My 2012 rMBP is going strong. I had the screen replaced in the first few years free due to a screen issue. My battery just last year started showing that it was going to fail. Apple replaced it, my main logic board which happens to house my memory, SSD and keyboard for free. I am not sure why it was done for free but I did have to wait two weeks for them to get the parts in. So basically my case has lasted all this time. It is by far the best built laptop I have owned. Will I get a new one. No. Not with the poor keyboard and options that have been removed. Shame really.

Apple has lost its way under Tim Cook. They used to make good computers that I could without hesitation recommend but that has long been put in the past. Apple only cares about how much money they can stash away from the taxman in offshore accounts and shady deals with Countries.

It's amazing how Apple's laptops keep getting worse.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you. For me my mid-2015 was my favorite Mbp. My 2017 mbp is not only underwhelming but the keyboard mechanism is horrendous. and the lack of USB-a port is extremely frustraitng at times.

And can someone please explain to me why apple thought removing the MagSafe was a good idea. MagSafe saved my laptop on multiple ocassions.

Because it let Apple make an already asininely thin device even thinner and in their mind justified a price gouge

I wouldn't trade my 2012 MacBook Pro Retina for anything today, mainly because Apple no longer uses an NVIDIA gpu. As a developer I need to take advantage of the Optix ray tracer and CUDA library and not fuss around with the alternatives that have very little marketshare.

The fact that they have to do this to spur upgrades may be indicative of Mac build quality since Windows does not need to due to dying at a faster rate than Mac based on my experience. The only laptop that survived long was the one with internal flash memory and no vents.

Now this is troublesome.

In the last few months, my rMBP (2012 model) developed a stuck pixel - or better yet pixels - just to the left of the center of the screen. I say pixels, because it is about the size of a period.

I was debating getting a replacement screen, which still isn't all that cheap... though the laptop is otherwise running fine and quite snappy.

It would suck to do so then have Mohave yank support before the GM release - Apple's pulled stuff like this before.

How easy is it to replace the battery in a 13 MBA and should I do it myself? I'm leaning towards doing it myself and saving some hassle with Apple and cost
MacBook Air batteries are not glued in so it shouldn’t be too difficult. I believe it’s in like a plastic frame with screws holding it. I think the bottom case screws are pentalobe though.

Speaking of vintage- I have an iMac from spring 2009- never any problems. It's using Lion 10.7.2. I may not be able to make secure transitions online because the browsers supported may not have the latest security features - I get it. But there's reasons. My MacBook Pro is 2011. In late 2015, when I shut down my Mbp while in in-patient rehab after surgery, I could not boot up the next morning. Prior to that I rarely shut down, opting for sleep. But the vram - display was all in hues of vibrating red and purple- sort of oscillating.
The shut down, but not able to start up sent alarms. The sr. advjdor sent me a shippinge box- I found out there was a recall. It was the video issue. All new logic board, display replaced, new battery, etc.
It took 4 days from shipping Fedex to receiving. No cost. I even got support from Apple to get files transferred to my iMac via FireWire cable to share screen.
Fast forward 2 years. Another issue- logic board again? Mother board/logic board- just 2 years later? Not good! No internal damage- but they couldn't repair parts. Had to replace - 2 years later!!? And I was told at the store it's vintage! I'm not happy! $550 later! Is that the life cycle to replace a logic board???
Another situation.october2016. I download iOS 10 for my iPhone. Then it won't allow me to sync-my phone to iTunes - due to lion on my mcp. The Apple Store iinstalled Mavericks to my mcp, so the MVP sees my iPhone- but I c annot access my ( iPhoto's) I won't go into the hassles I endured having to wait dAGAIN, when I now needed iPhoto (photos).
But I now need Yosemite- but at the Apple Store im told vintage . And vintage is what I'm told by my advisor! But I need Yosemite and I know I'm going to run into the same b.s. Like what happened installing iOS 10. So I cannot install iOS 11 without Yosemite.
And from what I researched, I can install
Yosemite OS OOn my MBP and still run my Adobe creative suite 5.5. MASTERCOLLECTION. I also own CS4 master collection. And cs3 design suite.
I could upgrade free to high sierra, but that would render myCS5.5 suite useless.

And with the several thousand bucks invested in adobe software, I'm in no position to put it on the shelf to collect dust and shell out $50. /month for subscriptions. The basics in Photoshop, illustrator, indesign are all the same.

So besides having Apple consumer relations look into the out of pocket expense for replacing a logic board /GPU only 2 years after the recall, I don't understand why the problem with getting Yosemite. I don't think ElCapitan will work. And I don't know of a verifiable way to ensure elcapitan will work.
But to be told I can't get Yosemite for my Mbp, because it's vintage makes no sense.
Someday I may get newer. But with everything I read-Will it be another Mac?
After reading about butterfly keyboard, perhaps there is a lot of credibility about
declining quality of Mac's.

