Pixel2XL would be an excellent phone if it was $499. So do Apple. iPhoneX could have been $749 if Tim wasn't greedy.

Sure, Apple is greedy for its pricing but you’re not for expecting that they should set it based on what you can personally afford.

They’re selling these things as fast as they can make them, so I’d say they picked the right price point. They’re running a business, not a charity.

When Apple released iPhone 8 it blows everyone in the competition and I was like wow A11 chip was way ahead and powerful. The GeekBench was ridiculously fast and reviews touting this is almost as fast as the MacBook Pro. I had doubts which seems fishy to me because this GeekBench test was little bit skewed as opposed to competition. The number is way off the chart which seems true when comparison is made iPhone. Then there’s the “what ifs” meaning what if the phone drives a more power hungry high res display in this case the iPhone X. Now we got a much closer comparison. Apple was so smart to strategically released the iPhone 8 first and reviews was praisiing how A11 Bionic chip was twice faster than competition until I saw this. Never thought this is how it ends up but I’m glad it is, which means a good competition must go on.

It is kind of crazy to say "he would rather have the fingerprint scanner than Face ID.". FaceID you don't have to position a finger. You don't have to think about it. That is the point. You shouldn't have to think about unlocking your phone but yet still have all the security.

A Pixel's Red Flag

When I have one laptop and multiple phones, the phones become secondary. I don't care if people love their phones more, a laptop is always needed in a situation for tasks like transferring files.

This is why I CAN'T get a Google Pixel again.

https://www.androidauthority.com/google-pixel-mac-android-file-transfer-problems-743068/

Yeah, I can use Handshaker as an alternative program but it would be easier if Google offered microSD slot.

My LG, Samsung, and Motorola can be recognized by Android File Transfer but it freezes up and crashes. AFT is outdated. The fastest way is microSD to SD adapter. Transfer speeds are also way faster especially when you want to transfer 20 GB to 80 GB. While AFT will crash after more than 2 GB.

For a 2nd gen Pixel, Google did a great job. Better than Apple with iPhone 3G. Now if you want to include Nexus, then Pixel would be their 9th vs Apple's 11th gen flagship. Let's toss out Nexus 5X, iPhone 5c, and SE.

The Nexus One was the only one to offer microSD slot. Galaxy Nexus was the last to offer removable battery. Another drawback Pixel 2 XL has against iPhones in general is iPhones are the cheapest for Americans.

Apple iPhones flow like manna over here. They are left untouched on many carriers since the Day 1. You won't standout because I see in SoCal about 70% iPhone owners. Pixel 2 XL can only be found on Verizon if you want installments.

I find HDR+ a bit overrated. I don't like overzealous shots with artificial yellowish colors. It records great video though. Pixel 2 XL is a no-go for me. My MBA isn't expendable. That's why I am left looking at smartphones from NON-CHINESE brands although they're likely MADE IN CHINA.

Brands like Sony, Samsung, LG, Motorola (Lenovo-owned), Nokia (HMD is Finnish but Made In China) that might still have headphone jack and microSD slot. Proud my LGs from 2016 are made in South Korea but their image retention is evident after three months. LG Mobile is using poor displays unlike LG Display that invested billions on OLED to become the best with TVs.

The best and truest Samsungs have to be completely built with in-house components. I admire a real OEM like Samsung. Google and Apple just "design" them but don't really build them. Google is the weakest when it comes to hardware experience overall.

For the first time in years the iPhone X truly feels like a new experience. Everything else seems dated, even, my iPad looks like it needs a redesign. It’s time for that clean slate of glass Steve Jobs envisioned. The Google Pixel might be Google’s flagship phone but nobody will be talking about it in a few years. Anyone remember the Nexus One or the T-Mobile G1? The Nexus had an OLED display first but nothing about those products was revolutionary. The iPhone X has a super fast processor and new sensors for developers to tinker with. We haven’t even seen the capabilities of the iPhone X yet. The pixel is just another ho hum smartphone. Nothing to be excited about.

