Still got mine and going strong. it really is the pinnacle of laptop design as far as i'm concerned, so much so that, unless the current generation of Mac laptops when it finally dies has a macsafe-like-connector and more ports including an SD card slot, i'll be moving back over to PC after 20 years as a Mac-only customer. Their USP of being well designed and "just work" is long gone.

Wow, it seems that 2012 was a really good year for MacBooks, according to everyones comments.
I have a mid 2012 13" MBA which I still use and have never had an issue with. Although I wish I'd gone with more RAM and more SSD. Darn! If only I had a crystal ball back then. But still its good enough. :)
And then I still use my iPod Nano 6th gen, also bought in 2012, for workouts etc.
2012 was a good year.

My 2012 MacBook Retina is still working perfectly. My office has offered to upgrade it but I haven't seen the need.

The way things are going as soon as they release something it will immediately become vintage

One way to keep sales up I guess

Still rocking my 2012. She is still a beauty, albeit a beauty that gives me 'service battery' warnings. God I've loved this laptop. For all the moaning about the integrated graphics on the 2012 model, I still find she handles admirably in most cases except for running 3d in Simulator.

All apple needs to do is stick a new processor into the older 2011 MacBook Pro, include 32gb ram 2 ssds, and a decent graphics card, no need to design a new Mac, just do this and you will make the Mac great again.

What a great machine. It’s hard to believe it is now vintage. The 2012 rMBP was my first MBP. Before that I used a 2010 11” MBA. I loved the rMBP and it was my daily driver for four solid years. It went with me all around the world and besides an early image retention issue (which Apple quickly fixed) I had no problems with it.

When the new MBP came out in 2016 I decided to move on to a 13”. I was traveling and the smaller form factor and weight was really attractive to me. Plus I wanted more storage than the base 256GB I had with my 2012 rMBP. So I got the new 2016 13” (without touch bar) as soon as they were available.

I guess I am lucky as I have had zero problems with my 2016 MBP over 19 months of daily use. Some days though I miss the 2012. It was an awesome computer and if I didn’t want something smaller I probably would have kept it longer

Which means that they are great products for the masses.

We can’t just design products solely for the pros...

Equally some balance is expected, not solely toy's for the masses. Apple is all too happy to portray itself as serving it's professional audience to make it's base customer's feel better about their expensive purchases, yet in reality it's simply a sales & marketing vehicle.

As I have stated; I've never seen so many speak of, follow up and leave the platform. Pro with Apple is now little more than a meaningless concept for the uniformed, you reap what you sow...

It’s remarks like this which remind me why I sometimes have problems empathising with the “pro” crowd over Apple’s supposed neglect of the Mac.

Especially when the trade off is Apple (presumably) focusing more on products like the iPad Pro which I do use and benefit heavily from.

Indeed Apple does.

Indeed Apple does.

Last year's free battery/top case replacement and wiping the drive injected new life into mine!

Won't replace it anytime soon for the following reasons:

Gaming: I occasionally use Playstation now to play PS4 games on the Mac. It works beautifully.
Intensive tasks: Since 3 years ago I don't to any creative work using the adobe suite.
Screen quality: My next laptop screen must either be OLED or 4K.
Reliability: It's been utterly faultless with no issues. The HDMI and USB ports are a good bonus.

sad news... I still use maxed out rMBP 2012, and except that it gets relatively hot sometimes, performance-wise it's still sufficient even for the demanding tasks. Planned to buy a new one in 2016 and 17, but glad I didn't do that as these two revisions are bad and limited (for the price you pay). I really hope they will come with something more interesting this year. Still, will be missing a lot magsafe, USB-A. Even removal of iconic glowing logo was not a good step forward. It's amazing when you put these two machines next to each other (2012, 2017), it looks like Apple has been sleeping for years and what is even even more tragic, that it's getting worse rather than getting better. I mainly blame Cook for the current tragedy situation. He always lies when he says how much they care about end users. Honestly, they don't give a crap as long as $ is flowing in. Very sad Mac situation nowadays.. I would not hesitate to call rMPB 2012 better than 2017. Really difficult to understand..

