I don't really understand the hate for this thing.

My wife has one for her 6s and absolutely loves it. Sure it doesn't look that great, but it serves its purpose very well. It charges the phone on the go, actually feels surprisingly good in your hand (very similar to Apple's other rubber cases), it is straight forward to get the phone in and out without multiple parts that can be lost or broken, and has a great battery level notification system.

I actually like seeing an Apple product that has gotten back to considering usability and not just aesthetics in their design... If they has a Plus version I'd get one for me too.

I'd consider the Apple battery case under the following three conditions:
  • They make it look less pregnant
  • They put smart connectors on the back of the iPhone so the case doesn't need to be taller to charge
  • They make the battery itself thinner. Two ways:
    • Lower the capacity to match exactly the capacity of the device
    • Form the battery cells to the contour of the case so that the bump is smoothed out. See my first condition above.
If the iPhone 7 itself has two extra hours of battery life, then I would be fine with a case that provides one additional charge. They don't need to go over that. I'd rather have a slim profile.

If they really wanted to sell these, they would build-in a headphone jack, lol. That's a joke, but probably also true.

Please explain the aesthetic principle(s) at work here.

A. To dampen Apple's recent stock surge?
B. To mark any who believe iPhone battery capacity should exceed what Apple believes?
C. To focus on the Smallness of this lifeless conjoined twin as distraction from iPhone's largely inefficient screen-to-body ratio.
D. To embody Apple's motto: transparency?
E. To prevent potential popularity here distracting from design and production of other products?
F. In Apple product surveys, to measure underlying blind faith and brand value.

Huge fan of Apple. Here, confused.

I think the battery does not extend all of the way to the bottom to allow it to be inserted into a multitude of bases that normally take the iPhone itself. And it obviously can't extend too close to the camera or risk it interfering with the capture.

Good god that battery case is ugly. Why didn't Apple simply buy Mophie? Or collaborate with them?

In any case, I hope one day Apple makes an iPhone dedicated to outdoor pursuits - vibration-, dust- and water-proof (not just resistant), efficient GPS system, larger battery, perhaps some sort of efficient peer-to-peer emergency system (something like the Uepaa! app), emergency strobe, and a backup battery for emergencies in case the main battery dies.

When I'm in situations where I know I will be draining my battery quickly (e.g. a football gameday), I carry a Mophie battery pack & cable with me. It's a pain in the ass, but it works. I kind of like the idea that this thing, with a bigger battery, can replace that and I don't have to carry all that ****.

But the $99 price point is what would be in the way of me buying it. Not the looks. I don't really mind the way it looks.

first the haters bag on apple for being form over function, now they bag on apple for function over form. you just cant win with haters.

if you want to understand this case and why its certainly not crappy, educate yourself here:

The MacRumors groupthink has spoken. It's ugly and not configurable, so that takes precedence over its utilitarian function and ease of use. Just like the iPhone 6 design, that protuding camera is just so ugly, I would much rather have a worse camera and a flat back.

Or what Apple should do is make the case easy to use and look good. This is just so ugly. Can you see how ugly it is? Jony Ive talks about form and function ideally being the same thing. Curves for example look good but also feel good and blah, blah, blah. The form on this case is just so ugly I don't care how it informs function. It's so ugly.

I saw one of these things on the train once and I just couldn't get over ugly it was and how this man didn't feel the least bit embarrassed to be in public with this ugly thing.

Yep, still one of the ugliest things they've ever brought to market.

I think it's one of the ugliest things any company has brought to market.

It's like Apple are just having a joke with everyone to see how far they can push things and still sell. No headphone jack on the iPhone, only one port on the MacBook, hideously ugly battery case...

i understand that, but thats just not how i like to do things. If I'm going out for the day would rather know that later on i can turn my case on if i need to rather than oh **** my case is already dead and my phone is nearly dead. its how i always am. i carry around my 21000 portable anker charger and i plug it in when i need it, i don't keep my phone plugged in charging all the time.

If you use the iPhone battery case as intended, why would both your case and iPhone be dead? The idea is that you use the case battery first and by the time you use an appreciable amount of power from your internal, you would likely be near a charger by then.

Imagine if they used that case to add a headphone jack to the bottom...

The 6s case does have a headphone socket. It's also done from the lightning socket rather than plugging into the headphone jack on the phone so there's no reason they couldn't have left it in the new case, apart from they really hate the headphone jack now ;)

I use a significant number of bluetooth devices and as such my battery life on the iPhone 6 was crap. I have the previous generation case and I have to say I actually like it better than the mophie battery cases. The lightning port is the key feature, the design you get over. Overall it's actually a well done idea. I just wish they had one for the iPhone 7 Plus.