And the iMac? I have a used G4- the original G4 was damaged by a power surge spike. Once I get the G4 set up and connected on the network, I'm going to install my quark xpress 7 and all quark files from the iMac to the G4. And that will handle those files, and use CS 3 or 4.
Then the iMac will only upgrade to mountain Lion, maybe Mavericks, and that's as far as that goes. I may not be able to sync my iPhone 6 with the iMac, but I need Yosemite so I can install ios11. This is what a starving mac user and graphic designer does when you don't have a blank check.

Any suggestions on other ways of getting Yosemite? And consumer relations?
Thank you
Larry. Designer58 (at) Comcast (net).
Make a small partition on your drive (30GB) and install High Sierra to that. Boot into it whenever you need a newer macOS version.

Using the 2015 15” model. I’m willing to overlook the port situation if the new models get reliable keyboards and a cheaper non-Touch Bar option for the 15”. Love the new design otherwise, but not for current pricing.
Yes, the 2015 15" form factor is the perfect Laptop for me. I don't personally need "thinner" - I hope my present one lasts a long time, but all they had to do with the present line was introduce newer Processors, faster SSD's & more efficient batteries as technology improves & put them in the same shell.
But instead they made something so "advanced" that you have to buy Dongles to do anything. Or maybe you just watch iTunes or You Tube stuff - forget about typing, as your "revolutionary" butterfly keyboard probably doesn't work.

Unless you need to connect to routers to repair them, like I have to in my computer repair business.
Obviously the majority and Apple should for sure design around router repair people...

As a former mid 2015 owner who now has a 2017 unit I can tell you the keyboard took about 15 minutes to adjust to and now I can never go back. Tech employee of 20 years.

And I was very skeptical

I'm glad I got the battery replaced with it earlier this year. I was expecting the move. The 2012 rMBP is the best laptop I've ever owned
Yep, the last great Apple computer maybe? My 2012 rMBP is still going strong. When it finally comes time to replace it, I’ll be getting a Windows laptop.

Vintage? what a pi$$take.

Mine runs as good as the day it was made, is just as capable as the current models, and it will likely be the last Mac I buy.

They've lost the plot entirely and I'm tired of the nonsense.

Then it better be the last _computer_ you buy... because there is nothing better on the Windows side. Sure - there are “ok” things... but they have just as many problems as the new MBP machines... and they run Windows and have TERRIBLE (I mean - godawful) trackpads (how, after all these years, have Windows laptops not been able to copy the trackpad!?).

I have one of the newest 15” MBP with touchbar. Keyboard is odd until you get used to it. Touchbar is fine. It’s still a Mac that runs OSX and gets **** done...

My 2012 rMBP still going strong. Battery is also still good. It is really disappointing how Apple managed to make new rMBP worse...

Just looking at those pics, it looks like they could have kept old ports, magsafe, sd card reader and still make the laptop thinner.

What they should have done was keep magsafe, usb c port, phone jack on the left side and on the right usb c and sd card. To me that would have been the perfect mix.
[doublepost=1530772874][/doublepost]I don't think Jobs would have gone along with these products.

Interesting to read that people still have 2012-2013 MBPs that seem like indestructible workhorses whilst those of us with modern 2016-17 models are petrified of a mote of dust landing them!

2012 rMBP was an epic tool, almost the perfect balance. Sadly today Apple has forgotten how to design and produce "amazing" computers this is what I expect in 2018 from a notebook combined with a sensible port solution for professional use.

After over 20 years I'm now on Windows for my professional needs, as tricks & bells simply don't cut it. Being the thinnest simply doesn't make sense in the real world. Mac's have just become overpriced toy's, I now view the MacBook Pro in the same light as the PlayStation Pro a little higher spec, a lot more price.

Apple in 2018 has clearly no regard for it's professional userbase, therefore I no longer have any regard for Apple, nor does Apple remotely deserve any recommendation...

I did own the 2016 model for three months and I absolutely loved the weight reduction, smaller footprint and thinness. It’s not a huge difference, but they all add up to a slightly better experience when on the move.

Also the speakers and screen are incredible and the keyboard is much better IMO (if it works).

When I went from the 2014 to 2016 and back to 2015, I missed the ‘refined’ feel of the 2016 model.

The pre-touch bar rMBP is still the best of the crop in terms of features and IO - sure the latest all-USB C models have more powerful CPUs and GPUs, but I never got used to the stupidly flat keyboard and never found much use for the touch bar (and it even became a major annoyance on the 13-inch model as I keep hitting the ESC key with my left pinky).
