So my wife can open and use my phone without using the passcode. It's not big deal (she can use the code) but it would be nice to have.
Second that. Both my wife and I have a single fingerprint of the others programmed into our phones so that we can use them quickly and easily without having the other person unlock it first. And without having to use the passcode.

Does anyone care that this is some of the scariest Big Brother technology ever created? They can read your freakin face in the dark. Why? I'll be skipping this BS.
So what? The camera can detect that you are looking at the phone. Which you are doing because you want to unlock the phone. Do you have privacy concerns because your iPhone 7 knows how often you touched the screen?

Can't this be fooled by the owner of the iPhone being asleep? Why cant my untrusting, insecure girlfriend just hold my phone in front of my face while I am asleep and access all of my dubious communications with my other girlfriends?

In all seriousness.... this seems like a big issue, unless FaceID only works when eyes are open. Does anyone know if open eyes are a requirement?

The probability of two fingerprints being the same is one in a few dozen million. Since fingerprint sensors don't store every little detail, the final number ends up being in the tens of thousands region.

Cool to know thanks!! I was definitely curious and now it totally makes sense though not sure I'm believing the 1 in a million with face recognition though but if it works as advertised sounds like it should in theory be more secure.

Do you and your partner keep secrets from each other?
Why would you not wish both you and your partner to be able to easily access each others phones?
First of all, that's your problem, not apples. And if you really want to share, then just use the code after two failed attempts. In case you haven't figured it out, face id is very complicated, and at this point, two store two faces is probably prohibitive. Not everyone get what they want, especially if implementation isn't trivial. But go ahead and bash apple for that. It's standard fare here.

Maybe read the articles before commenting on them?

I just read in an article somewhere (well it’s in this thread) that having your eyes open is part of the ‘attention aware’ piece of the identification, and that it is a setting that can be turned off. So you’ll probably want to leave it enabled :)

Face ID will only unlock your device when you look in the direction of the iPhone X with your eyes open, meaning Face ID only works when there's a live person in front of it. Attention aware is optional, though, and can be turned off if you choose. Most people will want to leave attention awareness on, but for users unable to focus their attention on the iPhone, turning it off will allow the iPhone X to unlock with just a facial scan.

If they had the fingerprint reader embedded in the display (like the original plan) it would have been a better user experience. 1 step for Apple Pay with fingerprint scanner, not 2 (Authentication then power button twice) is the perfect example. JMHO...

This will get alot of people as a get through, but Apple, please don't stop getting the fingerprint scanner working through the display for next years iPhones.

Better idea is just put touchID on the side like Sony or on the back like the Pixel..

It continually updates the face map so it always recognizes you.

Imagine someone seeing a picture of you with and without a beard. Big difference. But if you take a picture each day or even many times a day as that beard grows, the change is far less drastic and the difference isn't much.

There are a LOT of people crying about this feature without ever using it. People cried about Touch ID too because they had the chance to use it. I recommend trying it before you whine about it.

God thank you. Yes, I can't remember how many people whined to the umpteenth degree about how Touch ID didn't make any sense because you had to set a passcode, and how it was cumbersome because you had to lay your finger on the home button for a second. I even remember the BS youtube videos comparing the speed typing in a passcode vs. Touch ID. Face ID is going to be great, truly a step in the right direction, and the future. I can't wait to see Face ID in action in person.

Only works with one face... Non-starter for the iPhones in my family. The girls will be getting 7's anyway so I guess it doesn't matter.

Can this really be true? If so, it's very disappointing for children who may share a phone and/or parents who don't mind (or even want) their kids to have access to their phone, but not their password.

Well when someone get's Touch ID working and Apple can use it in their phone, this issue will be gone, as Face ID will just be an option as it was going to be initially before it was apparent under screen touch was not ready yet.

Does kinda feel like this is a Model 1 and like watch 1 and iPad 1, the next one will be the one to get.

True. But can the iPhone use the IR data points to tell whether eyes are open are closed? I assumed it was using the optical image. It would be pretty impressive if the IR facial mapping was accurate enough to determine that your eyes are shut.
I assumed the dots were IR, which is why we don't see them when scanning, and the IR camera could detect eye position just like the regular camera can. I might be wrong, but why go through the trouble of adding all these sensors and not cover that scenario? I guess I'll look like an idiot if I'm wrong but Apple will look even dumber if this is the case. Surely they've thought this through and looking at the sensors, it seems quite likely.

"If someone knocks you unconscious or attempts to unlock your iPhone X with your face while you're sleeping, it's not going to work."

Um...if someone is that determined to steal your iphone that they are willing to knock you unconcious...whats stopping them from glueing your eye lids open?

Apple is just claiming all these being easy and better more secure because they're obviously covering up on their failure to implement in-display TouchID. Failure to recognize would probably a common considering it already failed on day 1 of the demo. There's no doubt that somebody could bypass the FaceID, the very first one would be an identical twin then later on somebody is going to find a way but it needs an extra effort to do it.

Google Pixel - lightly touch fingerprint sensor on back of phone and instantly on the home screen. "Boom".

"Face ID Growing Pains" This means Apple is charging you premium to test their new product. I used to remember when iOS beta it cost $99 for developers to test and report bugs to Apple. This is like Google charges premium on their test products hype it up, people go crazy it's the next big thing then kill the project. The only difference is that Apple is not gonna discontinue the iPhone X concept but rather continue the development until polished or by next year in-display TouchID is ready.

Touch ID is far from perfect and after 4 years still fails at times.

Most people will prefer the convenience of Face ID

The more I read about it I can only think of the advantages of Face ID compared to Touch ID. It’s a significant step forwards for convenience.

And let’s face it, this is a step up in security as well.

Really? TouchID was a VERY popular feature. I understand the desire to blindly defend all things Apple, but I bet if they managed to make TouchID work with screen that people would be complaining about it.

Allowing a spouse or significant other, or kids to share a phone is all fairly common practice. I would suspect that once Apple gets it working in the field with 100 million customers, and works out all the bugs, then they can expand it to allow multiple faces.

This isn't really a problem at the moment if true, since this phone is already reported to be in short supply, and there's sure to be significant demand even starting at $1,000. Given that, it's highly unlikely that many people are going to be facing the dilemma of needing to share it with someone else. Just a guess. So by the time the phone has caught up with demand, and FaceID tested extremely well in the field, either an update to iOS 11, or iOS 12 will permit additional faces.
