The biggest reason to buy Apple is NOT the HW per se, it is the OS. While Apple is not perfect relative to data privacy, Google's WHOLE BUSINESS MODEL was built on invasion of privacy.

Just use SMS, what’s app or simply do a call. I prefer to hear my friends anyway. It’s a phone isn’t it? ;)
I can't really hear my friend over a phone call due to the horrible audio quality. There's FaceTime Audio for that. SMS is also undesirable for many reasons, mainly that they probably won't receive it on their other devices. Usually the fallback is Facebook Messenger.

It’s true. People said to wait until the bugs with the X are worked out...with Face ID I’m still waiting for bugs.

As someone coming from an iPhone 6s I’m also impressed with my iPhone X.

I’m thinking about the first gen. Touch ID that came with my iPhone 5s-this Face ID is much more intuitive and unlocks my iPhone at a higher rate the first time than the first gen. Touch ID on my 5s.

I bought a Pixel phone a year ago and have no complaints -- it's the best phone I've ever owned, by far. My wife has an Iphone 7, and it's wonderful, for her. I have no doubts that the X phone is the best phone ever, but I bought a Pixel 2 XL this week and am very happy with it.

The last few things I've bought from Apple have all had problems (Logic board replaced on Macbook 12 and multiple keyboard problems with macbook pro, 13 and 15 inch -- and the ****ing spin drives they put in their new models of Imac's.) I'm starting to lose my faith in Apple -- I think they are cutting corners and costs to plow the money back into cars and fancy spoons and forks for their new spaceship.

I disagree. There's always issues with things, but the iPhone X and the new Apple Watch were both really well executed.

However, the keyboard issue you mention really is a problem. I have a touch bar MBP, and the keyboard issues drive me crazy. I've had it replaced once, but I think it's just a bad keyboard design. About once a day, some key stops working right, and I have to turn it upside down and blow it with compressed air. It's sort of crazy.

I'm sorry, but let's recap Pixel 2/XL issues:

  • Grainy LED panel provided by LG, check
  • Burn-in on 2-week old LED green, check
  • Ships with missing accessories in the box, check
  • Ships with NO OPERATING SYSTEM, check
Who's the tester???
Never had any of those problems so there we go

How does using iPhone avoids "Google's exploitation"? Don't you use Google search, don't you use Gmail or any other third party mail? No matter what, Google is getting your data. Google is everywhere. You just can't avoid it.
I don’t use Gmail. I don’t use Google Search. I use no third party email. Despite appearances, there are alternatives to Google’s exploitative system — if you are willing to forego the trivial conveniences it provides in exchange for your personal sovereignty. The Apple ecosystem provides the services I need without exploiting my identity or requiring me to trade my identity for services.

I picked up an iPhone X at my local Apple store and waited until I got home to activate it. The iOS 11 "copy from an existing phone" functionality is almost like magic. Just hold your new iPhone over your old iPhone to capture the "moving particle" image and within minutes your new iPhone starts restoring the latest iCloud backup to it.

Yeah, they took that Apple Watch stuff and put it to use

Correct. Apple is a software company.

The Pixel 2XL is $849 on Google’s website.

And its not even close in quality, even by the camera (which as a photographer don't agree at all on, Google messes up the colors). Seems techheads have google up their asses.
Also, the Pixel 2XL is a much bigger phones, so WTH, of course there is a chance the battery will last longer, most of the extra space is battery! The quality of articles on this site is abysmal.

But that price is fine and not at all expensive for an Apple phone?

iPhone gives you superior service/support. It has the superior ecosystem and Apps. It has a vastly superior processor. Vastly superior aftermarket support. All for slightly more money. Easily worth the small price difference, and I only listed a few obvious things.

iPhone X is cheaper when you consider it has 5 years of guaranteed updates vs. 2 years for the Pixel :)

"5 years"? Yeah right. Give 3-4 until iOS updates start crippling it. I think it's pretty well documented that while it's "supported", the os is definitely not optimized for it and you should stay away from it after 4 years for sure.

Wrong. Apple is a hardware company. Software companies sell software. Apple sells hardware with complimentary software so that the hardware will work.

They're a lifestyle brand that happens to make hardware and software.

Other than the camera, the hardware on the Pixel is a turd. Its saving grace is the software.

The A11 trounces the 835. Unfortunately, iOS11 is makes the device slower than an old device running iOS10. Hopefully Apple can address that in an update.
And there lies your reason why iPhones need constant updates all the time. What I don't get it is A11 is a new processor and ios11 is new. Both released at the same time, yet ios11 is slow on A11. Also makes you think A11 can trounce 835 all it wants, but can't handle OS it supposed to.

