The design doesn't bother me all that much. I'm really curious about the additional antennas though.

I have no need for this as my 6 is usually above 80% by the time my 18 hour waking day is done, but I think it's pretty lame you can't get a full charge out of this. Clearly there is enough space for them to have put a battery in big enough to charge the phone completely.

But I have a suspicion that the reason they didn't do this, and allowed the hump to protrude rather than just having a uniformly fat case, is again, thinness - they don't want people to think the phone is fat, so they want people to see that the extra bulk is indeed, extra.
How is that possible? By the time I get back from lunch my phone is already being recharged. The battery is horrific and Apple's skinny fetish need to go away like skinny jeans.

so $100 gets you a 99c rubber case, a $5 battery, and one of these signal boosters in one?

gee, thanks apple.

It really won't improve it that much it seems to provide extra signal gain the case might be losing due to insulating the signal. I'd imagine it would be rather identical to the phone if the phone were naked without the case, which seems to be Jony's ideal preference with a phone. I find it hard to believe his team designed something so fugly. I honestly don't care if the phone was even 3 mm thicker, provided the lens is no longer protruding and gives outstanding battery life.

Same here. Too bad they don't make just an antenna case for the 6S+. I could always use stronger signal, assuming it works.

Having trawled through the posts in this thread, I can rest easily knowing that all the expert designers and engineers who have posted here will be heading straight out to gain employment at Apple and ensure such things are not released in the future.
Although the amount of people who have commented on what Steve Jobs would have or haven't done concerns me, because as only those that know or worked with him would actually know, it begs the question why you all didn't use your apple employment or personal connections to discuss this with the powers that be. If you were so close to Steve, how could you just ignore it?

I would be interested in this if it had also been released for the 6S+ as this would be great for when I am travelling. I can live with the aesthetics of it as it would simply be thrown in in such a usage case where battery life has become 'the' most important factor.

Perhaps this is part of Apple's strategy to make an even thinner iPhone in the future. They can make an iPhone 7 at half the current thickness of the 6s but giving it a battery that lasts 2 hours without an Apple external battery pack.

This is ridiculous. Fix the internal battery and make the iPhone a little thicker if necessary but don't use these crappy workarounds.

Absolutely! I am not an iPhone owner. I have never liked the phone because it is just too limiting; the OS is limiting and the design of the phone is limiting (lack of removable battery, no expandable storage, etc.). One of the things I have always hated was the thought of an external battery pack, which became popular because of iPhones. It is work around for a poor design. Why not just make it so the battery is removable? Or, here is a thought.. why not put a bigger battery in the phone?

Samsung has gone down the same path as Apple. Their new phones don't have removable batteries. The only saving grace for Samsung is that their phones have an ultra power saving mode, *real* quick charging, and all have better battery life than the iPhone (which goes to show you how far Apple has slipped in recent years).

I think the Verge summed it up well with the title on their video:
Apple’s new $99 iPhone battery case is a design embarrassment

Well, going to theverge.com without adblocker running shows that the pot shouldnt be calling the kettle anything.

Make one of these for the 6 Plus and you could have enough battery for a day at Disney.

Perhaps but the Verge isn't charging a hundred dollars, nor have they ever touted their design prowess. Apple's reputation is based on beautifully designed products. This product fails to live up to that however.

I wouldn't mind it. to be honest it would just hang out in my purse until I needed power that being said I wish they would make more options for the 6plus there are times where I won't plug in my phone and I need a extra charge. Yes there are other options on the market, but eh nothing really calls to me. This one isn't so bad

I asked Apple Support if there was a way to unsee this case. "Sarah" recommended viewing cat videos on YouTube. It worked! Another win for Apple Support!

I'm actually really impressed by the use I get from my 6S battery. But not at all impressed by this lump -- it really is reminiscent of the mid-90s Apple styling (think Powerbook Duo, Performa 5440 and/or Newton)

At first glance I laughed. But after reading the review the design really grew on me. The corners and the smooth surface of the case matches exactly with the phone. One of the strongest reasons why I'm using an iPhone now is how sleek the body of the phones are and how rounded the corners are to the touch.

This case looks bad to the eye but if you keep looking you'll simply want to touch it and that's amazing. Cases are supposed to protect and feel nice to the touch.

The case respects all the time spent on designing the phone while providing more function. Because we all have commented on how Otterboxes or other cases throws off the size and shape of the phone it surrounds.

It's possible because I'm not glued to my phone constantly.

My phone is currently sitting on my desk next to me, other than replying to an email and checking a couple things and taking a quick call, I haven't used it and it's been off the charger since 6:45 this morning. Battery is at 96%. I have a job that requires my brain and full attention from the time I get here to the time I leave, so I'm not sitting on my phone playing games or dinking off. The phone is a tool for me, not an entertainment device; as such, it is never in my hands being used for hours on end constantly. I also have full brightness, and wifi and bluetooth on. Your usage may vary.

With that case, I bet I could go two full weeks between charges, easy.

"Best iPhone case you can get for the price" is a very subjective qualifier. And the Verge's review mistakenly says it isn't when they can't authoritatively back it up. Is it pretty. Not IMO. But others might think it's nice. Does it provide the most charge? Again, no. But what if you don't need "the most charge?"

Here's something that it provides that nobody else's battery case does: A Lightning plug. This is something that I have wanted in a battery case for years. So, if I were to buy a battery case I would determine that this case is the best one out there. For me.

The Verge erroneously made an objective statement, that it is not the best battery case for the money, when there is no way to make that statement objectively.

That's like me saying that the Apple leather case is the best case for the money over an Otterbox, just because I hate the looks of the Otterbox and like the looks of the Apple case. But the fact is that some people need and want the Otterbox, so that makes it the best case for them.

It's not going to win any beauty contests for sure but I think most of the reactions are over-the-top. It's an optional accessory that most people aren't going to buy. And according to Joanna Stern at the WSJ (certainly no Apple fan girl) it's nicer to hold in the hand than other battery cases.
I expect a lot better from Apple. At least smooth out the bump! Keep it flat on the back—just ease the transition.

My theory is that they wanted it to look thin around the edges. They want people who see it to not think the iPhone is actually that thick. This makes it look more like an obvious "backpack" to the iPhone. I still don't like it, but can kind of understand that point of view. But most people know the iPhone is really thin—even those without one.
