so a developer would interact with iAd how? i assume no details were actually given correct?

I’m willing to bet you won’t. Like every other Apple consumer electronics product (iPhone/iPod), they’ll be a hardware update once per year and that’s it.

I tend to agree, but why the delay for the iPad release? I haven't heard much speculation on that. Why would the iPad release be delayed? Why not release it at the same time or at least within a week or so of each other?

Isn't technology just a bitch? Why won't everything just stay the same year in and year out - not moving forward or advancing?

Get a grip. People have a choice. They don't have to buy a new iPhone. They can stick with their old one. Only the geek community really cares about multi-tasking anyway. No one is holding a gun to anyone's head. They are simply moving progressing forward.

Well said.
It's amazing how many bitchers and moaners there are on this site. Never friggin happy.
This is a very good upgrade that I unfortunately won't get the full benefit of as I have a 3G phone. So what. Doesn't dilute what they have done. Perfect...no. But what the hell is?
Now can we see some computer stuff please Steve ;)

Maybe it's because the iPhone OS and the iPad OS are not actually the same, even when they use the same name.

This just solidified my decision - No iPhone this fall, will be getting Win Phone 7 which is not going to shove an Ad "Tentpole" up my ass.

All of the necessary details are covered in the documentation that is available to paying devs with access to the beta OS 4, the details of which is of course under NDA.

Whoever used that as an "Apple-ism" is seriously misinformed. When Snow Leopard was released, it dropped PowerPC support for Macs that were just a couple of years old.

Apple has generally expected users to upgrade their hardware every two years or so.

There are two senses of longevity.

One in the sense that the hardware itself lasts. Which is true. The iPhone 2G and 3G do not stop working when OS 4.0 comes out and there are very old PPC Macs out there chugging along.

The other sense is how long the hardware is supported. I don't think anyone would claim that Apple supports hardware for a long time, no one in the industry really does. You have to draw the line somewhere.

BTW. Not having Multitasking on the 3G but having 4.0 brings a lot of silly fragmentation for iPhone OS developers.

Let's say you develop and you want it to have two tasks or processes for speed reason. So the app will only work on >3GS but NOT on the 3G. So every developer now first has to check if you got 4.0 and then if you have a 3G and if so he has to implement silly work arounds because of the missing multi tasking support. This will result in a lot of bloat ware.

this is a cell phone, not one of the old over priced PPC Mac's. you get a new one when your contract runs out. and the 2 year contracts for 3G's will start to run out as soon as OS 4 is released. not like AT&T will give you a discount for keeping a paid for phone

tethering has been mentioned so many times in this thread, like apple has the blame wen it is actually AT&T that is blocking it. Ask the many other company's in the world if they have tethering included in there iPhone and most will say yes Tethering is a feature of 3.0 that we Americans don't enjoy because of AT&T so don't be surprised if tethering shows up in 4.0, just be mad at the fact that AT&T never permitted a old OS app to run and now (whenever that is) they (AT&T) will let you have it. that is just a long time coming

All the hype for this???

So all the new items in OS 4.0 is everything I can currently do on Droid.... Kepp the iPhone and the junk service know as AT&T.....

HAHAHA.....

And iPhone users get free Ad's with every $400.00 phone???? What a deal...

HAHAHA.....

Keeping 40% of the revenue, increase $$$ for your company, installing built in Ad's to your hardware, and streaching relations with your die hard customers by making them watch Ad's???

HAHAHA.....

What the HELL is Job's doing??? Did he get a Lobotomy during his last hospital visit???

Keep your iAd's and shove them.

True. But they are based on the same framework, and are essentially the same, hence the same name. BTW, I thought we might see a name change for the OS as well today. It doesn't seem right to call the OS running on the iPad the iPhone OS...

It sure was nice of Apple to continue selling the 3G as a 99 dollar iPhone when they decided the were going to gimp it.

At least with the original iPhone they had the kindness to stop selling it when the 3G came out.

Right, because no apps currently have ads, and developers who create free apps should have to beg on the corner for money in their spare time.

All in all, the update is great. Better than 2.0->3.0 IMO. It is a shame though that they didn't improve the notification system. I guess they have to leave something for 5.0...

That will come in Windows Phone 8, see they were only able to copy what Apple had done until January.

Seriously the iAds is nothing to get excited over. There are ads in free apps right now, and they are served by Google. Soon they will be served by Apple. End of discussion.
