Another odd-ball thing, and maybe I'm the only one, but I've seen the phone battery drain even when the case isn't fully depleted. Usually when I'm using the phone excessively.
Maybe the external battery simply cannot deliver the same amperage that the phone can draw under maximum load (which by definition the internal battery can).

Chinese technical certifications revealed that the iPhone 7 likely has a larger 1,960 mAh battery, as previously rumored, meaning Apple's Smart Battery Case can charge the smartphone fully with roughly 17% capacity remaining.
Apple officially says a fully charged iPhone 7 with a fully charged Smart Battery Case can provide combined talk time up to 26 hours, internet use up to 22 hours on LTE, and video playback up to 24 hours.

Uhhh, thanks for the article but you might want to double check your math before making bold battery life claims! Charging is not 100% efficient. The case will absolutely not give you 1 full charge plus 17% remaining, as evidenced by Apple's own numbers. (If so it would be more like 32 hours talk time, 25 hours LTE internet, 28 hours video on a full phone + case battery.) The times are a little less than doubled, so you can probably expect something closer to a 90-95% charge to a depleted phone.

In other words, you can't just subtract the mAh to see how much difference you'll be left with. A significant portion of the energy is lost on conversion.

... that protuding camera is just so ugly, I would much rather have a worse camera and a flat back.

Think about that for a moment. How would you feel about Apple compromising the camera just to have a flat back? People already complain about stuff that doesn't matter, just imagine the complaints about that!

Don't you use a case that offsets the bump anyway?

Let us make the phone even thinner, so we can sell special charging cases.
Do you know phones that come in two different thickness values (with one having noticeably more battery)? There will always be situations where somebody needs more power. The power consumption between average use and maximum use must differ by several factors, meaning for some use cases every phone could profit from having a battery twice as large.

But this case doesn't need to charge the internal battery, it can directly power the phone. It's like having two batteries, first you use one and then you switch to the other one.

TJust like the iPhone 6 design, that protuding camera is just so ugly, I would much rather have a worse camera and a flat back.
You cannot please everybody. If you can give me some evidence that yours is the majority position, I would be more sympathetic.

and you still can't turn the charging functionality on or off.

waste of time/money

Apple probably knows very well how the battery case charges the phone. As you use up battery, you are using the battery of the case first. It's not wasting any mah. I think Apple designed it so once the case is drained, you can take the phone out and have a fully charged iPhone.

Why...why does it have to be so ugly?!

I've seen it in person, one of our clients has one. It's a lot slimmer than what the photos show, and I don't know if they've considered re-taking the photos because they do look very different.

When the first gen model came out, I too couldn't believe they'd release something so ugly. Then I went to the store and looked at and held one, and, I started to change my mind a bit.

Flash-forward to now, and, there's a new one sitting at home waiting for the iPhone to arrive tomorrow and go in it. It's actually pretty comfortable to hold, it does the job, and I like the integration directly with iOS. I also like that I can charge with a lightning cable -- my house is littered with dual micro-usb/lightning cables now because my Mophie case requires the former.

Theoretically this makes sense, but if you "only" use your battery cases's battery it could be bad for the internal battery as well. Batteries are not supposed to be charged and left in a fully charged state for extended period of time. Today's batteries need to be used frequently to sustain maximum life.
I am sure that if you run down your phone's battery once a month, that is pretty much sufficient. Just use your phone once per month without the case and you're set.

"...but still does not have a headphone jack, or even a valid replacement for a headphone jack."

So... Apple makes thinner phones,"oh my God, why the obsession with thinness, all this form over function, hang Jony Ive, give me more battery!" Apple makes a case with more battery but creates a thicker protrusion to hold said battery, "oh my God it's so ugly, Apple should focus on design and make beautiful products!"

But this case doesn't need to charge the internal battery, it can directly power the phone. It's like having two batteries, first you use one and then you switch to the other one.

1) I was refuting the example made by the author about 1 full charge plus 17%. This would be for the scenario of putting a fully-charged case on after the phone has died.

2) Even using the case fully charged as intended, it still doesn't quite double your battery life. Again, Apple's own numbers back this up.

Personally, I use the mophie now. I discharge the mophie first then rely on internal.

This also gives me the opportunity to take the mophie off and charge it for reuse later in the day.

The only downside I see with the mophie is the phone thinks it's plugged into wall power, so it allows some actions that waste power. For example iCloud backups that require wall power.

Does the Apple "hump" solution do the same? When it is running off external battery, does the phone think it's plugged into the wall?

1. It is ugly because
2. form follows function because
3. The bottom must be thin to fit into many docks and
4. The top must be thin not to interfere with the camera like some thicker cases can and
5. the sides are thin to make it easier to grip and use and
6. The design reduces flex on the battery to prevent explosion from damage when attaching and removing it so
7. It is ugly.

I'd never buy one, Steve would not have approved, but the reasons are many why it is ugly.
