It doesn't say anything whether or not XR sales are below expectations nor whether or not iphone sales overall are below expectations.
It’s a hugely positive data point. No one has ever known iPhone unit sales expectations because that’s never been published by Apple.

I did.

The Fed's Powell also made a statement that hinted at a plateau in the rate at noon:rolleyes:.

Apple's VP Greg Joswiak made his statement at about noon:mad::rolleyes:.

The stock market took off after that.

Previous close, $174 - noon price $175, in the next four hours after this statement - sharp rise in AAPL price ~$6! It kicked up the broad stock market too, almost all the indices. About 75% of the stocks I follow did the same.

Cause and Effect? I said yes;). You say otherwise:).

Is it because of the Fed's statement or Apple's statement?
Absolutely bc of the Fed...Apple is the biggest company in the world is part of about every long index.

If you’ve paid any attention to this market, it has been DYING for Powell to be more dovish. That is WAY bigger news than this and is what drove the entire market higher, including Apple.

Apple never announced ASP— it was derived. And with them no longer announcing units sold, ASP calculations can no longer happen reliably.

Apple does announce ASPs during their Quarterly Earnings Calls. Apple CFO Luca Maestri stated during the Q3 2018 Earnings Call that iPhone ASP had risen to $724 and in the Q4 Earnings Call he noted ASPs had risen again, now to $793.

saying it is the best selling iPhone in their lineup doesn't mean much, lets say they sell 3 xr for every 2 xs and xs max. without sales numbers it means nothing. Are the total sales of the XS and XS max more than the Xr?
Again, it’s a far better statement than something generic like we are happy with our lineup. He specifically said its selling better than any iPhone since release, so its good news and quiets many people speculating iPhone 8 was outselling Xr. I can probably dig up a fake news article that mentions that.

MacRumors forum lingo for beginners:

News: “Apple rumored to order less of component x in the second half of the year” -
MRF: Definite proof that Apple is OVER! Tim Cook destroyed Apple! They are done!!!! Time for a Pixel!!!! Steve come back!!!!! DOOM!!

News: “Apple sells a ton of iPhones despite rumors”
MRF: Creative PR

Apple did not say that they sold tons of XRs. Pay attention to words. They said that XR on its first month sells better than XS (without XS+) on its second month. Then of course one would expect that the second month of XS is much worse than its first one (peak demand). So, this statement clarifies nothing but by being so intentionally coy it actually makes me think that the sales are not very good. It may also mean that XS sales totally fell through the floor but i would not go that far.

Apple announces their ASP each time.

Transcript from last quarter, Luca Maestri - Apple, Inc.

"iPhone revenue grew 29% with growth of more than 20% in every geographic segment. iPhone ASP was $793 compared to $618 a year ago, driven by strong performance of iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus, as well as the successful launch of iPhone XS and XS Max in the September quarter this year, while we launched iPhone X in the December quarter last year."

Apple CFO Luca Maestri stated during the Q3 2018 Earnings Call that iPhone ASP had risen to $724 (a 20% increase Year on Year). I imagine he has done so on prior EC's, as well.
You are right, forgot they said it in the conference call. But they will stop doing that now since you can then derive unit sales.

The Xs and Max already had 30 days to soak up the pent up demand building since November 2017. Not everyone's phone contracts end in September.

The fact that XR is attractive enough to carry the torch, especially during the competitive holiday season is a strong indication of the model's success.

If apple sells a lot of regular iPhone X, a lot of XR’ s and a good amount of IPhone XS(max), and sell fewer iPhone 7’ s and iPhone 8’ s this quarter, because they sold more high end iPhones, they could very well surprise everyone with their earnings this quarter.

But ok, “ apple is doomed” is what sells these days... so..

But that is actually the real problem. The hate for apple seems to be growing these days, and that is what apple should be worried about, and act on...

The following statement is modeled after the Apple statement and is factually 100% correct: "XR has been more popular than all iPhone models from the first one up to the 6 (inclusive) combined each and every day since it became available for purchase". Resounding success, is not it?

My point was pretty clear when you take it in to context of the quoted post. Whats yours?

Mine is pretty simple - iPhones are too expensive for most people.

Apple's iPhone XR, released in late October, has been outselling the iPhone XS and XS Max every day since it first launched, Apple's VP of product marketing Greg Joswiak told CNET in an interview published today.

I don't doubt that, but the stories haven't been that it isn't outselling the flagship phones, they've been about none of the phones selling as many as they thought they were going to. The answer is artfully marketing but the avoidance also answers another question of how well the iPhones are selling.

Wow. Sales for the XS and XS Max must be REALLY bad.

I’ve been an iPhone guy since the beginning. I’ve owned nearly every iteration.

I didn’t upgrade to the X last year and this year I went a little crazy and ordered a Pixel 3 XL.
Same here. Been with iPhone since beginning. This year is the first time I didn’t upgrade.

I am guessing Apple probably snatched up a bunch of shares today. After they got out they put this statement out as a hint that things are going basically according to plan. Of course they give as little info as possible. It isn't like Greg was going to invite you into his house to check how much change is in his sofa.

i can't believe anybody would think Greg is covering anything up. That would be a recipe for utter catastrophe if things aren't going well. For anybody claiming that Greg is lying or hiding anything, does Apple have a track record making misleading statements to cover up previous bad guidance given by Apple?

If things are actually that bad they would do better to say nothing at all. Anyway it's just my guess.

Offered to upgrade my daughters 7+ to an XR and she said no.... the single lens camera makes it look too much like an older phone she said.... and yes, looks are important to a 13 yo teen.

You are one lucky dad. You didn't explain to her how stupid this was?
