A 13inch Aluminum MacBook with an LED display and multi-touch would be the perfect college laptop if not the perfect laptop. Especially if it weights 4 pounds.

The current macbook is the perfect college laptop, which is why I see at least 30 every day on campus. I have a MBP (as do many of my peers), but I'm in Media Arts and like the extra power.

bring it on apple.. my pb is dying. i put the charger in then all of a sudden it stops charging as if i pulled the plug out (but i didn't)

It may sound funny but I think the features that I most wishing for is a back lit keyboard on the MB... That would be so useful to me (and there is no chance I'll buy a MBP only for that feature).

I really do wonder if they will indeed update the design of it. Because it's going to be really hard to sell the Pro...I guess they could do that in a black aluminum?
Apple will definitely make the Pro model even nicer. Plus the LED screen, the bigger 17' screen, probably bigger HD available, the ability to use an additional monitor (does MacBooks do that?) -- in short, even if it the MB goes to the same material, Apple is going to make those that want a MBP to want even more than before... come on... you know that!

Hey everyone
Im going off to college in Augest. I have never owned a Mac, but i am leaning towards getting one for college. Is it good for college? I want a macbook. Problem is, i keep hearing about this update. heres my situation. If they dont release a new update, are macbooks still great for college. Mostly used for interent, papers, research, Messenger etc. If they do release a new one. When would it come out? I cant wait until after i go to get it. And i am worried that if a new one came out, arent there usually bugs, so wouldnt that be a problem? If it came out early July, then i can wait for reviews and make sure there arent bugs.. Please help... also, is there any difference between White and Black macbooks?

Thanks

If they're going to update the macbooks soon, they'd be stupid to not do it at the beginning of June so that they'd have a jump on the education market.
Maybe. They also do a back to school promo with the iPods / printers which help them sell a lot.

This way they could get rid of stock.

Yes a Macbook would be great for you. I would just wait as long as you can and then get whatever is out.

Macs are great. They'll really help improve your spelling.

I acutually don't realy agree with that. Lately, i've been really unhappy about how Apple handles the distinction between MBs and MBPs. The distinction is getting smaller and smaller every year. Owner of the first MBP, i'm waiting for the new ones to come out to change, and the major difference is the graphic card, but $1k for a graphic card???
Especially if the MB will get LED screens and aluminium casings. If it does, i'm going banana ****
They should defiinitely add functions to the MBP that they will not put in their MB. Unfortunately, the MB is their best seller, they will therefore put the latest technologies in it, in order not to loose any sales.
MBP owners or wanna be owners, we're ****ed up :(

Still hoping for a 12" or 13,3" MBP, but honestly, what can it have more than the actual MB or MBA? Graphic card, but knowing Apple, if its a MBP, we all know what the price is going to be :p

/losing hope
Sigh

really? that would be good. even if it was aluminum?? i wish apple would tell us. I really hope if a new one comes out, it will be in early July.

and if there is a graphic card.. how much do you think?

Apple, instead, will release an Aluminum MacBook, and you'll get integrated graphics instead...

If you want a Graphics Card - they make you upgrade to the 15" MBP.

Enjoy...

Yep, I'm sure the 80 or so of you will be stoked.

I don't get what the fascination with blu-ray drives is. Sure, you can watch movies, but what else comes on blu-ray? PS3 games aren't going to work.
Blu-ray discs can hold over 50 GB of data. You can put whole movie archives on one disc, several operating systems, etc.

Exactly, that's what i'm afraid is gonna happen. Basically $1K is the price for the graphic card. I'm not that price sensitive, it just doesn't feel fair in a way to have nothing more than a graphic card for the price. If the 13'3 MBP comes out at $2k, i'd still buy it.
The Pro in Macbook Pro just doesn't mean anything anymore.
Anyway, let's just wait and see what Apple will treat the Macbook with and forget about the Pro

both of the laptop lines need a redesign badly. dont get me wrong, they still both look great (certainly better than anything else out there), but if apple is to continue to stay ahaed of the curve, they have to make evolutionary design changes and bring the newest technologies to BOTH lines.

Its about time for some of the current pro features (LED screen, multitouch, backlit keyboard) to filter down to the MB line, and newer technologies (ie. blu-ray, higher resolution 15" screens, magnetic latch, SSD option) to be introduced to the pro line.

Yes, higher resolution 15" like on the Lenovos. I've been dying for that :)
Doesn't the Macbook already have the magnetic latch?
I want a 8800GT, higher resolution, slimer design (but i like the actual), the new Intel procs, new keyboard but not black as the MBA and the rest i don't really care. The Hd and Ram will be changed anyway. Longer battery life but with all new additions, i don't really see that coming up. As for the drive, i havent used a CD/Dvd in such a long time that I don't really care.

I for one think the current MacBook design is great. Mine has fallen off the dinner table onto tile a few times, Hit a steel door jam as I was walking out of the office, my 2 yr old loves to walk on it while the lid is closed. I dont baby this thing a bit and it still looks and works great. There are some scratches but I feel the white helps hide them. The case has not cracked. If I had a aluminum laptop there would be dents and dings all over. The plastic handles the abuse better. I hope they keep at least one model plastic.

Well if they are 13.3", the most logical model is the MacBook since the MacBook Air already has a 13.3" LED LCD panel and the Pro's come with 15.4" and 17".

The only other option would be a 13.3" MacBook Pro to replace the old 12"...

I wish, at the same price point as the BlackBook!

With the distinguishing line between the MacBooks and MacBook Pros quickly fading away, my suggestion is that they just get rid of the MacBook Pro line and just call all of them just MacBooks. It'll be a much more simplified line-up:

13" MacBook (Multicolored): Superdrive, Integrated Graphics Chipset

15" MacBook (Silver & Black): Superdrive, SSD optional, Dedicated Graphics 512MB

17" MacBook (Silver & Black): Bluray Superdrive, Dedicated Pro Graphics Card

Probably not gonna happen

Steve is a master of psychology and of creating a sense of 'I want' in the buying public.

i think you mean iWant, and yes, it's true, iWant whatever new MB they come out with, top end, cause my toshiba sux!

The MacBook Air has been released ;).

Not even close to trying to replace the 12" Powerbook! The Air is no where near what is needed!

I'm a college student too. If you don't need anything graphics intensive, the MB is perfect. So wait as long as you can, and buy the update/current model! That's what I will be doing!

I disagree, the pro has multitouch, LED screen, Matte Option, different keyboard, backlight keyboard, FW 800, more USB ports, better graphics card, etc. While overpriced, it smokes the MB!

Since we're dreaming/speculating/whatever, here's my guess:

MacBook is recast as a 13" version of the current Pro line, Air quality LCD, multi-touch mousepad, firewire 800 (Timemachine pep), 4 lbs +/- still using integrated graphics and option up to 320gb/5400 hd

MacBook Pro's all get the bevel edge treatment of the Air, new options are blue-ray and integrated cellular modems, a very high end model with extreme graphics, 4gb ram and 3.0 ghz processor (one of a kind).
