it from working. What about if I'm having a bad day and my face is not in the "neutral-happy" pose it was in when I setup Face ID?

Lol, you think all 30,000 dots that it mapped over your entire face will suddenly be in completely different places & different distances apart, making a wildly different & unrecognizable pattern.... if you’re a bit grumpy???

Lol, do your friends & family not recognize you whenever you get grumpy?? Are you Dr. Jeckyl/Mr. Hyde??

Well so far, the very first demo of FACE ID was a complete and utter failure. So we'll see how that embarrassment shakes out in the media.

As for Apple being leading edge, sometimes they pick a tech to kill that actually hurts their market share.
I watch eBay sales, iPhone 6s prices went up when they dropped the headphone jack and I see iPhone 7 sales going up with this current launch. I just think there's going to be a lot more skepticism of Face ID after the failed launch. Tim Cook's a bean counter, hardly a visionary. Steve Jobs is dead. He didn't give Timmy the Reality Distortion Field. Steve Jobs could have sold Edsels in droves for Ford. I"m anxious to see how Timmy gets through this. Unlike Jobs, he's not a media darling. His charisma could fit in a thimble.

The glaring thing about Touch ID is that Tim Cook was seen unclothed. Steve Jobs would have never let anyone know that Apple failed at getting Touch ID under the screen. You wouldn't even know about it.
You'd only know there's this AMAZING ONE MORE THING called FACE ID! :D
