11:23AM Also, when Steve was asked if there were plans to add Flash or java, his response was a flat: No.

people really need to realise they aren't going to add it which is good. Not everything needs to be done in flash and sooner web developers realise that the better.

I know i'm tired of looking for game information and closing a page because it's got some huge arse pointless flash page when i just want text and pictures.

-10 iAds
-5 Crippled iPhone 3G compatibility.

The only reason I take issue with this is because Apple is STILL SELLING the iPhone 3G in their stores!

I fully understand and expected that my 1st Gen iPhone would not be compatible but my wife's one year old iPhone 3G will be crippled? Are you serious?

And I'm getting sick of HTML5 this and HTML5 that....

The iPhone 3G has the same CPU clock speed and RAM as the original iPhone. I was surprised that iPhone 3G support was still there.

For the iAd, I truly think it's revolutionary, but the majority of people, of course, don't like ads at all.

I do agree they emphasized HTML5 a bit too much.

Vague

Q: Why have you veered away from widgets on the iPad?
A: We just shipped it on Saturday. And then we rested on Sunday.
Q: So widgets are possible?
A: Everything is possible.

Same as Jobs response about the new MBP's - "Not to worry". HA!

Hmm that is what I was waiting for the whole time, a glimpse into future iphone hardware!

But by releasing the API today without any mention of a screen res bump, I have to wonder... is it going to be the SAME as the last 3 years!?

Anybody want to comment on that?

hardware upgrades are, or have been in july. at least for iphones. i imagine we'll get a new iphone that kills the android. the android phone felt cheap when i held one. i would imagine apple ups everything to go past androids current phone. i think the real test for the android will be if a verizon iphone comes this fall. right now iphone is ahead only on 1 carrier. att isn't the biggest. android is everywhere. once iphone is everywhere then you have a true test of who will win the smartphone battle.

No multitasking on my iPod touch? Not on the iPad until fall?
Damn Apple, a big bag of disappointment there at the end. Now I am seriously questioning my pending 3G iPad purchase.

Ok, so that was my initial reaction. To expect people to not be disappointed to hear that their last gen device will still not let them listen to Pandora and read email at the same is just silly. Hell, that's the only multitasking I care about on it, I think they should at least implement just the streaming audio. I guess its time to jailbreak my iPod again.

I was also reminded today that you cannot buy a device on the expected future capabilities. Sure, I will get an iPad, but should I buy now or wait six months until we see exactly what is supported on the iPad from OS 4. Next summer will we then find out that the first iPads are already too old for OS 5? That amount is not pocket change to me, I will be stretching my budget to get it and I want it to last a while.

Oh Really?
I don't ever remember even once people asking for more Ads.
Oh jeesh this iphone would be so much better if it spams me with more ads.

Well, that's just a bonus feature isn't it?

What on earth makes you think you'll be seeing more ads than you currently are? And "this iphone ... spams me with more ads" is utter nonsense. Apps will be giving you ads, like they currently are, just like they have for months before. Ads will be entirely laid at the feet of the developers who choose to put them in. Apple just provides a technology, same as Google did/does. Hopefully they will just be less horrible.

This ridiculous knee-jerk garbage of "my iPhone will be showing me ads now" has got to stop, because it's not based on anything real, except a severe misunderstanding (or deliberate misconstruing) of something that was made quite clear during the presentation.

These are freakin' awesome updates!

The Great :D
Multitasking, with its services, is better than I thought. They thought very carefully about what multitasking is for, exactly, and provided optimized, standard solutions for them. Local Notifications are big.

The Good :)
Folders, Email, Enterprise, Game Center, are all great additions.

The Bad
iAd makes me want to puke. It was just a matter of time. Hopefully there won't be a shortage of apps that aren't plastered with ads.

Apple doing what it knows best, ripping you a new one. Want multitasking on the iPhone? buy the new iPhone. Well played.

This is how the world works, not just Apple. Companies want to make money...

The only reason I take issue with this is because Apple is STILL SELLING the iPhone 3G in their stores!

This is a PREVIEW. It's not out yet. It's likely Apple will have a new generation of hardware out by the time it ships, which will likely mean the end of 3G sales. If they're still selling them when iPhoneOS 4 ships, then you can ding them on it, but not now.

So not only did they rip off Xbox LIVE, they also chose to rip off the colors for the logo!

Hey, dummier. There is nothing that stops a developer putting ads into a paid app. It's only market dynamics that will stop them, because people will hate it. iAd will be just as accessible to a developer of paid apps as free apps, just as in-app purchase is available to both free and paid apps. Do you really think that Apple will go, "no, sorry, you're charging for your app, no iAds for you."[/SIZE]

That's exactly what they'll say.

Jobs said advertising is for free apps, in front of everyone.

In case you missed it, there will be an approval process/criteria for iAd inclusion in an app.

Let me break it down for you:

iAd - crap...if you're not a dev, it's just garbage cluttering up your phone. out of the 85 million iphone/itouch users....how many are devs? that's right, not many.

Folders - these folders showing multiple icons looks hideous. at least make the "folders" look like folders or something more clean and presentable. not an icon with 4 little squished icons in it to represent a folder. very un-apple like in the design department.

Lock screen - nothing...nada.....no useful lock screen, no tweat to the notifications, nothing. this is where apple really needed to focus their attention, not multi-tasking. super fail apple.

Wallpaper - this works on the ipad because there is a huge screen, but when you take a small screen like the iphone and clutter it with tons of apps and then throw a background pic in there....it looks like a MESS!

the whole iphone is becoming a congested mess.

no bueno dude

iad - how many apps do you use that aren't apple's? Do these people need to pay their mortgage? $0.99 an app doesn't pay the bills my friend.

Wallpaper - if you don't like it, don't use it.

If you think the iphone is a congested mess, don't use any of the updates! I don't think any of them are required for the user. Maybe you should stick to a 3G. Progress means change.

How would you improve it?

some widgets or other useful info for the home screen other than just app icons.

notifications - something non intrusive. after using android for 4 months, and now back on iphone, i can't stand consistent pop ups in the center of the screen, completely interrupting whatever you're doing.

Jason Chen:
Q: Are there any plans for you to run unsigned applications, like on Android?
A: There is a porn store for Android to go to. You can download them, your kids can download them. That’s a place we don’t want to go. We’re not going to go there.

Totally killing everything else...
Bur they have the hardware and software (funnily enough a pokemon heart gold ad just came on tv as I said that)
just would be nice for them to get a proper online service up...downloadable games/etc.

Maybein 5 years :D
:confused:DS(Wii)Ware allows you to DL games now?

Meant more in terms of full sized titles ;) or even the gc backlogue would be a start...

I find myself drawn to buying the xbox/xbla versions of games anymore...purely for acheivements/etc.
And just seems more unified.

That's why this game centre thing is pretty exciting :)
