From SJ's mouth
"We have a lot of free or reasonably priced appsreasonably priced apps... we like that, but our devs have to find ways to make money. So our devs are putting ads into apps, and for lack of a better way to say it, we think most of this kind of advertising sucks."

Its the paying money part I have a problem with.

its more like we want some of that money - 40% of it ;-)

Also i dont get why they use more time on add stuff then multitasking

Because this is a developer event, and iAd is something entirely new for developers (and Apple) that they need to convince them to use. Everybody already knows why multitasking is good.

My God. I'm not one to gush like so many of the diehard fanboys here do, but Apple has found a way to make advertising look fantastic. Amazing. Developers are going to love this.

Nothing special in iPhone OS 4 then. I'll be in the queue for the HTC Evo :)

I think you need to get some perspective on what it actually means.

It does not mean that the iPhone OS itself will display ads.
It does not mean that apps you buy will have ads.

It just means that there is a common Apple-supported platform for developers to add ads, if they should choose to do so.

Developers are going to do it anyway. Just consider it now sort of like a documented API, instead of using an unsupported/undocumented API. And if there are ads in paid apps, then the developer will take a caning from their users and people will stop purchasing it, and review it down. It will become common knowledge, the market will decide, and the app will fail. Exercise your consumer power to patronize vendors who do not put ads into their paid apps.

Now, having said that, that doesn't mean I still don't like ads in apps. I don't like ads anywhere.

Is it one step closer to this tho? http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/16/intrusive_apple_ad_patent/

They had me right up until iAd. Yuck! Who wants more ads built in. . .

What do you mean more? It is most likely just different, and I would say people who want free or low priced apps are those who want ads built in.

If you own an iPhone, you've gotten the enhancements for free so what are you complaining about? Ever heard the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? iPhone OS is so widely used because it is well liked, efficient, and easy to learn. Why do they need to be revolutionary with the UI now? I think the enhancements are great and I look forward to the release.

Exactly. A lot of people on this board don't understand Apple takes their time in the design stages, and once they arrive at something, they commit to its concepts, as any good designer would.

Completely scrapping the UI for the sake of change would be foolish on so many levels.....

This is huge.

Someone is throwing tatamis at Nintendo HQ.
What IP does Apple or its developers have for games? Nintendo can get me to buy a console on Metroid and Smash Bros. alone.

Very valid point.

Would be interesting to see nintendo actually react and sort out their system though..

no background app multitasking

My take is that there isn't really background multitasking of apps, just a bunch of OS services that new apps can request to be run in the background for them while they are suspended/frozen.

Haha... the University of Michigan made an appearance! GO BLUE!

I still don't get, why people regard the iPhone/iPad as gaming environment. And comparing the sheer number of games - gimme a break.

There is no Mario, Monster Hunter, Pokemon, whatever franchise on the iPhone/iPad, that delivers close to the experience on the other gaming platforms.

I think there are better games on iPhone OS than other portable consoles! And sure your "delivers close to the experience on the other gaming platforms" are pure crap.
As a gaming platform, and it isn't one, iPhone OS is cool!

If it's in free apps that is fine, but apps that I purchase is not cool.

Agreed. I believe what Apple is going for is realistically ad-supported and free to the end user, but the developer still makes money, or with $$ cost to the end user. Only time will tell how it works out, but it could potentially increase the amount of free apps. We'll see.

Being older and working for a living and all that, I believe in people getting paid in some way for their work.

No Flash support mentioned. You're an idiot, Mr. Jobs.

You've gotta be kidding.

After spending months slagging on Flash, you think they're going to support it??

Flash is now officially persona non grata. It's all about HTML5.

Deal with it.
