That’s an old wives tale.
So one in 50k people are jonesin my finger print? That ain't cool yo!
That’s an old wives tale.
Second that. Both my wife and I have a single fingerprint of the others programmed into our phones so that we can use them quickly and easily without having the other person unlock it first. And without having to use the passcode. So my wife can open and use my phone without using the passcode. It's not big deal (she can use the code) but it would be nice to have.
So what? The camera can detect that you are looking at the phone. Which you are doing because you want to unlock the phone. Do you have privacy concerns because your iPhone 7 knows how often you touched the screen?Does anyone care that this is some of the scariest Big Brother technology ever created? They can read your freakin face in the dark. Why? I'll be skipping this BS.
The probability of two fingerprints being the same is one in a few dozen million. Since fingerprint sensors don't store every little detail, the final number ends up being in the tens of thousands region.
It failed at the demo. Even if there is a valid reason they need to get 3rd party sites to verify it really does work as quickly as possible.
First of all, that's your problem, not apples. And if you really want to share, then just use the code after two failed attempts. In case you haven't figured it out, face id is very complicated, and at this point, two store two faces is probably prohibitive. Not everyone get what they want, especially if implementation isn't trivial. But go ahead and bash apple for that. It's standard fare here.Do you and your partner keep secrets from each other?
Why would you not wish both you and your partner to be able to easily access each others phones?
Turns out that my wife and I have different faces. Why in the world would you need multiple faces? You have multiple fingerprints because you may open your phone with a different finger. But they are all yours. Do you have multiple faces?
As if apple hasn't been doing this all along. Oh please, the hysteria in this thread is beyond entertaining. It failed at the demo. Even if there is a valid reason they need to get 3rd party sites to verify it really does work as quickly as possible.
It didn’t fail it hadn’t been setup properly for the demo. Every new reboot you have to put in your passcode first before touchID or faceID will work.
Can't this be fooled by the owner of the iPhone being asleep? Why cant my untrusting, insecure girlfriend just hold my phone in front of my face while I am asleep and access all of my dubious communications with my other girlfriends?
In all seriousness.... this seems like a big issue, unless FaceID only works when eyes are open. Does anyone know if open eyes are a requirement?
I just read in an article somewhere (well it’s in this thread) that having your eyes open is part of the ‘attention aware’ piece of the identification, and that it is a setting that can be turned off. So you’ll probably want to leave it enabledCan't this be fooled by the owner of the iPhone being asleep? Face ID will only unlock your device when you look in the direction of the iPhone X with your eyes open, meaning Face ID only works when there's a live person in front of it. Attention aware is optional, though, and can be turned off if you choose. Most people will want to leave attention awareness on, but for users unable to focus their attention on the iPhone, turning it off will allow the iPhone X to unlock with just a facial scan.
If they had the fingerprint reader embedded in the display (like the original plan) it would have been a better user experience. 1 step for Apple Pay with fingerprint scanner, not 2 (Authentication then power button twice) is the perfect example. JMHO...
This will get alot of people as a get through, but Apple, please don't stop getting the fingerprint scanner working through the display for next years iPhones.
It continually updates the face map so it always recognizes you.
Imagine someone seeing a picture of you with and without a beard. Big difference. But if you take a picture each day or even many times a day as that beard grows, the change is far less drastic and the difference isn't much.
There are a LOT of people crying about this feature without ever using it. People cried about Touch ID too because they had the chance to use it. I recommend trying it before you whine about it.
Only works with one face... Non-starter for the iPhones in my family. The girls will be getting 7's anyway so I guess it doesn't matter.

I assumed the dots were IR, which is why we don't see them when scanning, and the IR camera could detect eye position just like the regular camera can. I might be wrong, but why go through the trouble of adding all these sensors and not cover that scenario? I guess I'll look like an idiot if I'm wrong but Apple will look even dumber if this is the case. Surely they've thought this through and looking at the sensors, it seems quite likely.True. But can the iPhone use the IR data points to tell whether eyes are open are closed? I assumed it was using the optical image. It would be pretty impressive if the IR facial mapping was accurate enough to determine that your eyes are shut.
I wonder if and how Siri is going to interact with us watching us through the new sensors..
Touch ID is far from perfect and after 4 years still fails at times.
Most people will prefer the convenience of Face ID
The more I read about it I can only think of the advantages of Face ID compared to Touch ID. It’s a significant step forwards for convenience.
And let’s face it, this is a step up in security as well.

Can this really be true? If so, it's very disappointing for children who may share a phone and/or parents who don't mind (or even want) their kids to have access to their phone, but not their password.