Actually no, iPhones don’t need updates all the time. iOS11 is the only time I️ can think of where a new OS crippled a new SoC. Video and photo processing (intensive tasks) still demolish the 835, even with iOS11.

I️ think the reason iOS11 is such a hog, is because Apple spent most of their time accommodating the iPad Pro and iPhone X. After Apple Pay cash is implemented, I️ hope Apple focuses on optimizing the OS.

The pixel doesn’t run iOS and so isn't comparable. Most of us and our families have invested in one eco system or the other so this sort of article is always completely pointless. It answers all of the wrong questions.

Can the Pixel run all of my family’s iOS apps? Google Apps are almost all available for iOS. In fact, I recommend Google Photos regardless of ecosystem.
Can the Pixel iMessage me? OMG a green bubble. What a tragedy.
Can the Pixel FaceTime me? Android supports a number of
Does the Pixel allow me to track it via Find My Friends? Facebook does this better. I will say, I'm shocked to now know someone who uses this feature.
Can the Pixel use our family shared iCloud space? Dropbox is a better, cheaper service. You can use it interchangeably on your Mac, PC, iPhone, or Android Phone.
Honestly, these comments are pure laziness. Google services are the only ones regularly available across iOS, Android. Do yourself a favor: Even if you don't want to go Android (totally understandable), start moving to Google Photos, Google Keep, and inbox. You'll be better off for it.

Good thing Google will be offloading most of the photo processing to a separate chip here soon.

Wrong. Apple is a software company that happens to sell hardware. Jobs called Apple a software company too. He even called the actual iPhone itself software.

Right. The iPhone X actually has a better still camera than Pixel 2 according to DXO but gets a better overall score bc of video.

And yet still got most of them wrong.

As for describing a product which is 18% more expensive in the USA (25% in the UK) as being a "small price difference"...

I am not saying Android is stable. All I am saying is you all bash Android for small issues. But when it comes to Apple, we should just accept it. You all trash pixel 2 xl for bad display where as iPhone X already showing unresponsiveness and green line on the display. pixel2xl single camera is better than dual camera of ios. So tell me where is apple better than Android. Definitely not like the way you all potray it.
Trust me, I have all sorts of Apple devices. But I try to keep an open mind and give where the credit is due.
The iPhone X display issues are not nearly as widespread as the XL it’s not even a close comparison. And this is while the iPhone X is mass produced at a much larger amount and scale than the pixel 2. The camera at that point is very similar and it comes down to personal preference, you can’t go off of the DXO mark scores. Also the iPhones pictures are better on the hardware level while the pixel uses a ton of software and algorithms to improve the photos, which can be done on any phone after taking the picture.

Another thing I forgot to mention about Pixels that I don't like is the inability to accept apk files via Bluetooth transfer. I like to have all my phones have the same version of apps. Usually older ones because the newer ones become bloated and worse. If I try to use their default file manager or ES File Transfer, the Pixel will not accept it the transfer.

My Samsung, LG, Xiaomi, Motorola, they can all BT apk files to each other. Only on my Pixel 1, nada. And considering Pixel doesn't have microSD slot and couldn't be recognized on Mac, it just made things harder. I had to always go to my parents to use their Windows PC to transfer stuff. In fairness, I do prefer Android as a media player over iOS.

File Manager > iTunes
Ability to play more codecs (no mp4 conversion nonsense)
Apps like QuickPic, MX Player Pro, GPlayer, Flud, and TubeMate.

I remember using MXTube way back in the day. Back in 2010, it was released on the App Store as MiTube. I downloaded it before it was taken down. Same with VLC Player.

TubeMate is actually superior to MXTube because you can download beyond just YouTube. And MX Player Pro could nearly play every video codecs with the video's audio in the background as well.

Video Players -
MX Player Pro
QuickPic
GPlayer (for PiP feature)

Video Downloaders -
Flud
TubeMate

Music Player -
Pi Music Player

Gallery -
QuickPic
Google Photos

E-book Reader -
Moon+ Reader (can recognize many formats including PDF for my magazine scans)

Keyboard -
SwiftKey (since 2013)

Even use AZ Screen Recorder that I rarely use if TubeMate can't download it.

I can play two videos horizontally or vertically if I wanted to using QuickPic and GPlayer. The latter has a mini-player like MoboPlayer. Had to do it profile for the screenshot. Android does win with versatility when handling media content but the Pixels can be restrictive with BT apk transfers.
