I’m sure the other two might have personal reasons, such as starting a new venture or family things

Plus, do you have the media contacting you whenever you change jobs? Some of those guys are older and aren’t into the publicity game they like to play

That is a fair point you raise. Why are the media confronting them? I guess it must purely be because they are Apple and when it comes to design, they have a rather iconic reputation?
I was thinking was it part of an internal shuffle, which if it meant losing experienced people doesn’t seem very good and done for efficiency and cost cutting? I guess that’s what the media were trying to dig for?

that what happens to a company when you give "designers" which are not nearly really clever people too much power. not to mention an ceo who has no glue what tech is and loves hollywood more than tech enthuiasts

Damn! I can’t believe the amount of negative comments in here.
The design team at Apple has made some incredible products during the last years - I personally think they are beautiful and far ahead of what others are doing.
Is this how you guys go about your life; bashing and pissing on other peoples accomplishments and decisions.
...ok, need to calm my self...

what are you doing dude, you are bashing us ... for saying the truth you dont wanna hear - hows your life? seems quite wasted when you are a fan of designer who dont design anymore!

Its Ive that needs to go. I am sure his Steve Jobs mentality of needing to be the center of attention leaves others there feeling pointless.

You have no idea what you are talking about.
Yes I read it wrong. “A combined 35 years”

They did some good choices and some unnecessary bad choices too.
I love AirPods but then I cannot defend the mouse with changing port on the bottom. I love MacBook, but cannot defend the butterfly keyboard. And so on and so forth. Such as life

Jony: “So how can you contribute to improve upon Apple’s iPhone design in the coming years?
Clueless Candidate: “Add more cameras?”
Tim: *Explodes in a paroxysm of excitement*
Clueless Candidate: “...but there are also other oppor...”
Jony: “See you on Monday, mate!”

Ah, you beat me to it. Immediately on reading the article, I wanted to vent my frustration at this pathetic "form ahead of function", that robs us of good keyboards, and stops them giving matte anti-glare screens to those that need them.

Good riddance to these people. Glad their names are published. Name and shame them.
What if those three actually wanted to do their best in design and fix things, but someone (aka Jony Ive) said no to them. Don't assume the worst about people when you don't know anything about the situation.

Farmer be like: What's a lamb?

But then even serious question arises. What’s a lamb design?

Btw way, the “what’s a computer” ad from Apple was great. A boy (or girl, sorry couldn’t honestly recognize the gender) sitting on a tree, using iPad, having a well designed case, resting the Apple pen, where it was designed to rest. Behind the ear. And I thought that little details matter

I actually like my iPad better than my iPhone.

iPad is by far my favorite Apple product.

Sure but iPad wasn't and isn't ground breaking. (It's basically a huge iphone.) Apple hasn't introduced such a product in 12 years. They can't even bring a wireless charger or a MacPro to their customers in a reasonable timeframe.

Zorkendorfer told The Wall Street Journal that he decided to leave Apple to spend time with his family, while the other two declined to comment

Sounds like a corporate bust up to me. Perhaps the pressure is on in the design dept?

Did laugh about Zorkendorfer's comment... "Leaving to spend time with his family" has become a joke here in the UK as it's generally used by politicians who've had to suddenly leave their jobs for reasons that often don't involve their family wanting them back.

Haha yeah, I got a bit carried way :)
On with life!

Ah, ok. I accept your point. I agree - Jony could have been the culprit.

Engineering hasn't won an argument at Apple in years.
Neither has the marketing department.

Marketing: We have this great selling point, its called mag safe and stops accidents.
Design team: Nah, we have to go thinner - lets get rid of magsafe.
Marketing: ok how about a replaceable battery like we did years ago?
Design team: Nah, we have to go thinner, lets glue that mother f. in.
Marketing: ok, how about letting people put in bigger storage, more ram we could say the macbook is configurable.
Design team: Nah, we have to go thinner, lets solder the buggers on to the motherboard. Then every fix is the same - replace just one component - the motherboard, then it doesn't take a genius to work out whats gone wrong. So we can slim down the genius team.
Marketing: You design guys are f*!k&@g everything up, I have an idea, since you ain't putting out things we can market, lets slim your team down.

I think many engineers and designers have moved on, its just that we don't hear of it. Unimproved macmini, imac, the still-waiting mac pro, bad mouse design with the plug underneath, bad keyboard, etc. Something major has changed under Tim Cook way beyond just three designers leaving.

Above in the thread people were surprised that Apple still has a design team. Personally, I'm more surprised that there still is an engineering team. But I doubt that they are working on new COMPUTERS.

Don’t worry, don’t panic, this will allow Apple to bring in some bad blood. Get rid of the protruding camera PLEEEEEEEEASE!

So they have a design team after all.
Started to doubt it after seeing the recent iPhone’s protruding design rumours

The triple lens protruding camera design looks like a tiny little ceramic top stove for cooking very very tiny little eggs. Now if this is not cute, I don’t know what is

The vast majority of people put their phone in a case so it simply doesn't matter if it protrudes.

I miss the day when Apple was doing some very clever engineering and design.

It does matter. This is a huge problem. It’s unresolved. It looks cheap.

That's a design choice that would be interesting to read about. There's no technical reason they couldn't make the phone flush with the camera; that was a design and/or marketing decision, pure and simple.

I'd bet the metallic oval sticking out from the iphone's back keeps out glare like the protrusions on DSLR lenses. Takes better photos but it's lazy design and lazy engineering. They can only get away with it because it's apple.

Nope.
  • It doesn’t matter (200+ million customers per year disagree with you).
  • It’s not even a small problem—it’s a complete non-issue (for 200+ million/year obvious reasons).
  • It actually is resolved. Apple’s fine with the bump, and so are it’s actual customers (no one cares what a few dozen Apple-hate posters on MR forums think lol. You’ve got zero power or control over this situation; sorry).
  • It looks fine. Expensive even.

Yes, it would be awesome to lose one of the best designers in the world, the one responsible for all Apple products you use and presumably care about because you’re here. The one all other companies try to compete against :p

You're being sarcastic but he's actually destroying the company. Condescending tongue emoji.
