Together, Zorkendorfer and De Iuliis have worked at Apple for a combined 35 years....

Combining years of service isn’t meaningful. There’s no doubt they contributed greatly, but the look and feel of the iPhone was set long before it debuted.

Some niche apps, like GarageBand, surely has a smaller audience, but they’re definitely not absent. I know many musicians who use it. A lot.

So are you implying that your musicians are part of that smaller audience of nil? I know many musicians who prefer to use Logic for obvious reasons. Garage Band is for quick proof of concept or layouts

Apple’s office applications may not be the industry standard, but they’re better than most, and I’ve used iWork since launch. They’re hardly useless. And they’re free.

They are not better than Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, and Google Docs. So are you saying they are better than the bottom tier office apps?

What are you expecting them to ‘design’ that would be totally different? The Apple Watch, the AirPods and the HomePod are all recent designs, do those count? I’d say they do.
Is that the late Rich Piana you have as your avatar?

Design isn't putting lipstick on a pig.

However, it also requires a realistic attitude, since current technology might not be able to do what your design needs to work. You work with what you have and aim for the future.

That said, the only really new hardware designs Apple has pumped out in recent memory are AirPods and the HomePod. They do know how to pump out apple watch bands, though. Those have gone through more refreshes than any other Apple product in history.

I use Logic as a DAW. GarageBand is indispensable for this reason: it’s mobile, whereas Logic is not, since his point revolved around iOS, not macOS.

Apple’s iWork suite is beautiful, intelligent and robust, but doesn’t play nice with other operating systems or office suites, so it’s either Apple or somebody else. With Google Docs you have to always be connected. With Office you must pay for upgrades and feature-inclusive updates, and is clunky. OpenOffice is cool, but it’s also the simple GIMP of office suites, to each their own.

The vast majority of MacBook Pro users have no problem with the keyboard. Many say it's the best keyboard they've ever used. A great example of overblown forum talk.
I used to have a list of sources a mile long to paste in these forums for people who were still in denial that the keyboard problems existed (news articles from reputable sources, technical analyses from technicians, class action law suits, petitions, you name it). However, I didn't think it was necessary at this point as any reasonable person not living under a rock can see that there is an issue. Apple's own repair programs on this keyboard could be considered enough to validate the problem.

Ironically I just went into a Best Buy and typed on their display MBP and the B key worked intermittently. After pressing it a few times it cleared itself up. That's textbook keyboard failure for this keyboard.

I can't believe people are still in denial at this point.
[doublepost=1556244469][/doublepost]Apple's unsolicited obsession with thinness is clear evidence that Apple values "form over function". Do we need to list the potential issues with having a chassis that's too thin? Anyone want to start with thinness and TDP?

The keyboards are bad because they were engineered poorly, not because Apple values "form over function." It's possible to have both form and function as is evident in most of Apple's other products.

The Galaxy Fold represents a new paradigm in pocket computer man-machine interface. This isn’t a home run. It’s a whole new sport. And only Samsung could have envisioned, designed, engineered, and ship such a product. Apple on the other hand are incapable of creating such a device. Samsung focuses on novelty. Apple focuses on pragmatic design. Frankly, no one cares for 99% of Apple’s first-party apps. The vast majority of people have crApple folders of all the useless Apple apps: Reminders, News, Podcasts, Books, Stocks, Health, Home, Wallet, Measure, TV, iMovie, GarageBand, Music Memos, Clips, Pages, Keynote, Numbers.

Apple needs to focus on important design aspects: Kill the TrueDepth housing. Kill it. No one cares about FaceID. Kill the camera bump. It is superfluous. You might ask what natural law exists that says “smartphones” need to have a flat back. Well. There is none. But it’s ugly. For example. Look at the safety mechanism on the trigger on a Glock. It’s hideous. Yeah, okay, they claim it’s additional safety. Who cares? It is ugly. A trigger on a gun should be one smooth piece. That is good design. Trust me, I’ve designed a great layout for my Twitch page so you can say that I have an “eye for design."

