Aaaargh...choices. Should I get rid of my iPad 3 and upgrade ?

Absolutely.

I already sold my iPad 3 yesterday..

The iPad 5 is going to run circles around a 3.

----------

I totally agree with you. From an engineering perspective, everything smaller should be more expensive. But that's not how everyday people think about tech.

I'll give you an example. I used to do photography. The bigger your camera, the more professional people think you are. An old bulky camera is way more impressive than a more advanced but compact unit.

Also, bigger tablets have bigger screens. This is the most visible area for the consumer and it costs more as the size increases. Ergo, Apple can charge more for a bigger iPad.

Tablets don't fit into what you're saying.. The bigger screen is going to cost more to make and ship. Along with the fact that the bigger iPad has a better processor and camera.

THIS. Some of us just want a smaller screen. Why should be have to sacrifice specs? As far as I'm concerned they should all just be called "iPad" and be differentiated only by their size (7" and 10"). This will be even more logical now that the two sizes will have the same form factor. People talk about cannibalization. Does the 13" rMBP cannibalize 15" sales? If so, Apple still has both.

This. I can understand having a "pro" and non "pro" version of a product but I don't understand why screen size should dictate that. Unless Apple is able to get away with higher margins on the 9.7" device and to get the same margins on the 7.9" device they'd have to raise the price? If you look at the current iPad mini compared to the full size iPad is it really missing anything other than retina display and the hardware to drive it? At least from a feature standpoint it seems to be on par. To me Apple has never positioned the full size iPad as a "pro" device compared to the mini. So why should it get features that the mini doesn't?

----------

Yeah I wonder how they're gonna position the Mini too. My guess is that it'll be different from 5s and 5c. For iPhone, it's clear that the 5c is the inferior version. By buying the 5c, the user is essentially saying "I can't afford the premium model." It takes away the cool factor.
You think everyone who bought a 5C only did so because they couldn't afford the 5S? I think that's a sweeping generalization.

It performs poorly and is buggy; it was a rush release

It performs great on my iPhone 5. I haven't seen anything, in my use of iOS 7, that indicates any bugs yet. How about being more specific on what you mean by "performing poorly and is buggy".

I have a Nexus 7 (2013). While it has great stats and even looks pretty slick, I never use it over my iPad 2. It just isn't as pleasant an experience. I don't have an iPad mini, but I can't imagine the result would be any different.

I love my iPad 2 as well, I would just like something smaller and can't do a non retina after using the wifes iPad 3 and my nexus 4.

I can't imagine them releasing a non retina though, that would be suicide.

First, Apple strangely delayed the iPhone 5s/5c sales numbers to match the day of the Microsoft Surface 2 keynote (released the numbers 2 hours before it).
Now Apple makes a keynote for the iPad the very same day Surface 2 is shipping. ¿Coincidence much?

I thought Apple was proud of being "above the competitors" like in "we-don't-pay-attention-to-them", something like Nintendo (for better or worse, haha).

It seems NOT. :D

Seriously, it seems they really wants to crash MS's party. I don't remember Apple doing these things before (maybe I just forgot?). Makes me feel a little bit sad, but I guess big companies are always trying to destroy or annoy each other at any time they can.

EDIT: I forgot 22 is also Nokia's tablets and phablets keynote, hehe.

Can't wait for a 32" Maxi-Pad.

Id hate to see the lady that has to use a 32" MaxiPad.

Errr...wait..... oh, not that kind of MaxiPad :D

As for the iPad launch? Great - I just need to know the specs of the 5th gen full size unit and that will determine whether I get one of those OR just get a very good deal on a refurbed 4th gen iPad. My wallet would appreciate the latter option, of course but my menatl psyche wants the newest and greatest!

I am waiting for Apple to confirm this.

I feel like a broken record, always saying "only Apple can confirm Apple doings/releases" but no one seems to listen.

Fine ok, you all win. If you want to believe others rumours (quite plausible rumours at times) as fact, go ahead. Your loss.

It is not a rumor, Jim is used by Apple as an unofficial spokesman, because of that, he has NEVER been wrong with his NOPE or YEP responses. Its silly to argue every time Jim says yep or nope that its only a rumor, when we know he is right, he's not guessing, he has been told.

