Everyone here taking cheap cracks at Ive seem to not understand how big of a role he played in Apple's success. Yeah I think some of his thinness at all costs philosophy went overboard in recent years, but the man did some incredible work for the company.

Arguably if it wasn't for products like the original iMac, iPod, and iPhone they'd be nowhere near where they are today and he was instrumental in all 3. Go look at other computers, mp3 players, and phones from those eras and think about how big of a game changer Apple's design language was in those market segments.

Happy, that Jony Ive was silently pushed out of Apple company finally ??

Too many stupid guidelines and not enough basic and haptic work on ergonomic behalfs has led to a 5 years period of paralysis not least of kept-down laptop turnover/lost boom in comparison to competitors.

Good bye to:
TouchBar (expensive and useless)
thinnest design with low quality keyboard (loud, not soft enough and high failure rate)
socket austerity
MagSafe: hello welcome!

STILL OPEN for repair:
USB-A-3.1 socket (for daily use and exchange – the most adapters can be kept in the drawer or can be given to IVE MUSEUM of HIGH SCHOOL OF DESIGN, he dreamt about ? )
too big Touch Pad (not necessary and keeps hands in tension/flying – old size of MBP/2014 MBA 2017 far enough)

We don't talk about other bad results (iPhones, iPads) – just in connection to Air Pods 1rst gen. and with his advertising seducing voice we can keep him in best memory.

Please keep him out – thanks to TIM :apple:

That was the goal though, "thinness at all cost". The innovations and designs he came up with to make it thinner can't be denied, but at the sacrifice of usability. Taking away ports because "it didn't fit into his design or vision" is bad design. Yes, there's a lot of thought that goes into it, but it boils down to removing things because it couldn't get it thinner and thinner. That's how we ended up with the disastrous butterfly keyboard. The removal of connectivity to go to "dongletown". The "10 hour battery life" constant. They made their power consumption better and better, but took away more and more battery space to...again, say it with me...make it thinner. I mean, thinness was part of their presentation and advertising! "The thinnest MacBooks yet!".

So no, this isn't reactionary. This is form getting in the way of function. Ive is a brilliant designer, but obviously he needs supervision.

Ah but you see your post is a more thoughtful post than many, and while I don't agree with everything you've stated - some of your points are subjective - I can respect that you're giving reasoning and examples instead of the usual glib posts about Ive that proliferate here.

I think 'supervision' tends to imply that Ive isn't a remarkably capable, world-class product designer and is instead undertaking an apprenticeship. If I was siding with the train of thought that Ive's choices need some kind of restraint, I think I'd go for 'benefits from checks & balances' (which, alas, may have been an element of Steve Jobs' role).

Unpopular opinion: I’m not a big fan of Apple’s design language after Ive left. The new MacBook Pro’s are thick and ugly. And the old ports are overhyped. Photographers have already moved past SD card and HDMI 2.0 is on its way out to make way for HDMI 2.1

The MagSafe is great though.
Fully agree. New MacBook Pros are the winners in FATUGLY nomination this year.

Don't like Ive's designs? Fine, let us know why. Don't agree with his choices on features? Okay, give us your thoughts. Making fun of his (or anyone's) looks or the way he speaks is childish and unnecessary. Maybe I'm in the minority in thinking this way, but it's not why I read the posts on Macforums.

Wanna laugh at something? Compare your bank account with his.

It's a good thing you don't have any say in their design decisions. USB A is dead and has no place on modern laptops and the trackpads are perfect as is.

How many people hating on Jony were also hyping anything and everything Apple released while he was there?

This is so similar to professional sports fandom, and all those that hate players as soon as they change jerseys.

Can’t wait! Since he doesn’t work for Apple anymore he’ll just talk about random stuff? Decided to check out his website. There’s nothing there. Not even a single picture.

It’s invisible ?

oc here thinks they're funny somehow, there is actually content on the website, you can see what it is for yourself. nothing particularly important, but what this person neglects to realize is jony ive & co. don't need to have some portfolio to put up.

oc: someone entirely unimportant, thus would need to work hard to demonstrate they're capable of doing something in particular.

jony ive in the same meeting: "hi, im jony ive"

I'm merely curious to see what he's doing, because I don't miss him at all at Apple.

I'd be (admittedly pleasantly) surprised if he's behind ANY of the new Apple designs.

seemingly a good deal of people around here dislike him, even though apple's portfolio is built on his artistry

I'll laugh if he says he was involved with the design of both. So many have been saying how happy they are he's gone due to these products would be funny if he was involved in bringing them forward.
"Involved" doesn't mean his ideas were the ones they went forward with. I've been involved in a meeting where they went with somebody else's idea............

In 5 to 10 years I would agree to you – but if you are working hard with your MBs and need exchange with others (customers, clients) you never receive or pass over an USB-C-Stick – you take the smallest and cheapest available:

USB-A 3.1 – right?! ?

Maybe you prefer to use an adapter for this purpose ? – don't forget to pass one to customer/client, too?

If you would see Ive's MBP in Modern Art Museum with plugged in all these horrible adapters people needed to keep in basket...

Yep, USB A is everywhere. They guy you replied obviously needs ESP as it seems he's missing a bit of reality.

You need to balance highly opinionated people against each other. If you don't that the person eventually dominates and things start going a bit weird.

Hollywood has the same problem; just look at the great directors who now turn out schlock because they are "a genius."

Pixar handles this by having many, many highly opinionated and successful people, all of whom have the aura of authority about them.

But they have the thin alternatives without the ports...it's a misguided opinion.

Why is there such hate over this guy? You guys angry he left your beloved Apple?

Great industrial design should pit form against function.

However, Apple swung way too far into the form. It's great to see function drive more design.

But that doesn't make Ive's opinions trash. Listening to the designers and creating the right balance is crucial.
When you look at Apple products released following the death of Steve Jobs, it is very clear that Jony was Form and Steve was Function. Jony went for pure elegance, his designs were beautiful and elegant, but Steve could edit and make sure just the right amount of practicality remained to create magic. I mean Steve made his share of flubs, but the man understood there was a fuzzy line between people believing in magic and pure frustration.

My long standing theory has been that after Steve's passing there was no one on the executive team with the relational authority to edit the mad genius designer that had worked and reported only to Steve Jobs for so long.

Ive is one of the most influential designers in the past 100 years. Like the man or not, have to respect his legacy.