My iPhone X is just so fluid and responsive. Truly feels futuristic. I love it.

Unfortunately they've run out of innovations in the Apple space.

Remember when all the phones had either no browser or a crappy one, and they all had lots of buttons?

Steve convinced us a touch screen was best, and the world changed.

Now Apple has nothing to do but since they stole all our fingerprints, they need to steal our faces. They wanted to steal our health data, but that got shot down. That might be next though.

So sick and tired of app updates having only bug fixes. They've stagnated the market.

As far as iPhone x vs pixel 2, at least Google gives you their crowd think built in. You lose your privacy to them, but they give you a lot of stuff in return.

Apple just collects.

Examined a X for 15 minutes at the sprint store and was comparing it side by side with my 7+ and I was unimpressed.
First mistake I could see ppl making is which way is up.
Also set up Face ID vs Touch ID on 7+. Touch ID seemed faster to unlock to me.
The OLED screen discolored from top and bottom viewing like an LED.

I have an iPhone 6s plus but I am thinking I am going to actually upgrade to the 4 for the glass back. It just looks cleaner.

What?

It's ridiculous how many Android trolls I see in this thread. It reads like the Android and Apple troll garbage BlackBerry BB10 users experienced on their popular websites.

This is an Apple fan site and the guy writing this article "loves iPhone and Android equally" and for him it's impossible to choose which one is better. Right-on dude.

BB10 is still better than iOS and Android.

Erm?????
You DO realise this story and video refers to the 2 XL right? The one with bezelless design, has a premium metal case.
.

I wouldn't call this bezelless. Sure thing, not as thick bezels as iPhone's (except the X) but it still does have bezels.

The Pixel has an excellent camera but:
  • Mostly Plastic???? Aluminum and glass
  • Has Huge Bezels??xl no bezels
  • An inferior OLED from LG. Color shift. Burn in.? iPhone x has same burn in issue
  • Less premium build quality? Older processor in iPhone x
  • Generally Ugly? Opinion
  • No wireless charging.!! True
  • Removed headphone jack after making fun of Apple...loses all credibility? Better made Bluetooth headphones that allow language translation in real time

I know it's difficult for an Apple fanboy to understand this but you have decided to believe all the negative hype about the Pixel because you have confirmation bias.

* Grainy LED panel provided by LG: No, it looks great. This was never true.
* Burn-in on 2-week old LED green: Also not true. Maybe on Verizon demo units that had the display on with the same image 24-7? I think more likely, the early reviewers received demo units that were from Google's test units they had already burned in on purpose. Mine isn't showing any signs of burn in and there is no evidence (or reason) the Pixel 2XL display will burn in any faster than the iPhone X OLED. OLED does eventually burn in and the iPhone will have the same issue.
* Ships with missing accessories in the box: oh, yeah, for two people. That's a real tragedy.
* Ships with NO OPERATING SYSTEM: Again, for about two people right?
You missed the only real problem I have found. The blue tint when viewed at an angle. I rarely view it at an angle but at least that problem is real.

I'm sorry, but let's recap Pixel 2/XL issues:

  • Grainy LED panel provided by LG, check
  • Burn-in on 2-week old LED green, check
  • Ships with missing accessories in the box, check
  • Ships with NO OPERATING SYSTEM, check
Who's the tester???

It's not impossible to say.

I switched to the Pixel 2 from Ifone. But returned it within a week.

Volume on the Pixel 2 is limited through headphone making it inaudible in urban settings

The Pixels 2's speaker crackles during phone calls.

Also when taking pictures in flourescent lights banding appears on the Pixel 2's screen due to interference pattern.

I am sick of Apple UX - too many balloons and lazers and emoji based nonsense. But unfortunately Google struck out with this one. Do yourself a favor and avoid this lemon.

Maybe next time.