Jim is used by Apple as an unofficial spokesman,
"Used by Apple" is not the same as "works for Apple".
"unofficial spokesman" is not the same as "official confirmation".

I don't care how many "yeps" he says. It's still unofficial as you said. I take what he says as a plausible rumour though. Why use an official mouthpiece instead of just saying it yourself (you being Apple in this instance).

That's why I wait for Apple to speak. Then it is official.

It it a crime to wait for official confirmation (Ie Apple to speak) before believing something 100%? If it is then sue me cause I am guilty.

Very good point. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Apple come out and get rid of the "mini" designation altogether and refer to the two sizes as the 8" and 10" iPads. And if rumors of a future 12" version are true, it would fit in perfectly. Besides, they wouldn't really consider calling the 12" an iPad Maxi, would they?

The rMBP 13 and rMBP 15 have different specs...the 15" can be spec'd higher and has a quad-core vs. dual-core processor. There are differences in the non-retina flavors as well. So if you want quad-core you aren't getting an (r)MBP 13.

As much as I'd love an identical specs for iPad & iPad Mini (and iPhone 5S and 5C for that matter) I don't think it's gonna happen. Would 100% love to be proved wrong though (for iPads anyway) - makes my buying decision a thousand times easier. Not just to save a couple of bucks - I just like the smaller size of the mini but want it to last at least 2-3 years worth of iOS updates so don't want year-old HW either.

Can we please just say yes it's not official but it's almost 99% sure it's true? This is just getting annoying geez.

So many people are wishing for retina mini it is unbelievable. The whole peninsula of South Korea wants it also. Yep. There will be a shortage.

32' huh ?

Say goodbye to portable computing....

Those drawing board massive ipad video was hilarious... People like doing things by pen and paper. Why force it on them ?

I hope they give is the classic "and one more thing " and show a picture of a MacBook Pro with haswell !!!! Ahhhhh yyyeeeaahhhh!!!!

I agree it's getting annoying. But someone has to say it. It can't be left unsaid, it's better that everyone knows.

Not sure how a speed bump is "one more thing" worthy, but I suspect the Haswell MBP will be a press release announcement like the iMac was.

apple event

What would make this event even better is if Tim Cook stood up on stage and announced that they actually have the iPhone 5s in stock and that it will be available today. How amazing would that be?

Everyone DOES already know it isn't 100% cold hard fact. But everyone other than you accepts that it is as close to fact as it can get without the official announcement at this point.

I don't believe A7 in new mini.... No differentiation. 6X I'd believe.

Sonny Dickson leaked the specs saying that the iPad mini 2 has touch ID with an A7 and 1gb of RAM. The iPad 5 has touchID, with A7A, G6630 GPU, and 2Gb of RAM. I would say he is right, and he always has been...
He is the one that leaks the pictures.

No. Not with regards to procs.
iPad 3 had A5X, pushed retina fine, iPad 4 has A6X.. pushes retina fine. iPad 5 will likely have A7X & push retina fine.
Knowing Apple could VERY successfully utilize ANY of those chips in a retina mini, I think it is the silliest of wishful thinking that they would choose A7X.

The A5X never pushed retina fine. It was 2X faster the the iPad 2 but pushed 4 times the pixels. Anandtech shown screenshots between the iPad 2,3 and 4 and when zoomed in, the iLad 3 was not actually displaying full retina because it couldn't process fast enought to keep up with the display. The iPad mini will be A7. The iPad mini is not a cheap iPad, it is an iPad for someone who needs there iPad to be smaller; that's it. They will put the A7 in it with the G6430 as it can push retina as the GPU outputs at 76.8Gflops, the same as the iPad 4's GPU. And they would want to make the transition to 64bit on it as well.

The iPad 5 will have an A7X with 2Gb of RAM (with the mini 2 having 1Gb) and a G6630 GPU perfroming around 205Gflops.

I gotta admit..! You are fairly convincing... this is going to be (yet another) really fun & interesting Apple event. :0)
Obv, not EVERYBODY can be correct. I'm hella interested in Apple's roadmap...
