How this passed apple "design standards" is beyond reality. You say you design phones to be thin and thinner and thinner but yet you sacrifice battery life for thinness and then release a really fugly case like this to address battery issues? Why not design an iPhone that isn't so thin in the first place. What a hypocrite company. Keep making stupid thin phones and then come out with a stupid looking case to boost battery life.

Next iPhone 7, please please please release a phone that is not thinner but more battery life and that would be awesome. This is as terrible as the swiss cheese holes case for their iPhone 5C models. I still do not understand how this gets approved at apple. It looks like something eddie cue would design.

Form follows function. If there doesn't need to be extra plastic casing, don't include it. The just outlines the shape of the battery, nothing more. I like it.
Yeah because it's so hard to make a thinner battery that spans more over the form of the iPhone...
Here is more: form follows manufacturing price. They probably are using same batteries as other iOS device and saving on cost due to mass production.

?? You gotta be the biggest fan of apple to say this is any good - form follows function I can also strap a mac pro trash can to 12v car battery with a power inverter and make it a portable system. this is not how apple designs are like.

I would have loved the extended battery life but not if it's going to make my phone look clunky and ugly! I'd rather carry a charger with me in my bag and find an outlet wherever I'm at!

This product is for people who want an Apple case that gives more battery. Not everyone has access to an out,et at all times.

It's weird how battery performance depends so much on cell and 3G reception. Where I live now, my iPhone 4S always has around 80% battery left at the end of a day. I used to live somewhere else and it would die halfway through the day all the time.

Glad I have been going with the + models instead, love the battery life, gets me through 2 full days with the battery low power mode on.

On the side note, I really expected Apple to do it way better than anyone ever before especially on the connector part, every case extends the iPhone length and it absolutely locks fugly.

They could have integrated some sort of magnet based charger like ZNAPS into the bottom that went into the case with one of the thin flex cables.

I'm not sure if anyone has checked out Znaps, but its like magsafe for iPhone, it works very well and I think it could have provided a good design choice for iPhones and then you simply add the adapter to Lightning cable and connect via magnet to charge case+phone as the current would flow from the cable>case>iPhone.

Everything about The Verge is an embarrassment. I guess this will tide the outrage crowd over for the holidays...
Regardless of what you think of the verge, they are 100% spot on. No lamenting Jobs, but Apple is going the wrong way, fast.

The iPhone and iPad are well designed, but the watch and is stupid case are awful. Apple should have put more effort into the device if they wanted improved battery life.

Apple just gave "FUGLY" a new definition: Functional, but ugly.

No, Apple just gave "Function over Form" a new definition. Where are those guys who complained endlessly that Apple always goes for "Form over Function" now?

I disagree with watch. I think it's smart device, extremely useful, beautiful, well crafted, well designed, subtle and minimalist and yet powerful; and I love it to death.

Also a big, fat square. The circles are just far superior and better looking.

The Tag Heuer watch is an actual well designed smartwatch.

They're right. No way in hell would Steve Jobs ever let this thing be released. I'm not typically the one to say that.. but no, no, no way would this thing ever make it past the first visual inspection if he were around.

I agree that the design is not typical Apple. But one have to remember there is not much permutation in there to design battery pack to start with. Apple position this as accessories to people who consider battery life of their iPhone insufficient (perhaps due to the nature of their job). It's not a product they want to sell for masses, it's targeting for a more specific market. I am happy they give that option at least. I view this item as similar as Apple cases, they are plain in design, they are more of necessities than appearances.

I personally can't stand Tag Heuer, they are too bulky and old fashion for my taste. On the other hand, Apple Watch does not scream "FAT" or "BIG" at all (which ironically what I use to describe tag Heuer). I like the way Apple Watch looks on my wrist. Simple, fresh, modern, elegant and clean.

You sound like you're trying to be Johnny Ive's intern or something.

Ives might be transitioning out of design, but geez has he no pride left in relation to what the design department comes up with , this thing is FUGLY. It's like a high school student designed it.

And £79.....come on Apple! The 80s called and want the spare battery on the back, returned!

At first glance I laughed. But after reading the review the design really grew on me. The corners and the smooth surface of the case matches exactly with the phone. One of the strongest reasons why I'm using an iPhone now is how sleek the body of the phones are and how rounded the corners are to the touch.

This case looks bad to the eye but if you keep looking you'll simply want to touch it and that's amazing. Cases are supposed to protect and feel nice to the touch.

The case respects all the time spent on designing the phone while providing more function. Because we all have commented on how Otterboxes or other cases throws off the size and shape of the phone it surrounds.

This is one of the best swimming against the tide posts I have read on here in a long time. I couldn't agree more with you.

People are just jumping to rash conclusions based on their initial impressions of physical appearance. This new product is worthy of a lot more deeper thought than that. I love what Apple has created here.
