dude thats freakin lame....

3g wont get the multitasking feature. whats the point. we don't even get half the features that are on 3gs... LAME.

Let me break it down for you:

iAd - crap...if you're not a dev, it's just garbage cluttering up your phone. out of the 85 million iphone/itouch users....how many are devs? that's right, not many.

Folders - these folders showing multiple icons looks hideous. at least make the "folders" look like folders or something more clean and presentable. not an icon with 4 little squished icons in it to represent a folder. very un-apple like in the design department.

Lock screen - nothing...nada.....no useful lock screen, no tweat to the notifications, nothing. this is where apple really needed to focus their attention, not multi-tasking. super fail apple.

Wallpaper - this works on the ipad because there is a huge screen, but when you take a small screen like the iphone and clutter it with tons of apps and then throw a background pic in there....it looks like a MESS!

the whole iphone is becoming a congested mess.

no bueno dude

i'll have to agree as well. Don't get me wrong some of the features presented today are certainly a leap forward but did not meet my expectations.
By expectations i mean the ones Apple set to me, the ones that make me shiver about anything new.
aybe it was the overall presentation maybe there are more things down the road. But after all i realize that was just a software presentation, just a part of the complete-finished product and not not the product itself.

I guess ill just have to wait and see.

We don't use that word round here, we prefer the term "fanboy" instead

funny, it seems like you are trying to use fanboy as a negative, i'm quite the fan of several things - dallas cowboys, jeeps, xbox, apple, etc... - you imply you are a fan of nothing? quite boring indeed.

Engadget just reports that with 4.0 you can't simply quit an application anymore but the OS chooses when it's time to free the app's memory.

This only applies to apps that support a background task of some sort. Other apps will start and quit like usual.

Imagine if Apple cared about games on the Mac as they did on the iPhone...

Pair this with some form of iphone OS /Apps running on the mac and I have a prediction. Apps will be able to be installed on Apple TV or possible MAC's to be on the big screen using you ipod Touches & iPhones as the controllers. You kind of see this vision in one increment on the ipad with Scrabble.

Wow, I'm really disappointed with some of this thread. I've been coming here on and off for a while but I've never seen so much negativity until today.

It's been said a lot but I just want to reiterate:

- Developer's conference means ads ARE a feature to DEVELOPERS.

- As someone else said, Apple's hardware functions for a lot longer than some other companies' hardware, however...

- Apple updates their software and stops supporting old hardware pretty often, as has always been the case.

If you don't like iPhones or Apple, no problem. You don't have to. You can think they're overpriced and worthless. So, buy something else, and um, don't hang out at Apple fan sites. It's called common sense. And if you really have nothing better to do than complain or troll on a Thursday afternoon, maybe you should spend that time doing something more productive.

As for myself, I have nothing better to do with my time today, I admit it. But I'm not trolling Windows communities, either, or exaggerating about how awful things are. It's a phone. You don't even need one. People got along fine without them. If you like it, and you like the changes, awesome. If you have an iPhone and feel shafted for some reason, get a different phone.

My 3G iPhone, the only iPhone I've ever had, which was a gift this Christmas, won't get multi-tasking. That sucks, I guess. I don't know if I'd use it. I'll deal with not having it, and maybe someday I'll get the 3GS. No one dies. Life's not that bad. It's just a tech gadget for a company. You're a consumer. Buy it or don't - let your money tell Apple if you're unhappy with them. Complaining about it on the internet isn't constructive.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

Wise stuff... Somebody with common sense finally...

Lets make a fund to buy you an iPhone 4.:p

Adobe is at fault here, they should have improved the performance of Flash a long time ago...
It's not just flash they should have improved performance of, try Illustrator. Illustrator CS 3 is crazy slow. They want people to adopt Air, no way. I much rather see HTML 5 and bag Air and Flash.

Congrats! You have both just denied one of your favorite Apple-isms, that longevity is a feature.

The 1st Generation iPhones will be able to upgrade to OS 4, albeit without some of the features.

The phones will remain fully functional - how does this diminish their longevity?

However Apple will not allow any task managers at all:

A: (Steve Jobs) In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it.

Most stuipid decision ever!

Yeah, I don't get this either. If I know I won't come back to a game until tomorrow, I wanna be sure that my iPhone's cache is free of it. I wish they had elaborated on this part.

Biggest bummer is only 3GS+ users can enjoy multi-tasking but then again it's not a shocker. My 1st gen can barely handle an intensive app like Asphalt 5 or NOVA, but switching from 1st gen to 4th gen should be fun! :D

Congrats! You have both just denied one of your favorite Apple-isms, that longevity is a feature.

Accepting donations to upgrade my 1G Touch, as ordered by LTD.

you miss the point, upgrading is a CHOICE not due to problems with the hardware/software and thus longevity still strongly applies

It sure was nice of Apple to continue selling the 3G as a 99 dollar iPhone when they decided the were going to gimp it.

At least with the original iPhone they had the kindness to stop selling it when the 3G came out.

T-Mo was still selling the G1 with Android 1.5 when they decided to support the Nexus one and other newer phones. is there a 2.1 Android update for the G1?

what exactly is your point?

I think iAd is fantastic. It will allow devs to get money, which will reduce or eliminate the price of apps that we like. If you don't like ads, you pay for the privilege.

How could this possibly be a bad thing? You want devs to make money so that they make apps you like. It's a good thing if there is an option for the money to come from someone else rather than you.

You've got a point, but I see it like this: There are two competing interests:

A: Devs want to make money
B: I don't want to view ads

If devs use iAd to satisfy A, then I don't get to have B. Of course devs can charge for apps to satisfy A, but I also don't want to pay "too much" for apps either. So there's a balance to be found.

So something the balance will work out so that I have to give up B to get an app I really want.

That will annoy me -- that's the bad thing, in my opinion.

He obviously never used the App Store. Developers have been putting independent ads in apps for YEARS. Now there is a unified one that doesn't quit the application when you 'click' it.

Most ad systems on iPhone apps don't quite the app when you click them today. Of course leave to Jobs to make that sound revolutionary. Also, the new ad system isn't going to unify ads on the app store. They will certainly get lots of devs in the program. But app developers aren't going to be loyal to apple when it comes to ads. They will use whatever system gives them the most results.

classy, and well-said - worth a re-read...

No it'll apply to ALL apps as all apps now will run in the background when you open a new one.

That is simply not true. Only apps that use the 7 service apis will run in limited mode in the background. Other apps can use the new api to save its state and restart its state when switching back to the app. They certainly will not be running in the background.