Literally everything in this post is bull.

But to get to the heart of the matter, I believe these resignations are due to one thing and one thing only: The Samsung Fold. I find it commendable that these gentlemen quit in response to the Galaxy Fold (along with other Samsung innovations). They have my respect.

Resigned because of the Fold? People at Samsung should resign for releasing that POS. Everyone at Apple was either laughing at Samsung for feeling pity for Samsung.

I’ve never had a problem with their butterfly keyboard since their release. I physically don’t slam my fingers on the keys to type, or work in filthy environments either.

I have a friend that types hard, though, and he’s had issues. He’d also eat while using it. Once it was fixed, he spilled a little water on it. Fixed it again, and kept wiping his oily face, then typed on it, then ate chips around it, and had to be opened up a third time. Those keys were slick and nasty.

I can see how they’re fragile at times, but I don’t think Apple went into the design process thinking the general user base of multi-thousand dollar laptops would be clumsy, slamming-to-type slobs, so in a way it is indeed an oversight made by the design team.

Maybe this is the start of the purge that is needed?

Most likely the need for new blood, fresh ideas can help or better perspective. I’m more worried of resistance of said fresh ideas from Ive though.

Just as long as they do NOT hire:
That Microsoft employee that created Windows Tile junk!
Google designers responsible for Pixel phone!!

I wonder if morale is declining somewhat. The new iPad Pro looks nice but is flawed structurally and is way overpriced. How did it get to market being as weak and prone to bending as it is? You could say the same for the Butterfly keyboard and a myriad of other questionable design decisions.

To me this suggests either a level of incompetence, but much more likely overbearing pressure to cut costs, or even (potentially), to deliberately degrade their longevity as a form of planned obsolescence.

Elaborate please? Has there been something published about their motivations corroborating your belief? No challenge here...just wondering if I missed it.

The Galaxy Fold represents a new paradigm in pocket computer man-machine interface.

A new paradigm is the difference between a Razr v3 and an iPhone. A new paradigm would be embedding the device in your eye/eyewear and using gestures and eye movements to manipulate the UI. The galaxy fold is a phablet that folds in half...just like a paper notebook does.

It's a neat trick, once they get it to work. But a new paradigm? Nope.

So they have a design team after all.
Started to doubt it after seeing the recent iPhone’s protruding design rumours

The triple lens protruding camera design looks like a tiny little ceramic top stove for cooking very very tiny little eggs. Now if this is not cute, I don’t know what is

Yeah the iphone is getting uglier and uglier. I'm guessing all the 'fresh talent' is working for the competition, probably good to clean out some of the old and hire some people with fresh design shops. Gold watches for rich guys is not going to cut it long term.

24 people and three have gone? Two refusing to say why... this doesn’t look very good..
I’m sure the other two might have personal reasons, such as starting a new venture or family things

Plus, do you have the media contacting you whenever you change jobs? Some of those guys are older and aren’t into the publicity game they like to play

I don't like the lens bump on the iPhones, just make the thing as thick as you need to house the lens; use the extra space for more memory or more battery.

I have not had issues yet on my work MBP with the butterfly design.2; but I know people who have. I tend to not get food or drinks near it either though. And at home it is hooked to a external monitor via TB3, so it stays closed 80% of the time.

That's a design choice that would be interesting to read about. There's no technical reason they couldn't make the phone flush with the camera; that was a design and/or marketing decision, pure and simple.

No it doesn't. It means releasing a defective product that tarnishes the Apple brand, like Apple Maps did when Forstall was in charge of it.

Thank you!
So many people here seems to believe that Scott’s only fault was not to sign the apology. When in fact his team released as product that dozens of employees must have known was not ready for release.
Either they did not dare to speak up or he did not care. Either or, it was his fault.
They were so correct in letting him go.

If they were responsible for keyboard, display cable and other issues, it's good that they are gone.
