All in all, the update is great. Better than 2.0->3.0 IMO. It is a shame though that they didn't improve the notification system. I guess they have to leave something for 5.0...

Ya I wish they worked on the notification system. On well.

Mostly good stuff:

GameCenter could be really cool. "Multitasking" looks like a great solution. I don't know why iBooks is part of an OS upgrade, but hey I'll take it. Folders is welcome (though why not just call it Stacks and use a stacks pile-up icon?). I am fine with iAd -- if it develops well, maybe it could even be used to fund a Hulu-iTunes type deal.

Still want:

Lock screen widgets/info
Notifications in toolbar instead of popups
Guest account so others can use certain apps or surf Safari without compromising personal info (more for iPad, but useful for iPhones too)

Solid B+

I was hoping for Apple to make its own gaming social network!
It's now here, but Game Center doesn't look very promising. =[
Eh, who knows. Maybe in the mean time between now and June they will probably add new cool features.
Well I guess multitasking won't run on my 3G, I'll just stick with it until my contract is over, use it as as an iPod Touch and then get iPad 2nd Gen when it's released! :D

Well said.
It's amazing how many bitchers and moaners there are on this site. Never friggin happy.
This is a very good upgrade that I unfortunately won't get the full benefit of as I have a 3G phone. So what. Doesn't dilute what they have done. Perfect...no. But what the hell is?
Now can we see some computer stuff please Steve ;)

I think a lot of people fail to realize that technology is always changing, and it is either you keep up or keep out, and that is entirely optional

Rotf at people yesterday saying " I doubt mulititasking will be talked about" yet he talked about it first.

Anywhoo I'm excited and if the new hardware is different and changes (front facing cam, new casing) I'm getting it no questions asked!!!

True. But they are based on the same framework, and are essentially the same, hence the same name. BTW, I thought we might see a name change for the OS as well today. It doesn't seem right to call the OS running on the iPad the iPhone OS...

An Operating System is not a Framework.

So, I am to take by Steve's comment "that if you see task manager, you blew it" that he blew it with OSX because there is a task manager.

I would not be surprised to see a few 3rd party Task Manager apps in the app store; since by default Android doesn't include it and more advance users like the fact they can shut a program down when needed, instead of having the OS close the app when needed.

Apple's been eying mobile advertising ever since as early as January. Today, as part of their iPhone OS 4.0 announcement, comes iAd: Apple's announcement that ads are about to get a lot more interactive—even fun.

What say you now, flash haters? All those flash ads you hate that move around and get in the way? Apple is now doing it themselves. It's not flash, but it might as well be.

Told ya, a long time ago. It's not really to benefit us. It's not really an issue of CPU usage or stability. These were reasons to get you ready to take Apple's medicine. All that rhetoric and it's just to benefit Apple's revenue stream. They are locking out a competitor from their devices, nothing more. I can't blame Apple for looking for other revenue streams from a business standpoint. From a user's stand point, I still think it sucks.

What I want to know is, did all of those in lock step with the reality distortion field save some of that Flash ad hate for Apple's iAd platform? Or do you love it because it came from the mouth of Steve?

As far as I am concerned they "could" still include multitasking on the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2g. I have my 2nd gen Ipod jailbroken with a program called backgrounder, which, actually leaves an application running in the background (like it would on a regular system) if you decide you want it to, while switching to something else. It is the only reason I jailbroke my iPod touch was so I could utilize chat applications, and have them stay up in the background while I was doing other things on my Touch.

Apple's system appears to need less resources (memory, etc) so it doesn't make sense that they would exclude a device that can obviously support some form of multitasking. In my mind, they could have enabled a reduced form of multitasking on some of the older hardware, as, there is obviously a difference in hardware between the 3rd generation, and 2nd generation. For example, make it only able to multitask 4 applications, while the newer hardware has a higher overall limit.

Lastly and in short, this simply feels like forced obsolescence to sell new hardware, not a limitation caused by the older hardware itself.

I am planning on buying the next generation iPod Touch as it stands, I just hoped that my current unit would still support the new features while I waited for that release.

Sadly it won't, at least not 'officially'.

I have a 3GS. Im pissed only because of the obvious ripoff. I honestly don't care about multitasking. The thing that drives me nuts is that they can easily make people buy the new iPhone without having to resort to this kind of maneuvers.

