According to the market, over 90% of the customers in the market have chosen PC over Mac....

i would imagine 90% americans are christians because their folks were

doesn't make their fanciful uber-deity any more likely to exist.

All it does is show a certain.... lack of curiosity to the alternatives.

There are currently no known OS X viruses in the wild.

OS X cannot be infected remotely, either.
.

O rly? I hope to GOD you are not a logics or math major YOU CANNOT PROVE BY EXAMPLE for example "OS X cannot be infected remotely, either." You may try to infect it remotly 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times and never do it...does that prove your statement? No. On the other hand if 9999999999999999999999999999 you fail but 1 time you succeed did I disprove it? Yes. I hope you learned a little about logics, and remember you CANNOT prove by example ;)

edit: on a side note no machine with ssh enabled by default is safe in my opinion.

Ofcourse it does. iPod has the largest market share because it is the best player out there despite the premium
All you do is quote me a survey that has few thousands people in it. My evidence is a marketshare that contains billions in it and they have overwhelmingly chose PC over Mac. I know it hurts your Apple religion, but it is the truth and it will stay there for future.

It is not the truth. By that logic, the Honda is a better car with a better build than the Aston Martin because Honda has a larger market share.

More expensive, premium products (yes, Apple is a premium product. You opinion on whether or not it is worth the money does not change this fact) will always have smaller marketshares. It is in no way a reflection of the quality of the product, just the number of users owning it.

By the same 'example' logic, you can't prove your viewpoint either. :)

Actually, you can prove by example. What you can not do is disprove by example.

By the same token, there should be no high end segment for PC market as all those customers who are paying for expensive PCs would go for a Mac instead. The high end PC market is small compared to other segments of it but still profitable and has customers. If the price and quality were such big issues on PCs, all those who bought high end PCs would buy Macs indeed because the price is the same (Hey when Mac Pro came out, it was cheaper than the Dell alternative). They dont and high end PC market is rather healthy and growing and those customers with extra money show no sign of going for a Mac so ultimately, if Mac had such quality, they still would have way more marketshare than their dismal one now....

The computer world belongs to Microsoft either you like it or not and they will dominate it even more with upcoming Windows 7. As for fat latte sipping tight shirt wearing designers with their Apple laptops and iPhones, I'm sure Microsoft doesnt lose sleep over them

All that goes to show is that there is room in a market for multiple premium products targeting the same consumers that fulfill the same need. It says nothing about the quality of the products themselves.

Its also important to note that when you look at only the premium market (computers above $1000) Apple has a much stronger market share.

I don't disagree. (except about Windows 7. I remember how good Longhorn was in its beta stage. I tend to hold judgment on any product until the gold version is released). Still, nothing in your post addresses BUILD QUALITY or QA, which is what my post was about. Apple ranks very highly in those, higher than other hardware manufacturers. Microsoft doesn't enter into the discussion.

Actually, their current ad campaign seems to show that they do lose sleep over them...

so no viruses on mac = mac unhackable?

Not at all. It just means that an example can prove something but not disprove it. For example (hehe): An example of a Mac being hacked can prove that Macs are hackable but no number of examples of a Mac failing to be hacked can prove it unhackable.

hahaha yea that's what I was gettin at :p just looking at it the oposite way in terms of prove/disprove

What premium? A 120GB iPod sells for the same amount as a 120GB Zune. Oh snap.

I know it hurts your Apple religion, but it is the truth and it will stay there for future.

How about trying to come up with something more intelligent than the ridiculous "fanboy," "cult" and "religion" labels?

If there is blind religion here, it's the Winbots that have infested these forums as of late who throw out tired old chestnuts about Macs and their users with no facts or personal experience to back it up (BMWFan and his ilk).

I know it hurts the anti-Apple religion, but it is the truth and will stay there for future.

Good call! Let's throw religion (and your assumed omniscience on the topic) into the mix. Now we just need to equate our preferred computing platform of choice to the Republican or Democratic party (depending on your personal preference) or the topic of same-sex marriage and this thread will officially have hit the dirt.

Sheesh.

Exactly why Apple shouldn't be running ads about Mac being safe and not needing security software. Most computer users are not clued up about safe computing. They just want to point and click and accomplish the tasks they need to get done as quickly as possible.

All the anti virus software in the world will not stop a careless user from knowingly installing pirated software.

your point is moot, try again...

Sheesh.

That was probably the best post in this entire thread. Let's bring in Peta, Terri Schiavo, evolution, abortion, 9/11 theories, and the x-files while we're at it.

Actually, thats not at all what he said. What he said was that he couldn't afford a mac at the time so he purchased the Compaq, which he decided to use rather than the university's Macs which were unstable. He then said that he now owns a mac which has crashed a few times.

I also own some PCs, and my own little linux server...

They were two different stories from two different time periods. I find it illuminating that despite his experience with the university's macs, he still purchased one at a later date. That really says something.

The something it says is that I got a cheap iMac ! I am cheap. I am still unwilling to purchase the new stuff, i just cant justify that price. Exchange rate doesnt help.

His story was about the stability of a computer that you have control over, which I 100% agree with - PC's can be just fine if you know what you are doing and take the time to maintain it.

Controllign a PC enables you to maintain the quality. In the past 10 odd years of using windows i have seen hte BSOD about once, and that was self inflicted.

I also havent had a virus, malware, trojan, spent any money on virus checkers, spyware checkers or anything.

