Apple's First MacBook Pro With Retina Display is Now 'Vintage'

Sharper text on Mac but resolution's has slipped down since 2012.. Dell has now overtaken Apple and others in 2018.

I wouldn't say "amazing." They made costly mistakes with the keyboards on the MacBooks and a big miss with the trashcan Mac Pro. All companies drop the ball from time to time. Now they're making amends. It sucks, but what can you do?

I dunno, some people can only think a company can get better.

I was "forced" to buy an updated MacBook Air last month as a stop gap measure when my out of AppleCare Pro died. Not holding my breath for a quad-core release with the flutter-F*@K keyboard issues they are experience and will wait for a redesign or it's hello....... HP or Dell!

I'm considering a Surface.

Ahh, come on Apple. Unless you begin to finally upgrade those Mac machines the entire fleet is going to become “vintage.” Get off your duff and do somthing. Either improve the hardware or dump the entire lot..

Stop the incessant port elimination. WiFi and bluetooth just doesn’t cut it. We want and require actual hardware to hardward connectivity via USB, RJ45, firewire and a myriad of hardware hardwire connectivity.. Thin is thin enough and I don’t want to fight that heavy slick skinny thing trying to keep it in my lap or on my desk..

That is what that lady on the Statue of Liberty just shouted

Still rocking my 2012 15"...however there isn't much left from the original machine:

- Screen replaced about 3 years ago due to stuck pixels
- Logic board replaced about 2 years ago due to known graphics issues
- Bottom case replaced due to worn out battery about a year ago

By my reckoning the only original part is the bottom cover!

Only hardware replacement in my MBP(1,1), 2006, were 4 batteries - the user replaceable kind. Not bad for 12 years.

Maybe include also Lenovo in that list of alternatives? The ThinkPad keyboards are awesome.

Curious what would be a reasonable price for one today? Seeing some online in great condition at $600 CDN - would you jump?

My last MacBook was a mid-2014 Pro 15" Retina. Loved that machine, thin and sleek, yet a good solid workhorse with decent I/O. Sold it after I finished college, decided to go back to college and when I went looking for a new MacBook all I found were overpriced toys using last years hardware and needing a half dozen dongles just to have the same I/O options as my old one, all while costing double the price of a similar spec'd PC laptop. I finally gave up an bought a Lenovo, and two years later my Lenovo still goes toe-to-toe with the latest MacBook Pros in terms of performance.

Neglect of the Mac made me switch to PC, and the way things are looking I'll doubt I'll have any reason to switch back.

I'm still rocking my 2011 MacBook Pro that I upgraded with more RAM and an SSD. It went 'vintage' last year but with the upgrades it's still going strong. Been using it every single day 6+ hrs a day without fail, I'm even typing this on it now.

Shame Apple has spoiled their MacBook Pro line with the non-upgradeability, lack of ports and their obsession with slimness

Still happy with my 13” mid 2014. Apple refurb with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. Never once felt I needed to upgrade.

This was my first retina display, my first with 16 ram, as well as the first SSD, which was something I'd been wanting for years. A huge advance.

Just before AppleCare ran out, a bunch of things were replaced and it has been in as-new condition ever since, because I now use a pink MacBook as my day-to-day. The 15" still gets used for side stuff, still looks brand new, still works really well.

I would say I respected my 15" MacBook Pro a lot, but I did not really love it. Not like I love this little MacBook or my first Mac, the 12" 2004 PowerBook I bought the day Tiger came out. Maybe the 15" was just a little too big, but it was a magnificent machine the day I bought it and it still is.

Lets not forget all the issues with the 2012 either. The diabolical image retention problems, the staingate.

Mine was affected by both of these issues and was and still in part is a P.O.S. - the screen still ghosts badly even though they replaced it twice. I consider this part of the final nails in the coffin for me as a 25 year apple customer.

Crapple.

I have a 2013 with some pathetic image retention. Horrible. I do not want the 16/17. Next model is make it or break it with me and Apple notebooks.

I had this laptop at base config. I loved that thing. My dad uses it now, and it's still going very strong.

I "upgraded" to the 2015 15 inch model with the dedicated graphics. AMD 370x I believe it is. I got the maxed out model. The GPU in that thing is so extremely bad that I often use an app to force use of the integrated graphics, because the AMD chip throttling is insane. Once it starts throttling, it performs worse than integrated. Throttling starts after a few minutes of graphics intense stuff. After speaking to the genius bar, I was told that throttling was intended behavior.

I am never getting another apple laptop due to that experience.

To me this is when the MacBook Pro peaked. It's wonderful having a beautiful machine that also has HDMI and an SD port. I know I could get this from the PC world easily, but I haven't wanted to. I think my next machine will have to be a PC though.

Its probably because they're running out of replacement parts to fix them, along with the overhead and cost of supporting a 6 year old laptop
I guess I'll replace my battery while I can. I hope Europe is not low on battery stock for me. Also, I expect macOS Mojave to be the last OS upgrade for this MacBook Pro model. I hope Apple will release a good model this year otherwise I am stuck with this model till October next year or even 2020.

Looks like my 2013 will be vintage soon. I adore this macbook. Its need a new battery and a few key are a little weak, but otherwise its held up like a champ, and the support has been incredible. I just hope the keyboard issues are resolved by the time this machine dies so I won't have to abandon the mac.

This is courage, courage to stuff dongles down customers throats, and make pro machines less useful. And for what, a mm reduction? Less ports so Mr. Ivy can get closer of achieving his personal goal of selling the world polished slabs of aluminum?

but guys, nothing is wrong with Apple. Shares are up. So next time you get screwed because you don’t have a dongle with you, just think... shares are up! So you are the one who is doing it wrong...