Bro, what are you talking about?

This just solidified my decision - No iPhone this fall, will be getting Win Phone 7 which is not going to shove an Ad "Tentpole" up my ass.

Really, because I am pretty sure 99% of free apps have ads in them now. Nothing is going to change.

Q: How do you close apps when multitasking? A: You don't have to. Jobs says that if you see task manager, you blew it. Users shouldn't have to think about it.

right now i close facebook app and I know i wont receive any chats, updates or anything so I can put my iPhone aside in my pocket and work. The app CLOSES (no task manager involved)

From what i understand when I have 4.0 i will forever be looged on facebook???? since the home button won't close the app and keep it running in background...

Wow, I'm really disappointed with some of this thread. I've been coming here on and off for a while but I've never seen so much negativity until today.

It's been said a lot but I just want to reiterate:

- Developer's conference means ads ARE a feature to DEVELOPERS.

- As someone else said, Apple's hardware functions for a lot longer than some other companies' hardware, however...

- Apple updates their software and stops supporting old hardware pretty often, as has always been the case.

If you don't like iPhones or Apple, no problem. You don't have to. You can think they're overpriced and worthless. So, buy something else, and um, don't hang out at Apple fan sites. It's called common sense. And if you really have nothing better to do than complain or troll on a Thursday afternoon, maybe you should spend that time doing something more productive.

As for myself, I have nothing better to do with my time today, I admit it. But I'm not trolling Windows communities, either, or exaggerating about how awful things are. It's a phone. You don't even need one. People got along fine without them. If you like it, and you like the changes, awesome. If you have an iPhone and feel shafted for some reason, get a different phone.

My 3G iPhone, the only iPhone I've ever had, which was a gift this Christmas, won't get multi-tasking. That sucks, I guess. I don't know if I'd use it. I'll deal with not having it, and maybe someday I'll get the 3GS. No one dies. Life's not that bad. It's just a tech gadget for a company. You're a consumer. Buy it or don't - let your money tell Apple if you're unhappy with them. Complaining about it on the internet isn't constructive.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

Everyone complains the iPhone doesn't have flash, but what phones do? I know the HTC Desire has it, but what other phone has it?

Great so now iPad users can struggle to multitask on their brand new devices until June. Why release a brand new piece of hardware and rob it of features on release day and then announce the cool new features you have to wait 2 months to get. iAd is going to anger many people. They tried so hard to sugar coat it.

3rd party apps can't terminate other apps.

At the end of day, it comes to this, Flash sucks. It uses way too much memory and CPU. Adobe is at fault here, they should have improved the performance of Flash a long time ago...

Heh - what about to rather buy the new iPhone instead the 3GS ? Actually I'm thinking about to sell 3GS

hmm - true :D

Err, yeah they did. For me at any rate and for many others!

well I didn't JB to use wallpapers, or to multitask, or to copy&paste... there're small things that make a great experience... ever wondered how many characters you have left until you need to send two SMSs? Well, apple's message app won't tell you. LockInfo is another of those small bits that affect the user experience.. SBSettings.. I simply could not use a non-JB iphone... go prefs every time I want to able/disable WIFI or adjust the brightness etc....? ROFL!!

there's more, but that should be enough.....

Engadget just reports that with 4.0 you can't simply quit an application anymore but the OS chooses when it's time to free the app's memory.

THAT has already been quite stuipid on Android but at least you can close the apps with a task manager there.

However Apple will not allow any task managers at all:

A: (Steve Jobs) In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it.

Most stuipid decision ever!

Really, because I am pretty sure 99% of free apps have ads in them now. Nothing is going to change.

He obviously never used the App Store. Developers have been putting independent ads in apps for YEARS. Now there is a unified one that doesn't quit the application when you 'click' it.

iAd is going to anger many people. They tried so hard to sugar coat it.
WHY?

You realize it's to replace the crap ads in FREE APPS right? RIGHT!? If they HAVE to be there, whats wrong with making them a little more entertaining?

God I'm sick of the bitchers on here not even getting their facts straight.

You have to nickel and dime every transaction. It's not about the hardware as much anymore when you have so many stores to entice someone to part with $0.99.

I'll save those pennies for something worth my while and stick with free alternatives for media or software.
