That picture looks like a nursing home resident confused by technology.
Yeah I was just thinking he looks similar to Uncle Junior from the Sopranos.

But they have the thin alternatives without the ports...it's a misguided opinion.
Not one with a 15 inch screen. I am a developer. I need a larger screen. And I need it to be as light weight as possible.

A pro can’t really live without adaptors and dongles. The best Apple can do is to give high speed common ports and let professionals adapt it to their needs. And push camera, projector and TV makers to adopt a USB C interface, which Apple failed to do.

It is an unpopular opinion as I said, but these additional ports could have been handled differently. Steve Jobs would not have bought back these ports. He would have made the world change to USB C.

Unpopular opinion: I’m not a big fan of Apple’s design language after Ive left. The new MacBook Pro’s are thick and ugly. And the old ports are overhyped. Photographers have already moved past SD card and HDMI 2.0 is on its way out to make way for HDMI 2.1

The MagSafe is great though.
The new MacBook Pro’s are gorgeous. Slightly thicker and very welcome so. They now feel sturdy as opposed to before when they felt delicate and easy to damage.

all designers have their highs and lows and even though the website leaves much to be desired..cryptic minimalist or whatever, he did do some neat things esp since the original iphone. We can black out the last 5 years of this career when the ports were removed from the mbp..

however, remember when they revealed the first manila slim macbook...wonder if he had his hands on that. Those bezels at the time were massive!

Ive’s much maligned push to go thin was simply his recognizing that most people really didn’t want to have a 2”-3” thick, plastic, laptop, as used to be common in the PC market. And eliminating ports [that are considered market standard] has been an Apple tradition going way back. I remember people laughing at Apple when they launched computers that only accepted 3.5” floppy disks, while most PC’s still took 5.25” disks, then a year later, everyone else shifted away from 5.25” disks too. Change is hard for most people and companies, especially when one company forces the change in order to move certain tech ahead.

I do wonder what JI’s 10 year vision was for the MBP’s, now seeing that the latest round of with the M1 Pro and Max chips looks more similar to pre-unibody MBP’s, which I would doubt was a JI design.

If the "extra thickness" (what was it, a couple of hundreds of an inch on each side?) of the new MacBook Pro keeps people from cracking their screens (and then complaining about it), all the better. Ive's thinness (no pun intended) was his undoing. As many have already said, form should not consistently drive function.

Really, my 2 cameras use SD cards and most IIRC still use them.

The new pro is lovely.

Talk about odd bedfellows, a haute couture maven that knows likely knows nothing about tech interviewing a quintessential tech nerd that undoubtedly has to be reminded to not mix plaids and stripes and wear matching socks.

That was the goal though, "thinness at all cost". The innovations and designs he came up with to make it thinner can't be denied, but at the sacrifice of usability. Taking away ports because "it didn't fit into his design or vision" is bad design. Yes, there's a lot of thought that goes into it, but it boils down to removing things because it couldn't get it thinner and thinner. That's how we ended up with the disastrous butterfly keyboard. The removal of connectivity to go to "dongletown". The "10 hour battery life" constant. They made their power consumption better and better, but took away more and more battery space to...again, say it with me...make it thinner. I mean, thinness was part of their presentation and advertising! "The thinnest MacBooks yet!".

So no, this isn't reactionary. This is form getting in the way of function. Ive is a brilliant designer, but obviously he needs supervision.
Yes, and Cook is clearly not a capable supervisor like Jobs was. That's the actual problem. Now we have function back, but at the cost of form. Ives, supervised by Jobs, was the right balance. RIP.

In 5 to 10 years I would agree to you – but if you are working hard with your MBs and need exchange with others (customers, clients) you never receive or pass over an USB-C-Stick – you take the smallest and cheapest available:

USB-A 3.1 – right?! ?

Maybe you prefer to use an adapter for this purpose ? – don't forget to pass one to customer/client, too?

If you would see Ive's MBP in Modern Art Museum with plugged in all these horrible adapters people needed to keep in basket...
You'd probably be arguing the same thing about floppy drives when Apple killed those off.

One thing this company has been very forward looking and instrumental in is killing off old standards before everyone else was willing to admit they need to go but precisely when someone needs to step up and rip off the bandaid.

Good riddance to USB A. It's over. You're never getting it on another Apple laptop again. Accept it.

Don't like Ive's designs? Fine, let us know why. Don't agree with his choices on features? Okay, give us your thoughts. Making fun of his (or anyone's) looks or the way he speaks is childish and unnecessary. Maybe I'm in the minority in thinking this way, but it's not why I read the posts on Macforums.

Wanna laugh at something? Compare your bank account with his.
Well said. Out of interest...and sad I know but I looked at many of those who just slate Ive for what seems like following the crowd. It turns out that the vast majority, above 90% joined MacRumors in 2015 onwards. Now, I don't mean to use a sheep dip approach here but based on that figure, it's possible to make an educated guess that many have no idea about Apple's history and what Ive brought to the table. He was one of the pillars that brought Apple to where it is today.
And the funniest thing....all those complaining are using the exact products that Ive designed and have his legacy written all over them!

I agree. Ever since Jony left, they started reusing their old designs, and it looks like they're clueless on how to design a good looking device.

(thought it looks like the customers benefit since the new macbooks might be ugly but they brought back features that wouldn't be possible on the thin macbooks prior to them)
Ugly is relative. The leaving if I’ve gave better usability of the products, mainly better battery life due to, simply, larger shells for larger battery. That alone imo is a net positive. I mean the iPhone can’t be stuck in mediocre iPhone 6s level of battery life forever.

As for the MacBook Pro, Apple seems pretty clear on the segment separation. Want a thin-n-light? Get a MacBook Air. The MacBook Pro shouldn’t be aiming to become a MacBook Air in the first place.

Funny enough the old designs were also made by I’ve team and himself. Kind dumb comments have been posted about his work … oh the old designs … hey … same person kekeke …

PS: The current iOS design also started with him … hehe I remember people hating it back then. The current MBP are simply a thick block of metal … if the Apple logo wasn’t there could pass by any company with little design budget …. I bet it was not his decision to remove magsafe … even though the bar design was … heck even the Apple Watch crown was … even the great designers fail … so what?
