Ignoring the mask issue which is a BIG issue.

Face ID isn't even good. There are so many situations where it doesn't work. I like to lay in bed and stretch out for my phone while still laying down, there are angles where Face ID just doesn't work. Moreover my head might be partially covered by a blanket or a pillow, I still want to look at my phone but I can't.

desperately need this feature. All Samsung phones contains it
Why do we desperately need the feature? If one can't use Face ID, one can still enter the passcode manually which everyone was doing before Face ID and Touch ID. I think a lot of people have gotten lazy and just can't be bothered to enter the passcode they chose for their phone. If we were assigned a long passcode with our phone, I could understand the numerous posts saying we desperately need .....

As long as folks are wearing masks in stores and Apple's using FaceID only, people can't use ApplePay for purchases. I bet they're wishing they'd put fingerprint in earlier.
Sure you can use Apple Pay. The FaceID is nicer of course but all you have to do is enter your passcode, sure a little inconvenient, but I do it all the time. No biggie. No, I do not miss the fingerprint sensor because if you live in a cold climate you are having to pull a glove off to use TouchID at this time of the year.

Then go buy a Samsung phone. I really do not care what Samsung offers or does not offer. There are a ton of people I’m sure that loves their Galaxy or whatever but my wife tried a Galaxy S3 or 4, what a nightmare piece of crap that was. She got an iPhone as her next smartphone and has never looked back. That was our one and only experience with Samsung.

Has Apple finally realised they went too far in some design choices for their products.

The return of more ports and MagSafe to MacBooks and now the return of Touch ID.

I haven’t been excited for upcoming Apple products for a while but these latest rumours and the renewed focus on Mac has me excited.

I want a new Apple display and half size Mac Pro for my next setup.

Having both in the iPhone is the best option. Whether you use it or not doesn’t mean others won’t. Having Face and Touch ID means easy unlocking in all situations.

I remember a few years back. I think before iPhone X Apple was rumored to be working on this to include in it along side Face ID, but they likely scraped it due to cost.

finally 4 years later...I don’t think they will do it LOL

Personally I prefer capacitive sensors. Optical fingerprint sensor is slower and less accurate, and requires more precise positioning of the finger. Imo just go with the power button touch ID.

I've been using Face ID for the past couple months, neither of them is better than the other in all situations. When laying on certain angles or for payments I would say Touch ID is better. But at the right angle and unobscured Face ID is effortless, don't have to move your finger to the button.

In the age of masks. I REALLY miss touch id. Such a hassle right now.

I said this right at the beginning of the COVID crisis and people here ridiculed me. Now they've figured out how useful an iPhone 8 Plus can be. I know iPhone sales are doing well, but if the COVID issue drags on, this will be necessary and sales will drop. As it stands now, with new strains coming out, I don't think we're going to be totally over COVID by next fall, in better shape of course, but still with mask wearing mostly which severely hampers usage of the current iPhones. This is why I'm sticking with my iPhone 8 Plus still.
Fix it Apple.

Your lips move but I can't hear what you are saying with a mask on.
When I was child, I caught a fleeting glimpse, out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone, I cannot put my finger on it now,
But if TouchID returns, I'll be able to use my fingers once again,
And I'll be made to be very happy once again .... Truly.

Another vote for adding touch ID to the home button. Having just upgraded a few weeks ago to the iPad Air 4, I can say I like it a lot and it works quite well. Why not just add that to the 13?

Would it be that hard to just have face id work with your mask on too?
because case?

Looking forward to this feature...hope screen protectors won't interfere with its reliability/functionality.

I'd love to see this - would like to finally be able to unlock my phone in any position or angle so I can just glance at it again. It's really annoying to have to actually pick it up and hold it in front of my face.

I don't have high hopes for it appearing on a next gen Mini however, I don't want another oversized phone like my X.

this is cool. you can debate about what's better/more useful between FaceID and TouchID, but as a customer I would never complain about having 2 high-quality security features at my disposal, even if i don't ever use one of them. the more the merrier.

I wonder if implementing touch ID in the home button will probably be more reliable and take up less internal space in the phone. I'm no engineer though...just a thought that occurred to me.

There is one other way to use ApplePay, without any issue of having to use TouchID or FaceID - an Apple Watch. I have my series 5, and always forget I can pay this way. Would be helpful if Apple allowed Wallet to be a complication, not that it’s that hard to push the crown in and scroll down to Wallet...
This is why it pays off to read the manual ;) Double clicking the other button (not the crown) opens Wallet, same as double clicking "lock" on iPhone does it.

I just put my password in. My password is pretty long, so it is a bit of a nuisance, but I still do use it.
i'm not claiming to be a scientist, maybe you are one, could you really get enough datapoints for an accurate id on simply the eyes? sounds a bit far fetched that it could work. The only time I need to unlock phone with mask on is inside grocery store when I am using notes for a shopping list. Pretty minor inconvenience to type my password a few times. I tried setting the time out longer and tapping the screen ever so often that works too. I guess I'm not willing to give up security for convenience. FaceID is so much better than finger print scanning, remember everyone who used to complain about wearing their gloves. LOL
I do it for grocery lists too. But there are also apps like banking and the target app that I use semi-often. If I want to get money out of an ATM I need faceid (or my password); I could use my apple watch but I am not the best at wearing that all the time when I work from home now and forget to put it on when I leave, and that is my fault. If I want to pay with redcard, I need faceid (or a password). If my phone is locked and I need an ATM I need to do my password just once. If it is locked and I am paying at target, it's twice.

I guess the level that it inconveniences a person depends on how often they are shipping. I shop for and feed five people, so I find myself running to the store for multiple things. I have also found myself using curbside as often as humanly possibly, partially to avoid crowds, but also partially because its legitimately faster so long as I don't go during rush hour.

It reflects how good Apple did in making the unlocking process seamless on iPhones, that people are complaining about it when there are changes. :D

I myself prefer the Android pattern code than a PIN code, but apparently it's not as secure as recent Android will require PIN code for biometric fallback.
