It sounds like Local Notifications would take care of that

How? IM apps still need the server for the single network connection so I would imagine they will still use server based notifications. The issue is having to start the app up each time.

I'm a bit disappointed that there's still no way to save email attachments or transparent access to the file system.QUOTE]

I actually just ran into this issue the other day. Had to xfer a audio layer from email to non netqworked computer and couldn't do. A bit frustrating.

If it's in free apps that is fine, but apps that I purchase is not cool.

This is instead of the current ads that are in apps.

Funny....Google purchases AdMob and Apple makes AdMob on the iPhone irrelevant! This war is going to be fun :p

the mention of iAd using HTML 5 in interactive ads is a shot to adobe flash

war with google and adobe just intensified

While i do want the free app developers to get money so they continue to bring good apps. Then iad is good.

But dont use it for apps i paid 15 dollars for.

Also i dont get why they use more time on add stuff then multitasking

Social gaming network???? :confused::confused:

Erm... how about "good" games on each platform??

QFT

I still don't get, why people regard the iPhone/iPad as gaming environment. And comparing the sheer number of games - gimme a break.

There is no Mario, Monster Hunter, Pokemon, whatever franchise on the iPhone/iPad, that delivers close to the experience on the other gaming platforms.

In free app noob. As it was already with AdMob.

From SJ's mouth
"We have a lot of free or reasonably priced appsreasonably priced apps... we like that, but our devs have to find ways to make money. So our devs are putting ads into apps, and for lack of a better way to say it, we think most of this kind of advertising sucks."

Its the paying money part I have a problem with.

Yes, for Skype. But there is a limited set of apps that can support multitasking (only 7 services are provided for multitasking). The majority of apps will just have access to the ability to save their state and relaunch. From what I can tell, Apple didn't add the ability for IM apps to run in the background. I found that to be a huge oversight since that is one of the few apps that truly needed it.

No, my impression is that any app can run in background. But they've provided some specific services that make it easier for certain types of apps to run in background while minimizing resource consumption.

They've also added new APIs that provide access to more basic resources - such as text messages - that have so far been restricted to Apple-only apps. So, now you can write an integrated "messaging" app that deals with texts and IM, for example.

This is a developer event. For developers, ads are a feature.

You're right but people here are just too stupid to get it!
I'm planning to do free Apps in the future and iAd could be a help to pay the bill!

If you own an iPhone, you've gotten the enhancements for free so what are you complaining about? Ever heard the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? iPhone OS is so widely used because it is well liked, efficient, and easy to learn. Why do they need to be revolutionary with the UI now? I think the enhancements are great and I look forward to the release.

Right, and now it looks like they're putting it on all their mobile devices. They're stabilizing it and making it similar across the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, and the rumored new smaller iPad. Be real, people, they're not going to create a new UI for each device. Apple is about simplicity and efficiency. Desktop OS and Mobile OS, period.

Please tell me they are holding a new notification framework until the end. That is one of the biggest features holding the iPhone OS back from most modern phone OSes.

I like it!

Service #1, 2, 3, 7 are pretty-much what I predicted here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/890489/

(Page down to comment #9).

It's only logical. With a clean slate, plenty of time to mull it over and think about how to do it right, this was the right way to do things.

Haven't seen anything about limiting background apps to a % of total CPU. Not doing so might be the downfall of iPhone multi-tasking and turn it into a useless Windows Mobile-like device which every user is going to load up with background tasks. Of course, every developer things their app is SO SPECIAL that it needs 101% of CPU when working in background. ;)

Don't bother checking this, all he says (In about 300 words) is that he expects multitasking. Nostradamus he aint.

unjailbreak

a lot of the big reasons to jailbreak are addressed with this update, now jailbreaking will still let you tweak the look and feel of the phone more to each person's wishes so it will still be done but muiltasking, wallpapers and in app sms is enough to maybe buy the new iphone this summer and leave it be. although i would like to get rid of the app names i like my icons with no names, helps see the wallpaper better and looks less cluttered:D

i Do Not Want Ads In Apps That I Purchase!

Then don't purchase Apps that are Ad supported

Seriously, is it THAT difficult for people to think for a moment before posting a kneejerk reaction? We already see this in current apps, some are free, some are ad supported, some you pay for. Heck, some even offer a paid for version AND a free, ad-supported version.

What Apple have done with this is give developers another reason to build apps for their platform. If they can deliver something slick and seamless to the end user that increases the click-through rate then devs WILL use it, especially if it's quick and easy to implement. That gives them a better financial return on their time and effort while letting them price their apps lower (or free). Frankly, I'd consider that a win/win, especially if the devs are smart and do a paid-for version without ads for those that want it.

i Do Not Want Ads In Apps That I Purchase!

10:52AM "Because iAd is in the iPhone OS itself, we have figured out how to do interactive and video content without ever taking you out of the app."

What?

I think you need to get some perspective on what it actually means.

It does not mean that the iPhone OS itself will display ads.
It does not mean that apps you buy will have ads.

It just means that there is a common Apple-supported platform for developers to add ads, if they should choose to do so. Just like supporting Push Notifications, or the camera, or Location Services.

Developers are going to do it anyway. Just consider it now sort of like a documented API, instead of using an unsupported/undocumented API. And if there are ads in paid apps, then the developer will take a caning from their users and people will stop purchasing it, and review it down. It will become common knowledge, the market will decide, and the app will fail. Exercise your consumer power to patronize vendors who do not put ads into their paid apps.

Now, having said that, that doesn't mean I still don't like ads in apps. I don't like ads anywhere.