I also don't send money to Nigeria becuase somebody had a millionaire uncle that died and they need 5grand to get his money, and give me half.

Ofcourse they do. They go to a store, there is a mac and there is a PC and majority choose PC...
A big reason that Windows got to that 90% is that many people were given a computer at work and guess what? They had no choice what OS it had.

It is the same for those folks who bought tracks from your beloved iTunes store (protected AAC) and they have no choice but to get an iPod to play them.
So, those tracks won't play on the iTunes on my computer (Windows and Mac), or on Apple TV or the CD that I burned with them? Wrong, they do. So, I am not forced to get an iPod to listen to tracks purchased from the iTunes Store.

I dont think they are losing sleep. Their profits are up and even their game division is doing good now compared to the disaster that it was before (at least making profit). I think they are doing those ads for sake of doing it and taking shots at Apple rather than losing customers. To be honest, I dont like the ads from both sides. I think Laptop hunters are stupid because what they say is commonly known and nothing new; PCs are less expensive and Macs are sold at a premium. That has been known for years now. I'm a Mac ads are stupid because they are getting old and pointless. Windows market has viruses because it is such a huge market and lets face it, Windows today in terms of stability has nothing to do with Windows 98 days. Apple tries to make it seem like people are still buying Windows 98 with their machine, not true anymore....

What premium? A 120GB iPod sells for the same amount as a 120GB Zune. Oh snap.

It is a premium because people have far less expensive alternatives. I know why you chose 120GB model, but the 16GB or 32GB iPods (Nano or Touch) are more expensive compared other players with the same capacity. Yet people choose iPods because they provide a superior experience and yes, people HAVE the choice; the same way people have the choice between Mac and PC and more people choose PCs

As for calling the fans, they deserve it. Till few years ago, Sony and their Playstation brand had the most religious fanboys and now the title belongs to Apple. The real Apple fans are those who bought Apple computers back in a day where Apple was struggling; they bought Apple back then because it was a superior choice to other computers and if it had premium, it was justified
Todays fans are those who got to know to Apple by iPhone and look at it more as a fashion accessory and an element of being cool rather being a superior tool at what it does. So yes, they deserve to be called out and ridiculed because they are hopeless and ridiculous. Apple is a business like Microsoft and they are both about making money; if somebody happens to make a personal and emotional relationship to these corporations, then they clearly have issues in their lives and deserved to be made fun of

A big reason that Windows got to that 90% is that many people were given a computer at work and guess what? They had no choice what OS it had.

People are buying computers everyday and more people buy PCs over Macs. It is a fact and no matter how hard you try to spin it and make it seem like some other evil forces are trying to prevent justice being done and Apple rescuing the humanity, more people choose PCs and simple as that. People have the choice. Macs, PCs, Linux and it's up to them what to buy. More people choose PCs. Simple as that. You just happen to not like they choice they are making but it aint changing the facts....

Good call! Let's throw religion (and your assumed omniscience on the topic) into the mix.
Sheesh.

Got a problem with metaphor?

Is it not apposite?

People tend to stick with the systems they know.

Belief in a system does not make it better/true.

That is why we moved to QA. Which figures/vista tend to suggest is advantage mac.

Do you have to be so incredibly rude when disagreeing with someone?

Yep, all Windows users who get viruses and malware are gullible idiots.

Can one practice safe Windows computing? Sure. And if I wear a biohazard suit around town, I'm never going to catch a cold either. Unrealistic? Yep. The bottom line is the typical Windows user has suffered from virus and malware issues. I know - my Windows-using relatives and friends call me to come clean up the mess. :(

Unfortunately, Microsoft's 90% market share isn't made up of techno wizards who are savvy enough to protect themselves.

It is a premium because people have far less expensive alternatives. I know why you chose 120GB model, but the 16GB or 32GB iPods (Nano or Touch) are more expensive compared other players with the same capacity.

I chose the 120GB model because Microsoft doesn't have anything remotely close to the iPod Touch. Nor does anyone else, for that matter. Hence price comparisons to the Touch are worthless.

And FYI, the Nanos are comparably priced with the Zune equivalent, so the argument still fails.

As for fans, hardcore Microsoft users are just as vociferous as Sony or Apple fans. Take a look at any gaming forum to see the epic PS3 vs. 360 battles (while Nintendo quietly schools them both, heh). Or just browse this forum and witness the rabid nonsense being spewed by the Redmond Horde right here on MacRumors. I assume you probably have a 360, hence your dismissal of Sony fanboys. That's always the easy argument, isn't it? Denigrate those of opposing opinion as slobbering cultists.

does he have to be so incredibly arrogant?

He's not being arrogant. He's stating facts (in fact a long list of them).

Macs cannot be infected remotely (I'm assuming that's the part you contest, because the no viruses in the wild statement is not in question by anyone I know), because there is nothing for them to be infected with. They can be hacked, but that's an altogether different discussion, and requires a person actively being targeted, instead of merely downloading a file or connecting to a host with a bot running.

Your post on the other hand sounded like a 2 year old.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/arrogance he is feigning superiority through presumptious claims, I very clearly showed how these claims were not based in fact. I don't see how my comment was "like a 2 year old" rather I see it as calling it as it is...

edit: if anyone said what he said about my OS of choice I would say they were being arrogant too...I don't mean to be rude I'm just saying it was...