You have to wonder what is being built into Mojave besides the end of 32 bit support that will gimp out the legions of pre-2014 macbook pros out there that are working professionals "daily drivers".
He? Macbook Pros of Mid 2012 or newer are supported - where did you get that 2014 from?

Quintessential problem being, we can emphasise with your needs, however you are clearly incapable of seeing ours. Bottom line is when the hardware is incapable or puts one at a competitive disadvantage it rapidly becomes commercially unviable. Hence why I have no problem in disregarding the "WOW Apple's Amazing by default" crowd...

None of us are asking Apple to take your toy's away  rather more honor it's commitment to it's professional users or quit with the BS as it's getting real old..

Yes you are right, the previous benchmark screenshots I posted were single-core benchmarks. These are multi-core, 2012 outperforms 2017:

So you are saying a 4-core 2012 MBP outperforms a 2-core 2017 MBP by 10%?

I also love mine and it still does everything I need. The only bummer is the smaller HD and I hate using externals so the next one will have to get a 2TB version.. can't believe the cost on the SSD'd still though.

One thing that makes me laugh is that everyone is wishing they didn't ditch mag safe. Yet on Windows surface laptop reviews who have their version of Magsafe they are rated down for not using USB c.

Can't please everyone I guess.

I have a 512GB drive and at one point wished I bought a bigger drive or splurged on an SSD Drive. Thanks to Netflix, Spotify and optimised storage using iCloud, I'm barely reached 50% of the capacity.

If I was to nitpick, the 15 inch Macbook Retina does feel heavy compared with newer laptops.

And even a handy hdmi port! All this is why it's the final laptop from Apple that's an obvious buy. But though it's still available in the form of the 2014-2015 model, even that too is now so old and abandoned/EOL'd, that it makes little sense to pay top dollar for one, only to look forward to Apple obsoleting it in what, 3 years...

After the 2015 MBP, they turned their Mac line into an underfeatured & overpriced iOS device-like line of disposable toys. And still they can't wrap their heads around a pro-level tablet. If they want to remain a premium brand, they're going to have to get back to delivering premium products, because with a 4-5 year old product line, that Apple logo is in danger of becoming an embarrassment once again.

Is dismissing the iPad Pro I use daily for work a “toy” your way of showing that?

I do feel that the Mac line is getting the proportionate amount of attention it deserves in light of its relative importance (and profitability) to Apple, and its general lack of synergy with everything else that Apple sells.

Yeah, this is where we hit the crossroads.

People who think that Apple is great despite neglecting the Mac (or perhaps precisely because they neglect the Mac) vs the people who are upset over this.

And honestly, I don’t see Apple walking back on this. At best, the MacBook Pro this year may feature faster processors and hopefully an improved keyboard, but it will likely retain its usb C ports and touchbar. And maybe eventually transition to an all-glass keyboard with haptic feedback.

The halcyon days of Mac computing you are all reminiscing over here? I don’t think it’s ever coming back.

Your iMacs and MBPs are just over a year old while the iMac Pro was released at the start of the year. It’s not the complete lineup that users want, but you can’t entirely say that Apple isn’t committed to its Mac users.

Yeah the only reason I need the space is because I still have large iTunes/photo/video libraries. I keep thinking of all the money ive spent on my music collection over the years and it feels a waste to abandon it for streaming.

for me it would be nice to have everything in one place instead of reaching for the external HD or iMac upstairs etc.

I believe the 2015 model is still being manufactured... so get them while they are still being built. They are sturdy and reliable. True and tested. Also amazing how cool it runs running browser for Safari.

Bought a 5k iMac last year to replace my 2011 iMac, but I feel no pressure to upgrade my 2012 MBA, and I am cool with that.

I have made my peace with the state of Apple’s Mac lineup. Perhaps it’s time you all did as well. You have all pointed out that a company of Apple’s size should have the resources to keep their Macs updated, so clearly there’s some other reason for this?
