Apple doing what it knows best, ripping you a new one. Want multitasking on the iPhone? buy the new iPhone. Well played.

And it's not a real app-level multitasking either. So, once you bought new phone - baaaam, we have a new OS for you - with real multitasking!

Q: Why have you veered away from widgets on the iPad?
A: We just shipped it on Saturday. And then we rested on Sunday.
Q: So widgets are possible?
A: Everything is possible.

The only reason I take issue with this is because Apple is STILL SELLING the iPhone 3G in their stores!

I fully understand and expected that my 1st Gen iPhone would not be compatible but my wife's one year old iPhone 3G will be crippled? Are you serious?

And I'm getting sick of HTML5 this and HTML5 that....

You've seen exactly 5 slides of it, with a light overview of 7 vague services. You don't know anything of the sort. Wow, the paranoia factor - Apple is out to leech money out of you - is just mindboggling. You know what? Wait until you have facts to back up your assertion of it not being "real" multitasking before you open your mouth, because flapping it too soon makes you look stupid.

App quits, but it tells background process what she wants to do.

I thought so too. But they mentioned "local notifications". Is there some separate api that you can just run whatever code you want to some background thread. For example if you wrote a twitter client.

and here's a response to question by Scott Forstall:

Things like Twitter work better with push notifications, when you get the most relevant data. It's better in iPhone 4.0 since you're told where you're going and because the app is still running.

1) Still no user defineable homescreens?

2) And no automatic layout in Safari like it is in the Android browser when you pinch and zoom into a page so that you don't have to scroll left or right?!

Yeah, and most likely, not supported by any current iPhones "sorry guys, you'll have to buy ANOTHER new iPhone". Priceless.

Don't bother checking this, all he says (In about 300 words) is that he expects multitasking. Nostradamus he aint.

No, actually, I said that I expected specific new APIs to help with background audio and GPS services. I also said I expected the ability to save the state of an application for quick restart by saving it's r/w memory segments rather than having to serialize the app's data as is currently necessary.

While I didn't mention this in my earlier post, I also correctly predicted that if multitasking features were going to be implemented on a subset of devices, it would be 3GS and later, along with iPad. (Because these are the devices that have 256MB of RAM.) There was much disagreement about that one, but I got it right.

These were simply my views on how Apple was likely to "do multitasking right". They seem to align pretty closely with what Apple has actually done, save for my prediction of some cap on CPU usage when in background, which I've seen no mention of.

My comments were from a developer's perspective and maybe a bit too technical for some here to understand. If you didn't understand what I said, perhaps you should withhold comment.

The Iphone now works legitimately the way jailbreakers wanted it.

But let's bitch about not having it the 3G version anyway.

iAd - well kinda makes sense for a developer preview event

Folders - like the concept, gotta see the icon in action to make a judgment

Wallpaper - don't use it?

well with wallpapers, alot less people will use winterboard unless that want themes and alot less peple will jailbreak

Oh Really?
I don't ever remember even once people asking for more Ads.
Oh jeesh this iphone would be so much better if it spams me with more ads.

No, it really isn't. Never mind that practically everything anybody has ever complained about, ever, has now been addressed. Except for, you know, the big rotting, maggot-riddled skeletal dead horse that is Flash.

new iphone

hey, in the image of the 2 iphones:

Why the first one is larger???

You've seen exactly 5 slides of it, with a light overview of 7 vague services. You don't know anything of the sort. Wow, the paranoia factor - Apple is out to leech money out of you - is just mindboggling.

Here is one example - instant messaging. Did they mention you'll be able to get it? I do not think so. And if it was possible they probably would mention it (as another revolutionary feature albeit available on all competing platforms)

Yes, but in Apple's world software and hardware are tightly integrated. The fact that they did not mention anything about higher resolution indicates that there will be no screen upgrade. Most likely there will be update for CPU (A4 - like iPad).

Yes, but when iPhone 3.0 was previewed this time last year, there was no mention of a digital compass API right? But that appeared in the summer iPhone refresh

Is it me or did I miss the hardware upgrade? Are they really going to have the same hardware running for 24 months in a row?? (I mean by Summer '11 it will be 24 months in a row).

That is shocking.

They don't mention hardware in these events. Hardware is announced later.