Agree, disagree? Thoughts?

Secure Digital (SD) cards are based on flash memory and as such have a finite technical lifespan. Fortunately, the expected period of functionality tends to be comfortably long. Most flash memory cards are equipped with a wear controller to balance out the demands on particular parts of the memory, and are guaranteed to withstand about 100,000 program-erase cycles before the integrity of data storage becomes compromised. In other words, even if one were to fill and format an SD card five times every day, it would still last for more than 50 years.

It's why I use Google Photos even if some can assume it's another Google spyware like Android, Google Search, YouTube Search, and Facebook. Imagine if your phone completely dies? Your files in the microSD card may not be. And vice-versa if the microSD card gets corrupted. I have a duplicate copy of the same exact files of my favorite content on another microSD card.

I read posters here saying they want the 256 GB iPhone X. I have nearly 2 TB of movies and TV shows I can easily hoard on a 256 GB iPhone X. I rarely have time to watch any of them on my 48" Samsung TV. Why would I want to hoard them on a phone? I don't like adding and deleting files over and over. It's like laptops. Shortens their lifespan.

You hoard files with very little left of storage that the device becomes slow. It's not like you will listen to 200 GB of your music within a year and you will be skipping through alot of them anyway. Hoarding files for nothing. Only keep the best or what you truly love. Adding media to fill up the storage is similar to updating your firmware or apps. The more updates, the more bloat, the slower it gets.

Cloud is the way. Streaming. Why would I need The Walking Dead episodes on my phone when I can watch them on Netflix? Keep your storage "mostly" as is after you stored them. For videos, only keep your favorites. The rest is just hoarding through media content you won't look at or listen to throughout the few years you will use a phone until the next planned obsolescence upgrade.

Pixel 2 XL and Essential PH-1 have deal breakers - Both lack microSD slot.

Sony. "Mirai" (future) design to finally replace OmniBalance. If Sony can bring back the Z3 design but lower the top and bottom bezel with the Z5/XZ rear, I would get it. Sony isn't very strong in camera and mobile displays though. Weak in reception like Essential. Great with software updates and battery life. Underrated ecosystem.

Last great Sony smartphone, Z3 (2014)

Unlocked. No carrier bloat. Likely keeps microSD slot and headphone jack. And not many Americans will buy Xperias so you might actually stand out from the 70% iPhone crowd and 20% Galaxy crowd here where I live.

BTW, Google Assistant > Siri

Only times I use Siri is to recognize a song on the radio like Shazam and Soundhound. They all have weaknesses. It's all a matter of preferring which strengths they have and putting up with their flaws.

Again, what do I know about different phones and OSes? ;)

No it's not.

(to the author, don't take this personally - we just really like our iPhones :) )

Agreed.

Somehow in trying to be unbiased, this reviewer has been biased against Apple.

Pros of Pixel 2:

Quick access to Google Assistant
Photos stored in the cloud for free
More customisable / rootable OS
Lower price

Pros of iPhone X:

Face ID
A larger, bezel-free display
A11 Bionic
Portrait Mode + Portrait Lighting
AR Kit
iOS ecosystem (apps are updated to support new APIs such as 1,000 apps already supporting AR Kit; No malware, unlike: http://www.zdnet.com/article/fake-w...oid-users-on-google-play-did-you-fall-for-it/)
Superior OLED display (DisplayMate: iPhone X Has the 'Most Innovative and High Performance' Smartphone Display Ever Tested was an article on MacRumors vs Pixel 2's burn in after about a week: https://www.androidauthority.com/google-pixel-2-xl-screen-burn-in-809299/)

Yeah, I guess they're about the same. /s

Well, it may be confirmation bias but the first two comments you made can be found on the Android forums as being a problem. The missing accessories and missing OS, that was MORE than two folks. All these topics are on the Android forums as being real issues, as well as on iPhone forums with quotes or links from Android forums.
